What a ride to watch you react to this. My mum is Norwegian and my dad was Belgian. When KARPE released this album it really spoke to me too, even though both my parents are from western countries. Belgium and Norway are quite similar in many ways, but I’d say they are also equally different. Sadly my dad died when I was only 4 so there’s always been something missing, of course him, but also a feeling of connection to my own identity. I’ve never lived in Belgium but I’ve never felt Norwegian enough in Norway, and naturally I never feel Belgian enough when I’m in Belgium. Now that I’m older I’ve realised I need to nurture my connection to both instead of neither and so I am working to become more proficient in both French and Flemish (because my family speaks both). I have also sent an extensive application to the embassy in Oslo who then sent it to Belgium to get my Belgian citizenship reinstated (because I lost it due to bad Norwegian bureaucracy). I want to belong and I want to feel closer to my dad. Wish me luck!
Thank you for joining me on this journey and sharing that. I 100% feel that of not really feeling that sense of belonging in either country. Definitely something i also have struggled with. Hope everything works out with your Belgian citizenship! Veel succes! Bonne chance!
They are playing in Brussels in a couple of weeks (May 5th at Le Botanique). My understanding is that they are bringing the entire show: musicians, dancers stage actors etc. (minus probably some of the specially designed stuff (pyro/cage etc) for their 10 concerts in Oslo Spektrum where this is shot. It is worth 30 Euro I would claim.
You know, I grew up listening to these guys and they have always been popular, but tthey really evolved. 20 years ago, they had fun and playful radio hip hop hits about the beach, girls, then more political and growing up and stuff... They got really big with more political and clever stuff. It is in the state they are now though, that they have become absolutely huge artists on another level, embracing their immigrant roots, going hard with the accents and musical references. They were always good, always evolving, but what they are doing now is really strong stuff.
Salmalaks refers to a new way to slaughter farmed salmon where you chill the fish before killing it. (With a higher price tag) i translated a norwegian article about Karopes food-referances: Karpe's latest release, Omar Sheriff, has sparked debate about Norwegian identity by playing on shared cultural references, but also by creating new ones through music. They are praised for integrating the diaspora identity even more seamlessly into their musical expression. The discussions that have arisen in the wake of the EP Omar Sheriff exemplify how precisely the pop duo hits the mark with lyrics and tone. From Yohan Shanmugaratnam's thought-provoking commentary to a major debate on Norwegian identity with contributions from Ahmed Fawad Ashraf in Avisa Oslo, Maja Sojtaric in Nordlys in Tromsø, and broadcast to millions of Norwegian homes on Debatten on NRK. Since the start of their career, the duo has poked fun at and discussed Norwegian identity-and the minority perspective as part of it. At their most brilliant, Chirag and Magdi have managed to speak directly to a broad segment of the Norwegian people, across gender and background, by drawing on shared cultural references and experiences, but also by creating new, shared references. Salmon in a New Light The Omar Sheriff track Salmalaks is a good example of a reference that gains greater meaning through Karpe's treatment of it. Perhaps especially because it’s a word that’s repeated a lot, but also because it’s reintroduced as a term with which people already have their own associations. Here, Salmalaks is given a new framing through melody and intonation. The salmon becomes "desi salmon": "Placing my heart in cold water / Salmalaks / Placing my heart in ice-cold water / Salmalaks." The metaphorical twist nods to their conscious way of using food as an image for something beyond just being cold. Like previous food metaphors-such as "You’ve got beef in your belly, I’ve got chickpeas and naan bread," used to signify the non-white Norwegian experience as opposed to the white Norwegian one in the song Vestkantsvartinga-it doesn’t seem coincidental that Karpe specifically talks about salmalaks here. It’s not just ordinary farmed salmon they’re talking about, but rather this "national treasure," which costs twice as much as regular salmon, comes in fancy packaging-and harms the environment. It’s also not the first time Chirag has used fish and where it’s purchased as a marker of class. In Sas Plus/Sas Pussy, he raps that "now my class betrayal is evident at the fish counter." Not at Lidl, no: "I'm at Meny / I'm at Jacobs / Fuck Kiwi." The term salmalaks carries both double and triple meanings. Chirag sings about his heart in the same way as a salmalaks just before it’s slaughtered-and thus has to be placed in cold water at two degrees to stay as fresh as possible. source: www.tbatba.no/karpe-anmeldelse-omar-sheriff/
We have bessewisser and I belive it gomes from germany but its so incorporated in the language that everybody knows the word, we also have bedreviter same as dutch, its a direct translate of bessewisser

"Besser-Wisser" is of course German, but has been "adopted" into the Norwegian language completely. After working close with Germans and German firms, I must say this stereotype is somewhat German and true ... 🤣. If I would translate this to Norwegian it would be "bedre-viter". Omar Shariff was one hell of an actor. DR ZHIVAGO

For Norwegians, duce sounds like a miks between English and Norwegian
