In this video I react to Tigran Hamasyan for the very first time.
Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, a classic prog-rock guitar teacher on TH-cam. I grew up on 70s progressive music but abandoned the genre by the 90s because it was too 'hard-edged' for me. My all-originals prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i went into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar).
2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery of 30 years of great music which I'd paid no attention to- until now!
I also will react to 70s and 80s prog that i overlooked, like gentle giant, camel, etc.

I just listened to "What the Waves Brought" which played after this video. This dude is so insanely talented!

      That song is amazing

Glad you liked it. What's amazing is that he not only does these super dense pieces, he also has done some very emotional music as well. This one comes off an album called Mockroot for example and not only is the album full of misleading time signatures and wonky jazz chords, it's also very emotionally expressive as well, which is a very difficult balance to strike.
I'll have to listen to Relayer again, it's been a while since I heard it.

I've adored Tigran Hamasyan for, around, 10 years and every now and then I have a look on TH-cam to see how people react to his music. I don't believe I've come across anyone who isn't exceptionally impressed by his work.

    What a pleasure.
Tigran is following me in my spotify for years, and it's always a pure pleasure. I consider him as low-key Metal muscian that decided to play piano in a jazz band.
It's nice to see he get some more exposure.

The main piano riff alternates between 15/16 and 17/16 which you could interpret as being two bars of 4/4!

Yep, at one point in the song they also play the 4/4 over it for a couple bars. At 3:30

Lol I noticed I was moving my head to the beats the same way you were throughout the video

Lol, I was always one to move along with music while others sit stiff as a board

Wow, very cool. I definitely hear the metal influence in the off beat pattern. Almost like something you'd hear with Animals as Leaders. Djent/metal. Very unique and enjoyable.

Him and Tosin have actually collabed on a song. Tosin cites him as an influence.

Nice! Lately, Tigran is what I put on when there's a longish drive ahead of me. I was lucky enough to find Tigran last year. He's outstanding. Apparently he's a fan of Meshuggah. I'm glad you're enjoying his work and I look forward to seeing you enjoy some more! I'd love to hear your take on his album The Call Within. 😁

Nice. This was cool. Reminds me of The Bad Plus.
Perhaps I’ll suggest a song of theirs soon.

You should do GoGo Penguin. Atomised, Open, Kora or Raven would be great starts

Hello Dean, why don't you react to Ibrahim Maalouf's piece Alf Leila wa Leila? It is full of complex rhythms and harmonies.

Lots of counting going on here ;-)
Keith Jarrett in a math-/prog-rock band. Very nice!
I think they switch between 7/8 and 6/8 (or is it 13/8ths then?) But I could be completely wrong.

There a few videos on TH-cam on Tigran's time signature, this one seems to alternate 15/16 and 17/16

Once you trick you brain into hearing it right, you can hear it in 4/4 (the groupings of 557555 add up to 32). It sounds soo much better that way

      It’s 4/4 dude lol
