Indonesia's Economy: The Next Economic Superpower?

- If you wanted to put Indonesia’s economy in context, comparing it to its neighbours is a good place to start. Malaysia and Thailand. Countries 8 and 4 times smaller than it. Indonesia doesn’t appear to be as interconnected with the world. It has fewer top global firms, less overseas investment holdings, considerably smaller high tech exports, fewer patents and not one university ranked in the top 800 in the world.
And again, remember. This is an economy which is tipped to be a world leader in less than a decade.
So when you think about a developing economy. More often than not a familiar development pattern emerges. One based on a transition from agriculture to manufacturing, a comparative advantage in cheap labour, slowly climbing up the value chains, which finally propels it nation into developed country status.
And a lot of these factors are relevant to Indonesia's economic journey. But there is a big exception here.
Indonesia’s heavy reliance on commodities as opposed to manufacturing. The nation is awash with natural resources on both land and sea. Being historically a member of OPEC, but a net importer of oil since 2003.
Luckily for Indonesia, the 2000s were the perfect time to cash in. The world has just been through a commodity supercycle.

baru sisanya dibai buat belanja militer, buat riset, buat bangun Infrakstuktur itu sudah tidak banyak syukur-syukur dapat 100t untuk riset dll
kalau modal riset dan bangun Infrakstruktur negara cuma 100-400 trilyun jelas lah kurang perbandingan saja Proyek kereta api cepat California amerika itu sekitaran Rp 1500 trilyun
riset untuk NASA saja per tahun sekitaran RP1000an trrilyun
tanpa ber utang jangan harap kita dapat ngejar pembangunan negara-negara maju
jadi jangan heran kalau ada keluhan-keluhan Ilmuwan tidak perhatikan lah, banyak sekolah di pedalaman rusak tidak ada guru dsb alesannya bukan negara tidak mau namun Negara memang tidak mampu dan tidak punya dana untuk biayai semua apalagi tambah di tekan tidak boleh ber Utang.
Utang / debt sebenarnya tidak masalah kalau diatur Rasio utangnya (kalau negara maju malah nga kepikirin rasio lagi, pemebri Utang sudah percaya mampu bayar lihat aja Utang USA, Jepang, China
Indonesia main aman Rasio Utang batas 25% kalau jepang rasio utang sampai 400% mereka nga pikir jumlah utang aja ratusan ribu trilyun)
kemampuan membayar saat jatuh tempo
dan Utangnya di buat untuk membiayai sektor produktif yg punyai peluang pertumbuhan di kemudian hari dan bukan di korupsi atau cuma di buat untuk menutupi defisit keuangan atau untuk ditambah buat Gaji PNS
kalau negara mampu memanejemen Utang negara dengan baik

Contoh lagi paling gampang ijin buat kitcar.. indonesia pinter2 loh bikin mobil custom motor custom tapi kenapa tidak dimudahkan dalam mengurus legalitas karya mereka???

I'm Indonesian living in Germany. I truly believe that a lot of intelligence and smart people in Indonesia, we just need a great leader who can teach/change Indonesian mentality to be a better person. Some people says, "we have enough smart people but less honest people". Some day, I believe INDONESIA will become a great Country.
The president is quite good, but one of the main problems are the bureaucratic practices are so unrealistically complicated, it just sparks corruption. For example the driving license test is among the hardest in the world, even if we succeed it's not 100% guaranteed you will get the license, you need to pay approximately Rp 1.5 million to get driving license without ANY tests. Just like pay to win

You say that yet deep down you don't actually believe it. You're a part of the 'brain drain' issue. If you actually care about your country, you'd stay there and try to change it for the better instead of seeking a better opportunity overseas. I'm not blaming you though, as you have every right to have the best life you can get.
Being care about your country, doesn't mean that you need to live or stay in that country. A lot of things you could do outside of the country, small thing like wearing Indonesian's batik or just to attend in Indonesian show on the stage by playing angklung, tari (dance) etc.
I'm not an eligible person to change the situation of Indonesia since I'm not so Intelligence or having power to do that.
As a hotelier and also as a truck driver, I guess I've taken this opportunity to live overseas and that was my best decision. With those skills I have, here in Germany. I can make sure that my family especially my kids needs will be secure and these is the reality.

Nowadays in Indonesia, any business without internet is impossible to develop. Both large, medium, small and micro scale businesses. These fresh ideas come from university graduates, they come down to the community bringing new breakthroughs in various sectors.

LRT is meant for short distance. Indonesia has structured Train system already for long distance travel, if one want to go long distance, the just need to ride that. They even had it since Dutch colonialism era.
@@einzweichschein Yeah, LRT (Light Rail Transit) in Bangkok cover the whole city while LRT in Jakarta just cover within short distance only few stops and that's it !

and the last things, currently our people is polarized by political factors and our BUMN keep losing money while the structure of organization is full of collusion make the people trust to government falling down.

I'm Indonesian, the growth i've seen in the last 5 years are immense, more and more people got higher end service jobs (IT, Customer Service, Senior Manager, etc) especially with the rise of Indonesia's unicorns & startup companies, even in the last 2 years, dozens of new startups have emerged, many may not succeed but a lot of them will and create more higher end service jobs for rising middle class. The manufacturing sector has not seen the best of days but following this year's covid pandemic, the government has pushed foreign companies to invest and eventually produce their products here.
The things that i think will inhibit this growth are corruption, social & demographic issues, and environmental issue. The first problem is the most essential one, a lot of the time law & justice system are in dysfunction because of corruption.

Philippines would still have to take a long, long way. We have to *really* break away from American cultural and economic colonialism before real progress is made. What Duterte did is not enough; we have to recognize that the USA is the enemy to be destroyed. If we have that mindset that calls for the death of the United States, Filipinos can do wonders.

The main problem of Indonesia I think is luck of knowledge, so if there would come some help from Germanys Universities ? I think that could make the difference. For me in my job as businessman I helped Indonesia in the bottling, steel, aluminium industry and other fields, with German, machines, plants and technologies.
Now here in West Java and before two years in Jakarta I concentrate on renewable energies developments. Also in water and air cleaning concepts.
I think for us Germans let's say bit cold and sometimes I think bit too serious mentality.
Indonesia is a good experience, they have all a warm heart and love to laugh and joke.
I like to laugh and joke, that's why I love Indonesia.

I think Indonesia is massively underated on the global stage. It's definately up thier with Brazil, India, Russia, Turkey etc.
I've been there before, the people are incredibly polite, mild mannered and friendly. Jakarta can be a bit overwhelming as it is pretty manic!
