- The Royal Opera's Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha sings 'Pace, pace mio Dio' from Verdi's La forza del destino, as part of our Battle of the Arias series.
La forza del destino is one of Verdi's most ambitious scores. Its overture - which introduces us to the sinister motif signifying Fate - is one of his most memorable. The opera also contains some of Verdi’s most brilliant choral writing, including Act III’s stirring ‘Rataplan’ chorus, and several beautiful and intimate arias such as Leonora's ardent Act IV 'Pace, pace mio Dio!'.
South African soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha joined the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme in the 2019/20 Season.
Rangwanasha started singing at an early age, and represented the Limpopo province at national level from 2009 to 2012. She completed her PGDip at the University of Cape Town, where she studied with Virginia Davids, and took a BTech in Vocal Art (Performance) at Tshwane University of Technology, where she studied with Kiewiet Pali and participated in concerts and masterclasses with Michelle Breedt, Kliesie Kelly Moog, Barbara Hill Moore and Josef Protschka.

I was entranced by Masabane when I watched her on Cardiff Singer of the World. I really wanted her to win. A true dramatic soprano - this is the right aria for her.
I'm currently studying opera myself and I know it is a very difficult aria to sing and she did it beautifully!Bravo!

You don’t really have the judgement to say it’s too soon for her to take this on unless you are her teacher or are intimately familiar with her voice, her breath, and her journey as a singer in some other way, OR she has asked you for your input. Yeah, she might be young to sing this, but does it matter? Instead of saying something negative like this (which can have a much bigger effect than intended, seeing as a singer’s instrument is her body, which can’t be separated from the mind, and any critique on the instrument is a critique on the singer as a whole) try saying something nice or nothing at all.
@@katyunruh6236 It's the singer's responsibility to deal with their emotions and feelings and either accept the criticism or reject it. If she were to get booed onstage, is the audience wrong? Pavarotti doesn't think so.

I know this was 3 years ago, but I recently saw her in a production of Turandot where she performed as Liù. Out of all the amazing performers, I found her performance as Liù to be the most poignant and powerful. I’m now going down a pipeline of all of her music. Her tone, phrasing, and musicality is simply stunning
I can’t wait to follow her career, especially post-pandemic. She is totally awesome 😎

I loved how diffident she seemed when she was introducing herself, but marveled at the confidence that took hold of her as she sang. The woman at the end of that performance? She's powerful.

The great sopranos start with amazing top notes and then over time they begin to lose them. Tebaldi and Callas case in point. If you begin with acuti as poor as this you don’t get better. She has been poorly taught. A shame, since the raw material is there.

My first thought, when seeing how young she is, was "she shouldn't be singing this aria yet." But she surprised me. She didn't push it too far (though right up to the edge.) She will have a stunning career if she doesn't allow herself to be seduced into singing roles that are too heavy for this stage in her development.

@@zayvier69 According to an article in an online magazine called IOL, she was 23 at the time the article was written in 2017. So she's 26 now.

To sing an aria is not to perform the whole role. The whole performance is too early for her, only this aria is ok

Nice to hear a soprano with good solid lower range. Struggling a bit with the high notes but hopefully this will improve with time and hard work. Well done and good luck in the future!
If she has some trouble reaching high notes, she could call German Opera master Jonas Kaufmann. I am sure he will be able advising her properly! :==)

In summer 2018, the opera tenor Jonas Kaufman gave a highly-acclaimed concert in the "Waldbühne Berlin" singing Italian arias a whole night long.
When performing Nessun Dorma, he reached the "High C" in an incredible impressive way.

Phonetic Italian (it’s pronounced Destino with slightly long i and accent on the second syllable) and, apart from a somewhat pretty voice, I hear poor legato, no appoggiatura and she is unable to sustain a pianissimo...plus the last high note sounds flat. I mean really is this what they teach at the ROH...thank God for Brexit so talented artists can go seriously study in Italy and Germany instead. Someone should also warn her that such a complicated triple-barrelled name will get her absolutely nowhere.
I agree with you for the most part, but I think it’s a beautiful voice with a lot of potential. Only time (and good coaching) will tell if she can “grow” her voice into a true Verdi soprano.

I totally agree with you. It's an age old problem that especially female singers of color face. They often have a richer timbre, which leads some to believe they are best suited for the spinto and dramatic repertoire. This is a lovely instrument, but even if Leonora is in her future, she should take great care that she arrives to the future with the artistry to portray the character and her voice intact to sing it.
This WILL be incredible in her voice, though! All the right pieces are there, y I can definitely hear those amazing sweet spots. But I definitely agree as well. I’d bet money that Mimi is gorgeous in her voice right now

Her voice is superb quality but I agree-not correct rep! Would love to hear Mimi or Micaela etc; unfortunately they give those roles to even weaker little voices leaving wonderful lyrics like this girl to sing spinto rep...gorgeous voice though.

MK touché! Povero Jan M C just doesn’t get it. It’s not an OPINION that this is the wrong aria for her. It’s a simple fact. She does have a beautiful voice for sure and should pursue a singing career.
However...she sang the first high Bb forte. The score requires it to be sung softly, but it sounds to me like there was no other choice for her. The final (forte) Bb was just plain flat. That’s a technical issue which cannot be fixed by breath support, poetic musings, and wishful thinking. Someone called it “tuning problem” but that’s a bit of an over-simplification.
If you’re not a voice teacher or voice coach you are not in a position to “correct” those of us who are. We are not being mean spirited. When you’ve been coaching for 55 years you learn what happens to voices when singers choose the wrong rep too early in their development. AND THERE IS NO GOING BACK once the strain becomes obvious. There is not one single example of any truly great singer who had a vocal collapse, re-studied, and was then able to attain anything near their former glory. Not one. I repeat, NOT ONE.
Young singers need to stop playing with fire.

A young singer with a potential Verdi soprano must develop and attain a reliable B-flat, B and C, before attempting the Requiem, Aida or Leonora. This can take time, and she is on her way.
