06 has some peak Sonic moments like the intro cutscene and another moment I really like is when Silver tells him "You're not the iblis trigger... I'll help you save the princess even though I tried killing you throughout this whole game" and Sonic just gives him a thumbs up and smirks, that's so Sonic to me.

I think everyone agrees that Black Knight/Unleashed Sonic is the best Sonic has ever been. To me and many others those games captures who Sonic is perfectly. I love when Sonic is portrayed as a “cool kid” like he’s not trynna be jokey or make dumb jokes to be cool, he can just sit there and give off cool energy. Plus he feels a lot more like a real person in Unleashed especially, I love his laid back attitude there and that game balances the chill cool kid who is friends with everyone and cares for people while also being a badass hero amazingly! Defo best Sonic for me

Black Knight is by far my favorite Sonic; it’s not even close.
It just gets it man. Sonic does good things, but he doesn’t care about being a hero and can be incredibly snarky to people that frustrate him. But, he also has a great understanding of the world and can seriously talk about deep issues like death and the inevitable passage of time
I just wish the game wasnt an auto scroller. I hate the gameplay but I respect how sonic acts. I cant say the same for unleashed he feels kinda watered down. But fs story book sonic, sa1/2 and 06 sonic are up there as the best

I feel like frontiers wouldn't be peak because we don't see much action in the cutscenes (except for the bosses)
To me, sonic is a free spirit that does whatever the hell he wants. Usually that’s going out and looking for adventure, but it also is helping out people in need, whether that means saving them from danger or helping them through their problems (Shara, Merlina, Chaos, Tails, and so on). He never changes or grows because he is as constant as the freely blowing wind.
Black Knight Sonic will always be him and peak; his dialogue is so badass and so GOOD

I think frontiers is the perfect evolution of a more adult sonic. Still jokey and sarcastic, but can still be sincere and honest. Also rogers delivery of sonics lines in frontiers are the best in his line up of games because of the writing finally taking itself seriously like in the storybook games and unleashed. I can’t wait to see how they handle sonic’s character in the next mainline game and continue the route they took for frontiers’s characterization
To add to your point, you also have 2 moments in Frontiers where Sonic is about to make a joke but stops himself, understanding the situation

I honestly love the older, wiser interpretation we got of Sonic in Frontiers having shown that Sonic has grown throughout his adventures. It makes me feel like we've grown alonside him and there's just something so amazing about that.
Also, can I just say that it's awsome Fadel named the bottom tier "Not My Sonic" because even if it's not Fadel's favourite Sonic, it still may be someone elses. Really cool way of being inclusive to everyone.

There are a lot of versions of Sonic that I really like, I'd probably put SA Sonic higher. One moment, in particular, I want to highlight is in Shadow's version of the final fight against Sonic in SA2. You can notice how serious he actually starts to get. And when you beat him, he clearly is more upset he failed his mission than actually losing. I feel like Sonic should never lose his cocky attitude, but he should be keenly aware of the stakes and the situation, which is something this game does amazingly.

Ngl if this was an Eggman tier list for personality then bro would get either mostly Himothy or Peak Eggman since most of his different interpretations of him either got his menacing side right or goofy side right or even human side right or all of the above. Not saying all, pretty sure one person might point out what game or comic or show where Eggman fumbled, but other than that, most other interpretations of Eggman usually got him right imo

I think that Sonic in Frontiers is kinda just missing his "You're turning into a big time villain, doctor" kind of line for this game that would've absolutely tipped him over to peak tier
I think part of that is that unfortunately he’s not interacting with Eggman basically at all in this game. The only ‘villain’ interactions he has are with Sage and for most of the game he’s just trying to understand what she wants so isn’t clowning on her the way he would Eggman. Maybe in the next game the writers could show us a bit more of his snark against the bad guy
If I'm grateful for something, im grateful for seeing Sonic in his real light and personality when I first encountered him. My first Sonic game was Riders 1 and I love his character there to this day. Afterwards I watched Sonic X and he truly was THE Sonic, especially with Jason Griffith's voice.

Sonic in Frontiers is the most alive Sonic for me. I feel like, you can really take Sonic as an example in this game, so for me it's an obvious top 1.

I’m gonna be honest. I watched your videos but this was so accurate that I couldn’t help but push that subscribe button. I played and watched a good amount of Sonic to know that this tier list is pretty accurate. Especially with the unleashed, sa2, Sonic x and story book. Like in Sonic Unleashed, the cutscene before the first boss, Sonic is chasing egg man. Before the battle starts you see Sonic do his stare down at eggman giving him the Goku look before sh-t gets real; like he stand’n on business that was a peak Sonic moment.

Sonic Boom TV sonic gets also a Peak sonic in my book because its roger best performance and the script of the show is just funny and he is really charming for different reasons than regular sonic

Honestly, the DS version of colors has similar personality with the rush series, which is why I prefer Colors DS's story over the Wii version.
Sonic in the Black Knight game will always be peak:
"I don't mind playing the bad guy once in a while."
This shows an interesting part of Sonic's personality in my opinion, he will fight for what he believes is right, even if other people disagree.
If I were to give a "definitive" Sonic, it has to be without a doubt Sonic Unleashed Sonic. That was the Sonic I KNEW I grew up with: the snarks, the heroism, the sense of helping others. That is Sonic and I wished they kept that going. Thankfully Frontiers is doing that, but I wished it was sooner.
Will agree with Adventure 1 Sonic not being quite peak yet. He comes off a lot more serious in that game. Also the voice for me though. Ryan Drummond didn't quite nail the "Heh... No problem!" -ness of Sonic until Adventure 2.
I will differ on Heroes Sonic. Especially in the middle of stages where Knuckles or Tails will be like "Maybe we shouldn't do this" And Sonic's all just "Nah bros, we got this!"

Personally speaking I think the Adventure games Unleashed, Black Knight are the best general depictions of Sonic's character. Frontiers showed us a more serious and mature Sonic and that's a good thing.

My favorite Sonics were definitely from Unleashed and Black Knight. His personality was perfect in those. It's a shame they went more goofy after those games.

I think the dialogue in frontiers (both between characters and when Sonic is running around talking to himself) is very good, I just wish the dialogue of Sonic talking to himself could be triggered more frequently since it feels like it takes forever to hear him say stuff

Personally for movie sonic, he's more childish, like how an actual kid would probably be. And I personally love movie sonic. It's because he IS a child, so of course he would act like one mostly, and immature. Although that doesn't really stop him from being mature and responsible sometimes when needed. I also agree with most of the stuff on your list, although some I disagree on but I digress

I like this list idea, its a very interesting look at the character. Just a question, have you played DS Sonic Colors? It was the only version of Colors i played for the longest time and when i eventually got to the console version, i was kinda surprised at how jokey he is.
I'd rank DS Colors Sonic at Himothy Sonic or Solid Sonic, he's pretty heroic and lighthearted without being too jokey and his interactions with all the characters that appear are a nice add to that.

Honestly, I'd probably put lost world in not my sonic....cause of the fucking decisions he makes and how he acts later on in that game ON TOP of the god awful slapstick.

For the most part, I would agree with your idea of peak Sonic. I still would personally put Frontiers at the top, but i can understand the lack of attitude would detract from the characterization. I kinda rationalize by thinking he's just slightly confused and out of his element a little bit. Considering that the cutscenes kinda have a more dramatic and dour mood more often than the other games, it doesn't really give him a chance to really show off the other sides of his personality because he's taking things more seriously and actually trying to be understanding so although in most cases i think it would be a missed opportunity I think it works in this case. However, it should be an exception and not the status quo.

honestly i dont really want sonic to be super shonen and anime constantly, i think those more shonen moments in his character should only come through in big moments (like the frontiers titan fights), because having him enter anime mode during only those moments could elevate those moments so much more and make them stand out even more than they already do. i dont mind the constantly shonen/anime sonic we have in alot of already existing sonic media but i think a more balanced approach is possible and would be more my thing.
honestly i feel like frontiers sonic has the perfect balance its just that when hes not in anime mode his character is a tad boring compared to other sonic games and media.
Lowkey, don't come for my throat, but I would've put Forces Sonic in, at most, Solid. It's not the greatest interpretation of him, but he still has the spunk and attitude. I wish they amped him up more since this game is a little more dire, but I still see Sonic. Not to mention, the music when playing as Sonic helps sell that idea more than the actual game.
I would describe him as having the highs of Colors Sonic, but having the lows of 2000s Sonic. He's riding on that weird median for me, where he's not so great, but not so bad.
This is coming from someone who's played this game like 12 times...

As much as I despise Secret Ring, Sonic got some pretty good character moments in it and black knight takes what secret rings did and improved it ten fold

I’m so glad I grew up with Unleashed. Definitely the best version for me (alongside Secret Rings and Black Knight), he is so cool and inspiring. Frontiers Sonic was an incredibly good surprise too, to me he looked like a more mature version of the 2000s which I loved and wish to see in future games.
As for Colors/Lost World/Forces, I just felt he got worse every time. But as you said the problem is not that he isn’t Sonic, he IS Sonic, but unbalanced. His cockiness, lack of seriousness and “coolness” (whatever it means) has been exacerbated to a point it would become a flaw, but the games don’t make anything out of it. So it’s just out of the place. A misunderstanding of the previous versions I would say.
Now regarding Boom, Movie and Prime, I think they are good versions provided that we see them as different Sonics on purpose. I first disliked Prime Sonic because he really didn’t fit my vision of Sonic which was based on Unleashed/Frontiers, but then I accepted that it was just a different take on the character, and was actually pretty good as it was. Same for Boom, especially the show, it was meant to be a different thing and it completely worked (too bad the games didn’t…)
Overall I would say it’s unfair to compare game Sonic to the other media Sonics, probably because of the purpose behind. Game Sonic is not a character that evolves or develops really (personality inconsistency aside), and would not be as interesting to follow in a movie or a series focused on the famous character development. It’s not a bad thing, he shines as a flat character after all, and that’s why he IS inspiring in the games in the first place. I’m pretty okay with Prime Sonic now. I just wish he was a bit less stupid sometimes.

Frontiers Sonic is peak because this is one of the most serious stories in the series, so not having him craking jokes that much nor being cocky works better, because it doesn't fit with the tone of the game, he just goes to the point and deals with one problem at a time.

Frontiers Sonic isn’t peak because he’s boring as hell in that game. I get the story is supposed to be serious but we had serious stories in previous games and Sonic would still act like Sonic and actually be interesting in those games and it still worked there.
You know I pretty much agree with all the stuff you said. My only disagreements would be that I think Adventure Sonic can be elevated to peak in the Japanese script with a translation mod, since a lot of his moments with the other characters, especially Amy are way better there. I'm not a big fan of Sonic X Sonic in general but I'll reserve my final judgement on him because I've only watched about half of the first season, and I've heard it gets better later.
One thing I'd like to have seen is the Classic games. I know he doesn't have much "character" in them since there's no dialog or anything but they're still foundational for his character, and I especially think Sonic in Sonic CD is peak Sonic characterization and in pretty much every psuedo-cutscene in Sonic 3 & Knuckles he's peak too, and I love how even though Knuckles consistently screws him over at the start, Sonic doesn't hold it against him and immediately works with Knuckles without hesitation after Eggman betrays him, that's peak and really speaks volumes of the integrity and moral compass of him as a character.
So yeah, great video! I'd love to see you do this with some of the other characters, at least the main ones like Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Eggman, because their characterizations vary a lot between games and media but when they shine they're really great and great in some games you wouldn't necessarily expect. :)

THE MOMENT I SAW THIS VIDEO TITLE I KNEW YOU'D GIVE BASED TAKES 👏👏👏 Adventure 2 as well as Black Knight/Unleashed has always been peak Sonic for me too! Sonic Frontiers felt like the beginning of a return to that and I really hope that we get more of that characterization for Sonic going forward.

Ha sonic x is literally the sonic u think of when u think of him he is what made me love and admire his character. He always loves his friends and fights for them with no 2nd thought. 7:10 hm i think you're being kinda forgiving with this one. While I love 06 in a way (various ways), i can't give 06 Sonic a pass, he has as much a personality as a Link. I love him aesthetically, in cgi and artwork, i like the longer quills, longer limbs, but he barely emotes and he's very bland and out of character for his interactions with Elise alone. The only scene where i get my Sonic in 06 is in the cgi where the Egg Carrier explodes at the end of his story and in the opening scene.

I don’t know if this is a hot take but Sonic Prime has my least favorite version of Sonic ever. Nothing about him really feels like Sonic. He feels like a separate character made to look like Sonic.

Just gonna say this, but you mixed up Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog with SatAM. It wasn't even there, but Adventures is the silly one while SatAM is the one that follows a darker path, sorta like the Archie Comics. Yeah, they look similar, but they're pretty different outside of looks and VAs. Just thought I'd bring that up. Pretty solid list, though I'd switch Frontiers and X Sonic, just cause there's something about X Sonic that doesn't feel right to me. Idk, I just prefer Frontiers Sonic. I'd also probably put Heroes Sonic up a bit higher, but other than that, seems like a list I can agree with.

Yeah, I feel like Frontiers has a lot of padding. No hate to Ian Flynn, but I feel like he over-corrected Sonic's character, and this could be argued for the rest of the characters. When it comes to Prime, my issue isn't even necessarily with his character portrayal, but more so that he feels too similar to Movie Sonic with the alleged background of the current canonical Sonic. (Also recontextualizes Shadow's annoyance at Sonic, like if I were in his shoes I'd want him stfu too)
