For me there is a line of the very best conductors beginning with Arthur Nikisch to Wilhelm Furtwängler to Leonard Bernstein to Carlos Kleiber ending with Mariss Jansons! (Well many might disagree with my selection but that's simply my line!) Today I cannot say who shines out of all conductors.
Thanks for this great insights of the BRSO and Mariss Jansons!

Stimmt. Menschlich und nicht arrogant. Karajan zählt nicht dazu. Aber dieser verstorbene Könner ja. Er fehlt. Ähnlich grossartig ist Saraste. Auch er, immer Mensch, immer bescheiden....

Very touching... I went to one of the concerts of his last tour with the orchestra, sadly it was one of the concerts he wasn't able to conduct due to his health - he was missed, and he will be missed.

There was a special kind of love between Mariss Jansons and the members of the BRSO. Even the word "love" doesn't quite capture the feeling -- the blend of pride and care and respect and joy and concern that bound this unique conductor with this unique orchestra. In this video, as in the other tributes to Jansons that the BRSO has published, one need not even understand German to catch the meaning. A look at the expressions on the faces of the musicians tells the story: "This was our beloved colleague and conductor. When you can understand the feelings that passed between him and us, then you will begin to understand how it was that we made music together."

What is the last piece Jansons conducts in this film (seen through the eye of the door)? I’ve recorded exactly this bit we’re listening 43 years ago by chance, only this bit and was fascinated by it, but never heard it again ever since and have long searched for it. I suspected it was Schostakovic by its handwriting, but I knew too little about his works and though I scanned his symphonies, I didn’t find it. So please, thank you, experts, to enlighten me: what piece is this gorgeous waltz?
