Stuart Jay Raj was asked to discuss whether the ability to learn languages is a 'gift' that some people have and others don't, or whether it's something that everyone has the capacity to do.
Questions covered include -
Given that we are entering into the AEC - ASEAN Economic Community, What languages should we be learning?
Why is it that Thai kids are always ranked last or near last when it comes to learning languages and motivation towards learning?
What can we do to improve how we learn language?
Stuart demonstrates knowledge in Chinese, Indonesian, Malay, Jawi, Thai, Lao, Danish, Hindi, Sanskrit and other languages and shows how this foundation can help leverage the learning of other languages.

"Language is the key to people's hearts. Just think of how many people speak Chinese. If I can't speak Chinese than means there is an enormous part of the planet that I am shut away from. But in speaking the language those people can now have an influence on my life" I love it Stu. Thanks for the inspiration.
It's what has always been running in my head since i can remember... and proved itself true. None of the things I would now look back on would have been possible if it wasn't for the language opening me up to those people who facilitated the experiences. Even if they speak English, it's not the same. You function on a different plane when you work freely in other people's native tongues.

Many people think I'm a chinese and they always speak chinese to me. So each day I find that I need to learn chinese at least to tell 'I don't know chinese'.

I’ve been learning Thai for about 6 months. My enthusiasm was starting to wane but after seeing this I’m inspired to keep going. 😊
Every month I would come back to this video just to re-motivate myself to learn languages. Stuart Jay Raj is still my favorite polyglot due to his near native pronunciation, his colloquial speech usage and his philosophy on language learning. The polyglot community is indeed growing everyday due to the gurus of language learning to inspire us all.

when I first moved from Hong Kong to Thailand I used to get mixed up a bit. Before my Thai became stronger and I began to lose my Cantonese a bit.. I left Thailand 12 years ago and, back here in UK, can honestly say that I'm understanding about 95% of what you two are talking about. I use my Thai language pretty much every day (online) - Great the way you are explaining some thngs about the parallels in tone/words between Mandarin and Thai. And their roots in Sanskrit. There's a lot of Hokkien spoken in Singapore. Just learned a new word. ราก - root. Latin = RADIX. Horse is another interesting word ม้า 马 うま MAre in English, 말 ma ma ma ma ma !

Thanks for the subs. It's the same stuff you've been saying for years, but hopefully by now some people might start to tune into your message, rather than just focus on the "polyglot fluent in X languages" novelty factor.
Thanks Bob. I know. I just wished after all these years that the side-show tricks could be skipped by now and we could start talking about even more really meaty subjects. What we discussed is just a fraction of what we could have. I went to a school in Chaiyaphum the other week which was a charity school set up by Tim Beaumont. It's an International level school - beautiful grounds / building / equipment and uses Harrow's syllabus. The conditions are - no school fees BUT places are only available by lucky draw. No 'connections' or lobbying, and it's open to every level of society. Free speech and questioning teachers is encouraged. It's a place of education - culture and traditions can be reserved for outside of school. Very exciting project and has many implications for learning potential not being hindered by old archaic systems.
I was in Bangkok when this aired, but missed it on TV unfortunately... not that I would've been able to understand it anyway, haha. Been a fan of your videos for a few years now, thanks for uploading this with subtitles!

I love to learn language too!! Now I'm learning Japanese as third language and Vietnamese as forth language. For me to learn language well, I have to learn about people culture as well. That was the most enjoyable part!!!

DownFlex there is truth in that, and knowing that is part of knowing how little things, please little minds, and how even world leaders, in truth, also have human (little) minds. If speaking to someone in their own language is enough to win their hearts, then political influence is child's play. If you can speak English you can speak to 98 countries and many others are learning English. Someone earlier said not learning Chines means he is ostracised from 1/3 of the world, what rubbish, the Chinese are learning English. Many Chinese can speak English..

Do they really not have words for "Deutsch" and "español" in Thai, and they just use the English names?
Thai language contains a lot of imported words that are 'thai-sounding' versions of the usual names, such as 'com-pu-tah' for computer, etc.

There's a dutch guy and American guy on youtube. Those two guys are on a whole other different level than you are right now in a sense. Those two can at least speak 20 languages +. You oughta try and compete with them at least ya know?

@@Dannyskratch Our polyglot community is a very small world. We all know each other in one way or another. Laoshu - Moses is one of the old school youtube Polgyglots.

Thats a bit unfair. Laoshu was good but his language goals were clearly different than SJR who goes very deep. Laoshu had a basic proficiency in many languages but SJR is very deep into a slightly smaller pool of languages.

what/how many dialects exactly can you speak? Actually, I always and really appreciate a person like you and all those guys out there who learn and can master many languages but have not really seen you speaking all those sub-languages . You speak Thai no doubt and do you also speak Thai dialects and does that count in your language repertoire?
