I am fortunate in that we have our own broadleaf woodland, at the edge of which we have a Shepherds Hut used for Airbnb. At nearly 80 I can no longer pack my tent and gear and head off somewhere remote, a pastime I used to enjoy a great deal. Last week I took some fresh food, a homemade loaf of bread, with eggs from our chickens to the hut which has water, power, WiFi, it’s own water treatment plant and a wood stove. The wind was already blowing hard as I lit the fire which quickly warmed the hut. I opened the top part of the stable door and secured it, allowing the wind to swirl and raw round the opening as I sat drinking a mug of Hot Belgium chocolate, listening to Vagna on the Boss system. Glam[ing rather than camping but it was exhilarating as the wind strengthened and the rain was near horizontal, made visible by the outside lanterns. The roar from the trees, some of had not lost all their leaf was deafening, as was the rain on the roof and side window. There’s a Ninga BBQ in the covered area of the decking but the wind was just to strong to venture out, so I cooked some bacon and eggs with Mushrooms and fried tomatoes and toasted two thick slices of bread with thick butter melting upon it, food my wife would never let me have but she wasn’t there, was she. I watched a good film on Netflix and after climbing into the cosy double bed, with the top half of the door still open I laid for ages just listening to the wind and rain until I eventually drifted off the. the winds occasional grouching of the hut. Spoiled I know but I had the best nights sleep for years. We have two Shepherds Huts, the other overlooks a small lake which it’s decking overhang, however we had guests staying in that hut. Both huts are secluded and very private. I now envy our guests of windy days and nights. If I have the opportunity again in truly atrocious conditions, I will make a video and get my son to post it from deep in the country side of Kent. No rubbing two sticks together for me.
another idea if you have a waterproof tent you are confident wont leak is to put the tent half in and half outside the tarp. That way you will create a much bigger sheltered area outside the tent door to sit outside and make a cup of tea. If car is nearby you can also get some great camping tables to set up next to your chair. Maybe something to consider for a future video. Also, if you look at the outdoor gear review channel he has a great light on an extendable pole. It gives off great light for night time filming. You can extend it to any height you want to.
Great little set up... I went camping last weekend just a tarp a bivvy and a couple of ponchos and warm clothes. Was the best night's sleep I had in ages. Sat on a hillside enjoying the views of the coast with woodland behind for even more shelter where I had my camp set up. Great vid fella 😊
@@ajg5585- if you ain’t got anything positive to say just wind your neck in. Nature ruined a perfectly good arsehole when it put a tongue in your mouth, and I bet your no member of MENSA.
Regarding your hot water bottle, when I did the coast to coast I put it inside my trail socks, it air’s them out and you don’t burn yourself also you have your drinking water for the next day. 👍.
During this storm sat/sun I couldnt help but think of those trying to shelter in their make shift shelters. Watching you looks cosy, wrap hot water bottle inside a sock maybe
I've done the same tip with the metal bottle (a sig one) I put it in a couple of socks! You don't get burnt and if you start to feel cold you can always put the warm socks on while the bottle is still warm enough to feel nice! Great video as always. Chris
Hi Dan great video, I think that the tarp has its place and keeps you dry to do some things and like you did when your done take it down Love the sound of rain on a tarp or tent makes for a great nights sleep for me Sounds like the tent is perfect for bad weather
I've been using that hot-water bottle trick for years. I normally sleeve the bottle into a pair of thick hiking socks so that I don't burn myself on it, and the heat lasts most of the night. It usually stays hot enough to make a warm drink if you need one during the night.
Great video mate. Tarps are a winner. You asked, so I'll answer. Yes. A bit more light around cooking would be good, but also important to get the ambience of sitting in the dark under lights. Great video. If in doubt, always throw everything in the pot and bring curry powder with you. If it tastes like #@it, the curry powder will sort it out 👍
I'm in Wales, and the storm has knocked out the mobile phone signal that has a lot of power. Even the freeview is down trees are down in a lot of areas, and I'm glad it's over.
I' a new subscriber, Dan. I must say that you were kinda crazy to be out camping in that weather, especially with it being storm Darragh around. But glad to see that you made it through that night.
I would not dream of camping without a tarp. Tent is dry while hearing the sounds of the rain. A one inch trench around the tent helps keep any running water away from the floor of the tent. Nothing worse then waking up to a floor full of water and all your gear wet or damp. To each their own!!
you can do that trick with a Nalgene bottle because they're dishwasher safe, then like the other person said put it in an old pair of wool socks, then in the morning you've got a bottle full of clean water for your 1st brew
Great video I have seen other campers use a tent and a tarp but they didn’t cover all their tent with the tarp they used it like an awning for cooking at sitting out …so the rain would hit your tent in this setup might just be right for you
Good idea using tarp Dan, you can pack tent away and stay dry while you do it. Always worth having bungee ropes on the tarp if its going to be windy, gives the tarp a bit more room for movement and less chance of ripping 👍
Hello my bro great stuff n always gud to try sumthing new esp it did rain ...❤❤❤I suggest if the area u at permits you can always put up like a 3 X 4 tarp just alongside ur camp tent so in that way you covered whilst cooking under tarp ..guess if weather is cold and no rain then just a tent is fine...I watch like from outdoor gear rearview n Abel n Victoria camping utubers quiet often as well.. gud luck my bro but all in all you humble and very conscious n concerned abt pleasing ur viewers...We luv ur stuff honest cos wat we see is exactly wat we get from you...❤❤❤
I prefer a tarp. In bad weather, I can still be outdoors and not tucked inside a tent for 8 hours. I might as well stay home and open the bedroom window if I'm doing that 🤣 And it's nice to pack up dry gear while I'm dry myself...at least until I walk out.. Now if you enjoy the rain on the tent, just tarp over the door. Make yourself an awning to sit under.
I think it's a good idea to have a tarp over the tent . We had hail come down about 2 summers ago the size of baseballs. We had two of those garage in a box things to cover up things. But the hail was so big and came down like they were shot out of a canon. The hail went right through those things. I couldn't get outside to cover car wind shields because those hail balls were deadly. A person would have been killed by them. So I think it's a real good idea having that extra layer of protection.
Hello Dan , Nice to see you out with Scott again , 😊, I like the tarp with a tent combo , its a good mix , allows so many ways to keep the weather out .
Great set up & a good hearty meal! It is quite funny though, with your " bucket of food" lol, like desperate Dan from the old comics! The tarp up provides you with a patio area, looks like a win win as far as I can see! Of course if your camping on open moor you couldn't put a tarp up, but not too when you can is stupid.
It usually warms up before a storm nothing strange there as for storms you'll need a bit more than your tent and a tarp you d be better putting it under and over your tent so rain can't get to you
@@DavidWoods-of2ct wow first I heard that, I'll definitely give it a go. Tarp over AND under. I have one tent that the rainfly let rain get in sideways when the wind blew.
