A great introduction to lunar photography John and a pretty decent end result I’d say! Interestingly, I had my 4yr old grandson peering through my Dobsonian telescope at the moon yesterday evening. He was mesmerised, probably as much as I was when I first saw the craters on the lunar surface. As always, a very interesting video. Hope the garden’s approaching completion!
Thanks Ian, I was pleased with tge final result. I will have a go through my Redcat soon, and see how that compares. I bet your grandson was amazed at what he could see. I thought my first view of the moon through a scope was amazing. The garden is nearly done, so hoping to get my scope out soon, cloud permitting.
@ianmacdonald2307 same here, its been a disaster. I am hoping to get out tomorrow for a bit, even though the moon is nearly full. Beggars can't be choosers 😭
Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts to beginners. If the costs of a heavy duty tripod exceeds your budget, I would recommend using a tarp as a windbreak. With 2 poles, a couple of stakes, and 6 feet of cordage, you can create a wind-free space to use a less-stable tripod.
I was actually quite surprised at how good the final shot was, considering no special gear was used. The far side of the moon, on the other hand, will sadly require me to borrow a rocket from Nasa 🤣. I will drop them an email and let you know how I get on 👍
The Moon is an quite a target for observation and photography; so you are right about people using their mobile phones and ending up with less than optimal pictures. It was interesting to hear that the moon is the opposite to nebulae when it comes to settings; I have never reflected on that before and I learned something! I am currently living in a place where I can do observations from my garden and I am thinking about starting with Astronomy at home after summer; so the moon will be my first target I think! By the way; there was no text with your movie. Is it intentional? All the best, Ant
The moon is a great target Ant, especially since you can get nice pictures without special gear. Also, you can still take pictures when it's not fully dark - which you will be in short supply of soon I think. As regards text on the video, I haven't changed any settings, so I'll try and find out what happened.

@@thecampingastronomer8554 I’ve never known a winter/spring like it. I’ve only used my gear about 4 times since last October 😩

That's a very good idea, thanks for suggesting it. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment, your support means a lot to me.
I’d be really pleased with those results Jon 👍.
Can’t wait to see your shots of the back of the Moon 🤗🤭😉
