I could watch this all day long. Ian McDiarmid really nailed this. It's far and away the best performance of the role I've ever seen done. It's seeped into my daily life as I sometimes find myself thinking (when it's appropriate..and it often is..).."FAITH!..". That's the mark of a great performance when the playing of it is perfect you can't help but find your own way around some of the tone and cadence and verbiage in ones own life. FWIW.
I remember reading Macbeth in 8th grade (I'm 23 now) and my teacher had me and my class watch almost every single movie production of Macbeth out there after we read it. LOL We watched this one, and I recall how my friend Tara and I thought this part was so funny, especially how he broke the fourth wall and beckoned for the camera to come, we thought that was hilarious. I still do. XD Now that I'm older and I found out it was the Emperor from Star Wars doing this, I did a double take like WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? THAT'S the Emperor? ...that is so awesome! LOL I've always loved Ian McDiarmid in pretty much anything he does, and I love him even more for how flexible he can be with roles, everything from being elegant and refined like Palpatine to some hilarious guy like the Porter here. And he seems like a friendly funny guy in real life too. LOL Not to mention, is it just me or is he kinda cute here? I donno, me and my Scottish guys, I get crushes on a lot of them. LOL
AishaVonFossen I met him a few weeks ago, for the second and third time of my life. He's a charming, witty guy. He has a great sense of humor too. I'm just about to turn 40 and I've actually always found him attractive. I was super nervous to meet him again! was actually thinking of uploading the videos I took of him.
Whoa...that is so amazing!!! :D Yeah, he's always seemed that way to me, a nice, funny guy, I'd love to meet him, too. Also, so effortlessly charming, and still handsome. :) Wow, so how did you first meet him? Did he recognize you? What did you guys talk about? I'd love to see those videos! :D
AishaVonFossen He didn't remember me from the very first meeting. It had been 11 years and I'm sure he has met millions of fans since then plus I was about 160 lbs heavier. :-) We talked a little about our first meeting and the play he was in. Faith Healer. He won a Tony for that! Anyway, the little bit we were able to talk. we spoke of his Trump jokes. He had me on the floor laughing so hard. He's a really charming guy and hilarious too. His eyes, gf!! Omg. His eyes are beautiful. I hope you get the chance to meet him. I have a thing for blue eyed men but his were really blue and had a sparkle to them. When I met him the first time after his play, he had sunglasses on and had a cool hat on. But this time he just wore regular glasses. I did a solo photo op with him and one with him, Peter Mayhew and my mother. too bad, I can't post them here so you can see! As far as the videos, I want to upload them but trying to figure out a way to upload them to where I can only allow certain people to view them. I will look into it tonight or during my work lunchbreak so I can show you. :-) He'll remember me from now on because I wore a custom made shirt that said "I am the Senate." And it had our current American Senate, in suits, on the t shirt but with his face on all the bodies. He laughed so hard when he actually looked at it. He said, "I love That! That's an original!" I had him grinning from ear to ear. I had lotsa compliments on the t-shirt from other people. So! I went back and had him autograph it. His assistant happened to be sitting there with him. He saw it and burst out laughing. And said, "oh wow! I like that." We had a brief exchange after that and Shook his hand for the ummmpteenth time. I nearly melted when he smiled at me with those baby blues. lol. yeah, between my fangirl crush and tshirt, he'll remember me this time. lol.
For all those being hard on themselves on how they missed putting together how Ian McDiarmid was the same actor who was the Emperor, don't be. Acting can be summed up as getting so into a character, that your own mother doesn't recognize you. Even when she's in the front row.
My goodness, I remember watching this in highschool. I have no idea why I didn't realize this was Ian McDirmid. I would have been geeking out about how he was Palpatine haha
Omg, you get glimpses of his guttaral palpatine voice and the sardonic look. Palpatine unhinged in his younger days...when not under the watchful gaze of his master.
I will never understand why everyone cuts the porter scene from their film production. It’s good comic relief while also continuing the dark feel of the play, and MacBeth’s final soliloquy is full of callbacks to this scene - the porter is the “poor player” and a fool/idiot. All in all a very underrated scene.
This is the ONLY version of the Porter I've ever seen who can pull it off. Go and look at some of the other versions just on youtube. They're all awful. They mostly try and be "too drunk" and it always comes off as unnatural. McDiarmid's is perfect. One of my favorite pieces of acting ever.
The comic figures and "subplots" in WS always convey the theme of the play. This is obviously dark comedy, since the Porter is inviting "sinners" to hell, reflecting the corrupt nature of Macbeth's soul. Such great acting. Shakespeare's genius always blows my mind.
I’ve been saying that for the past 17 years. I’ve seen him on stage. He’s absolutely incredible on stage. I saw Ian on Broadway playing Teddy in Faith Healer with Ralph Fiennes and Cherry Jones. He’s one of the most underrated actors of our time. You have people who make hundreds of millions, like the Rock, who can’t act and basically play themselves. Meanwhile you have gifted actors like Ian McDiarmid who should be gracing our stages and screens more often.
Or this: Vader: I was studying in the archives for my own research into the Dark Side and I found this, Master. Obviously younger but that's definitely you, Master. Palpatine: Destroy that, Vader!
Beautiful and very creepy. I wonder if McD had Olivier's Archie Rice from 'The Entertainer' in mind when he (and Nunn) conceived this bleak music-hall routine.
I used this in college to guide my performance of this monologue for an audition. I ended up getting a part as one of the comic relief characters, so I guess it worked!
What I think works so well about this is the PACE. A lot of actors are tempted to slow things down in this scene, to add jokes and stage business, etc, but comedy needs PACE! Ian is so great here because he adds plenty of physical comedy but without letting the energy drop.
And we thought it was too far out of the question for Jar Jar to rise up and be a Sith Lord. Look at your Emperor now! I suppose even Senators have to start somewhere :)
Its a bit tough to find this dvd, but i watched this whole thing in high school. Its definitely fucking awesome and worth a watch. Ian McKellen was also awesome as Macbeth.
