I suggest you check out the 70's European movie 'The Day of the Jackal', about an assassin hired to kill the French president. It was remade with Bruce Willis as the assassin, but the original is really good.
In it, you have at least two instances of full frontal female nudity, and one instance of full back male nudity. And it was no big deal, even back then. Sadly, European cinema is catering more and more to US audiences these days, so that kind of stuff is almost never in movies anymore. Back then, it was just a good way to show seduction happening, even if the action happened off-screen.🤷

This was especially strange because nudity was so common at concerts/festivals in the US in the early 2000s. Remember Woodstock with hundreds of topless or full nude girls all being streamed in TV? And this was happening at every festival/open-air gig. Not to mention Mardi Gras. And then hell break out because of a woman wearing pasties. And now everything about nudity became so toxic (not only in the US but in europe as well).

I am Dutch and around 1990 I lived for 5 years in the USA and I for sure noticed the different views about nudity.
I got a postcard from my sister for my birthday portraying her children (around 6 years old, I think) in her kitchen and I proudly showed this to my american colleguas and they immediately reacted shocked. I had no idea what was going on. They pointed at a calendar with a beach picture and some women sunbathing topless. Nothing sexual, nothing weird. Just sunbathing and drinking some soda. I hadn't even noticed it. It was just a calendar with sunbathing people. My colleguas were really upset. Naked breasts on a picture in the kitchen and children around!!
I was wondering like: How do women breastfeed if children cannot be confronted with a naked breast or nipples? Do they blindfold them?

    • @TheAsphyx666
      @TheAsphyx666 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

Good point. Europeans are much more relaxed about such things. When I was little (like 2, 3, 4 years old), I would sometimes take baths with my dad, and I suppose the same is true for many people over here. There was nothing weird about it at all, it was just easier doing it that way. When I was about 10 or 12, my mom, who went to sauna every Saturday for decades, took me along and, again, it was just normal and fun to me. As a kid, you have no weird attitudes towards nakedness and no concepts of sexuality yet, and I believe it's that sort of overprotective and uptight attitude Americans have about these things around their kids that results in those kids growing up to be equally uptight people.

@@TheAsphyx666 One of the things I don't get, is that a deep cleavage is not a problem in the USA but by accident showing a nipple is a major embarassement. Male nipples are not a problem though.
The funny part is that allthough I have no problems with nudity, I don't feel comfortable with showing any cleavage. It somehow feels as sexual signaling and I don't like to do that for all to see. Nudity as in a sauna, shower, sunbathing has nothing sexual for me.

You will accept your fate after 2 minutes and just really don't care anymore. As Tank mentioned the minor things you don't know, like placing a towel down before you take a seat were the only weird things later on.
Also if you ever go to a Sauna you might get a key for your locker, be sure not to let it touch your skin. 90°C _air_ is tolerable but _iron_ not so much, it's like touching the inside of an oven.

As an US-German myself, I had a good laugh. In part because my childhood was not only in the States but in the South, I´ve now lived in Germany for roughly 20 years.
I had to get over myself as a kid and was surprised a lot by what kids my age then thought was normal. To this day I´m aware how much of my american upbringing has influenced how I think.
On the other hand I have shocked my american family more than once, either because of how open I am about a lot of things, be it simply about going out to bars with friends or going everywhere with public transport.
I´ve fallen in love with Saunas and while most are textile free, there are some that are clothed and there are some that have sectioned days. And to be honest I think some of my family would have a heart attake if they knew.
My Dad (american) remembers some of the culture and forgets sometimes that I´m used to a lot of german stuff. I also may have shocked a partner (german) when we visted my family. Too be fair I warned him and he didn´t believe me and thought I exagerated. Well let´s say he needed a few days.

Just seeing this and am reminded of my first experience at a sauna in Germany. Our tour guide showed us the local pool and left those who just wanted to swim to do their thing. He then took the more adventurous of us upstairs where there was a full blown sauna level. One large sauna, one steam sauna, indoor hot tub kind of thing, two cold plunge baths, and an outdoor salt bath. None of us were prepared for the instantly naked tour guide showing us how everything worked. Nor were we prepared for the traditional 'Aufguss', which is a ten minute session in the sauna where they pour scented oils on the coals and fan the hot air around. It was wild. But after the initial awkwardness, you get to a stage of 'whatever' and just go with the flow. I will say though, if you ever make it back (which seems likely), you should definitely hit up Therme Erding just southeast of Munich. That place is bananas. It's in a blimp hanger, divided into 3 sections - Waterpark / saunas and pools (with clothing) / saunas, pools, and massages (sans clothing). There's something to be said about being in a sauna where they're cooking fresh bread and then swimming naked up to an in pool bar to have a pint......

Hot sauna, cold water, good food and thermal baths are just a great combination, especially during the winter. And the "Aufguss" is always the best time. As soon as the humidity rises you sweat like crazy and after the shower you feel exhausted (in a good way), relaxed and so incredibly clean.
Good for you that you tried that. I've had colleagues from the US who couldn't bring themselves to try it. They don't know what they are missing.

It helped me that the culture was different to be able to just go with the flow and follow the instructions because eventhough the other poeple were looking towards our group it didn't feel judgemental but appreciative about our "effort" to enjoy a part of their culture.

Okay, it might be just me having a unique experience, but my parents would allow me and my brother to go with them in the Sauna when we were just little kids. Like literally 3/4 years old. We would sit at the lowest steps or at the floor and leave once it got too hot for us. Our parents would regularly check in with us and ask us questions about how we would feel. So we were fairly used to it and allowed to go on our own at just 10 years old. It was a great experience, getting to know your own body and it was great for me in particular, because I struggle with raspiratory infections a lot and going to the sauna, heating up the body to an artificial fever and then cooling down again is great to fight off any illness before it can really break out. It also helps with my blood circulation issues and very low blood pressure.

    2) while sitting on lower levels - you do not pour water
    3) you piss on rocks - you'll end up behind the sauna

So lucky for you that it was a sauna with age restrictions. There are a lot that also have kids in them. 😉 It's more a "kids are loud and annoying" thing - when there is age restrictions it's because of that, that the location is more relaxation focused. There are "Thermen" (Spaß) with a family focus.

I love the Lago Therme. It's great and it's not only a sauna. There are outdoor pools, indoor pools and a few salt water pools and one with artificial waves. Oh and Tank got the full shock intentionally, because there are gender based and textile saunas in Lago where they could have gone to. You have four sauna areas in Lago - A male and a female area with 4-6 saunas each, a textile (swimsuit) sauna area with two low temperature saunas and the biggest area is the mixed sauna with about 12 sauna with temperatures from 60-110C (140-230F). The mixed area has a big sauna garden with paths. Each area has it's own locker area. I prefer the mixed gender, because it has the most options of saunas to choose from and I prefer the really hot Finnish saunas that are in the garden and are are over 100C.
To explain Lago a bit. You pay and enter a locker area where you leave your street clothes and change into swimsuits or just a bathrobe if you only want to go to the sauna. Then you walk through a shower area and the pool areas and at the end there are doors that led to the different sauna areas and behind these doors is another locker area where you can leave your dry towel, bathrobe, swimsuit etc. and then you can shower and go into the sauna.
About only adults - no. Younger can go to the sauna, too. But if I remember it right a kid should be at least 4 years old because of health reasons. Younger kids can't regulate their body temperature enough to handle a sauna. If you take a younger kid with you they tell you you do it on your own risk. And another reason is that sauna is for you to relax and if the kids isn't able to be quiet for some time they ask you to leave the sauna area. Because of noise there are some thermae that forbid kids under 12years to enter at all and not only the sauna area.

I wanted to mention that some saunas do have a restaurant where you eat and drink naked (off course with a towel on the chair or just wearing the bathrobe.

I'm from Poland and I don't go to saunas very often, but basically most of your description about the situation is how I feel too. Especially nowadays, when saunas become more common, people are more open about the fact they don't like to be seen naked and stay with the towel on or see other people naked (which often means they don't use saunas that often lol.) Back in the days in Europe, it seems like people were afraid to speak more openly and actually say out loud if they felt uncomfortable, especially when saunas felt like something that was fancy and not for everyone. I guess it's mostly personal thing, not that much of a cultural difference.

So as a part time worker in Spa both Walter and Aufgussmeoster (Infusion Master) that was really enjoyable to watch and hear. For reference in a sauna it is recommended to stay in there for about twelve to fifteen minutes deomding on the temperature, but if you are practiced and well hydrated you can go quite long. So sometimes if I
go to the sauna and it is very full I go in like 15 minutes before the infusion and go out after the infusion ends for about 30 to 40 minutes in total which again is nitnrecommended for the average sauna guest but yeah gotta decide getting a place or boiling.
Also 90 degrees is not really beginner friendly would have advised to go with 70 degrees first.

These changing rooms are usually not mixed, but the kids are mixed (moms go with their girls AND boys, dads go with their boys AND girls). When I went swimming with my father as a little girl, it was totally normal for me to be with him in the men’s changing room and see naked men there - and of course they did see me naked too.
Edit: Usually kids (at least from the age of three upwards) are allowed in our saunas. Yes, in our textile free mixed saunas. I never visited a German sauna where kids were not allowed. In my favourite sauna I see a lot of kids of all ages.

There's people of all ages, and many are regulars. The hot tub is outside,so you can sit in it while it rains. Your observations are valid for many places in the US, but the liberal states on the coasts don't share that culture. It might be because they are less religious. I'm not saying the naked saunas are standard, but even at the gym that I go sometimes that has a small sauna (which is in the bathroom, which is segregated by gender), not all women are covered.

When I go with friends we always make it a day trip. Arrive around 11am and leave at closing time, for example 9pm.
Sometimes we go for a couple of hours after work.
Everyone comes there to relax and enjoy. no one is concerned with the nudity. The infusion sessions are great, and indeed sometimes hot, but you are reborn afterwards. What is also nice are the quiet spaces where people can read or take a nap. And of course the environment where you are, namely nature, makes you relax even more.
Of course, there are also people here who do not go to the public sauna at all, but prefer a private sauna or they go to the public sauna on the day where you have to wear swimwear. Most saunas have a swimsuit day😅

As for sauna, sounds like heaven.
It's probably been 40 years since I had a sauna. My dad was 100% Finn, his aunt had a sauna in the basement. As a child I stayed there almost every weekend as that was where my grandfather lived. They would light the sauna at least once a month and it was so heavenly. Throwing water on the rocks was fun. There was also a shower right there in the sauna so we could rinse off with cold water at the end if we wanted to.
Closest I get now is take a super hot / long shower and fill the bathroom with steam.
Then go stand out on the back steps in nothing but shorts and slippers in the dead of winter.
As far as naked in front of people, that doesn't bother me. We always showered in gym class starting in JR high school and most weren't hung up about it.
I miss those showers as well. The ones with so much pressure that it almost feels like it could take your skin off.

An extra like for bravery 😁👍
You went in unaware. When realizing what it is all about you then could have left, tho. But didn't.
Glad you enjoyed it in the end.😎

I lived in the Ruhrpott area from 2000 to 2009 in a city called Herne literally around the corner from the place you visited (the spa is called "Lago - Die Therme" and is located in the Gysenbergpark). I visited this place quite often and really enjoyed it every single time.
    There are two areas:
    - The textile spa area, in which you find various pools (e.g. 2 different saltwater pools with different salt concentrations (I think they were 6 and 9% salt concentration, if I remember correctly)), a wave pool, water slide, restaurant, beauty area, solariums, etc. pp.
    - The textile free area
Here you will find the saunas (both indoors and outdoors), relaxation zones (including a relaxation zone with waterbeds), massage beds, etc. pp. The large pool in the outdoor area is not a saltwater pool. There are also many loungers in the outdoor area, which you can also use.
There are a couple of spas (in German "Therme" (singular), "Thermen" (plural)) overall in Germany. The world's largest spa is located in Erding in Bavaria (28 different waterslides, 24 saunas, etc. pp). Unfortunately I haven't been there myself, but I've heard a lot of good things about it.

What’s weird is showering with swimsuits, not being naked in the Sauna! The gym I used to frequent had their own spa with different saunas, small cold water pool etc, ( the Netherlands) and for the ladies they actually had a ladies day! All that was required was the use of a towel to sit on and a bathing robe for the rest moments.

OMG i saw the thumbnail and had no idea why i'm subscribed, then i realized it's tank without long beard.
on the topic, i'm German, we have a sauna in our basement and i used it since i was like 12, recently i went to Japan and Iceland and on both trips i got naked with strangers, in Japan the Onsen and Iceland the hot springs.
i swear i don't choose my holidays for that...

I live part time in Kyrgyzstan and going to the Banya/Sauna is like where all the dudes go to chill. You basically drink a shitload of vodka and go to the sauna. There are also many times women called to keep you company in the Russian tradition. The Banya is fucking awesome. I had the flu and went to the banya, drank some vodka, sat in the banya, and felt amazing.
