"they look Pacific Islander...Hawaiian maybe" The reason why you think that is because when you see Hawaiians, they are likely Filipinos. Real native Hawaiians are diminishing in number. When USA took Hawaii, they brought migrant workers to help replace the population. Filipinos are one of them, they were brought in by USA to harvest sugar cane starting in 1927. The Filipinos were not welcomed at first, like all of the foreigners descending on their island. Where the US used force (like killing thousands and taking their queen) the Filipinos used their smile, and they tried integrating with Hawaiians. But it took decades of convincing them, Hawaiians had disparaging names for Filipinos and white people. Till today they call white people Haole. I don't think they call Filipinos bad names today because Hawaii now is super mixed. In fact, to qualify as Indigenous Hawaiian you only need show 48% Hawaiian DNA, thats how mixed they are, because they know there aren't any full Hawaiians anymore. Most are indeed Filipino mixed with Portuguese (white) and a drop of Hawaiian. And many many are 100% Filipino calling themselves Hawaiian, whether they are born there or not. True fact. So when you picture Hawaiian, you are probably picturing Filipino-American.
Dark History- Filipinos are not hispanic if we only talk about genetics. Spaniards (mostly) avoided to have children with filipinos because they believe that they our superior class and even kept their culture and languages away from them out of fear that they will understand them and overthrow them. They even used the detegatory term “Indio” to refer to Filipinos. They mainly got their Spanish names because that’s they were baptized to Christinaty in order to fully convert them and control the country. Since Philippines are so far from Spain, the generals and the friars are the one who ruled the country and done a lot of horrible things without the knowledge of the Spanish crown. Filipinos have suffered alot under their rule and that leads to the revolution in 1896.
@@pranavtiwari6772 what culture is hispanic? What I observe is the culture of Spain and Latin America are highly very different to each other. Even Argentina and Chile itselves (also hispanic) are culturally different from peru, ecuador, colombia and the rest of central america. Argentina and Chile are more culturally closely related to northern Europe, Russia, Canada, northern U.S. and New Zealand than the rest of Latin Americans.
The term Hispanic (Spanish: hispano) refers to people, cultures, or countries related to Spain, the Spanish language, or Hispanidad. There was also Spanish influence in the former Spanish East Indies, including the Philippines, Marianas, and other nations. However, Spanish is not a predominant language in these regions and, as a result, their inhabitants are not usually considered Hispanic.
Filipinos prefer themselves called Asians, Filipino-Americans prefer themselves called Pacific Islander. I've lived in the US for over 27 years and most of my friends like to be called Pacific Islanders. We are surrounded by Asian race, therefore we are Asian.
Your name has nothing to do with if you are mixed with Spanish or not. Philippine people were forced to change their last names to Spanish ones. (Very typical of being colonized)If you didn’t you got hit with a lot of disadvantages like you weren’t allowed to own land, you paid higher taxes etc. This practice was going on even in the 70s long after Spain left. In actuality only about 6% of Filipinos have a significant amount of Spanish in them and by significant I mean 30%. Whereas compared to Latin America where their blood is about 75%. ( not that many Spaniards actually migrated to the Philippines) Acknowledge your ancestors if you have that blood but don’t let someone call you Hispanic just because you are Filipino.
@@MrLance0113hmm..actually its a Filipino-Chinese surname. It’s no secret that the Philippines is multicultural. In fact there are quite a few Tagalog words that have a Chinese origin. I see a lot of abused terms on the comment. Filipinos are not Hispanic... Hispanic people are from Hispaniola "La Española" (little Spain). Which country is it today? ABC - aruba, bonaire and the carribean. Dominica and Maybe Haiti. When the spanish crown ceded Hispaniola (1700's), they transferred some of the people to South America. Hence they where called Hispanic (not to be mistaken as latinos of south america).
I’m a Pacific Islander, and please, Filipinos are asian💖 dont get them confused with Pacific Islanders please and thx. When I see a Filipino person, I can tell that they are asian or have asian features.
Are you a micronesian, melanesian or polynesian? I'm a Micronesian. Micronesians, especially Chamorros are more similar to Asians (especially southeast asians) than the rest of Pacific islanders. We, as the pacific islanders, it's very ridiculous to classify filipinos as pacific islander. Being hispanic is just a linguistic background. You are hispanic, if the native language of your countrymen is Spanish, not any pacific languages.
@@adrianwakeisland4710 I thought it was only the Chamorro people that are more related to the Filipinos. Chamorro ancestors are directly from Filipinos. It was the Chamorro people that ventured in the Pacific separate from the rest of us Micronesians. All of us other Micronesians mixed with the Melanesians. It’s why Micronesian languages (excluding Chamorro) are very different from other Austronesian languages. I found similarities with my language (Chuukese) and some of the languages in Northern Vanuatu. And I seen Chamorro isn’t considered an Oceanic language.
Filipinos are Austronesians. They are Malays. Same as Malaysians or Indonesians. They are Asians. Philippines is an ASEAN nation. Pacific islander is Polynesian, and must be an island completely surrounded by pacific ocean. Only eastern side of Philippines faces the ocean. Polynesian languages are another family of languages. Filipino languages are classified as austronesian
That’s true! I just wanna make a small correction. Pacific Islander is Melanesian, Micronesian, and Polynesian. Oh and Micronesian and Polynesians are considered Austronesians as well BUT all of us Pacific Islanders are classified under the Oceanic languages, and Filipinos are not in that category nor are they in Melanesia, Micronesia, or Polynesia.

It's also believed that the natives in Latin American areas originated from Pacific Islanders. I forgot if it's potato or sweet potato that was not a natural crop in Latin American but is natural in the Pacific Islands. TBH, only Asian-Americans have this dilemna😁
I’m not sure about that. The many Native American languages aren’t related to any of the Polynesian languages. Same case with the dna. They have different origins. Some of them mixed, but that was only a small percentage of Native Americans and Polynesians. The Polynesians did trade with a few native Americans in South America. The sweet potato was from the Americas and the Polynesians brought the chickens.
They don't know for sure were polynesians came from there just theorizing cuz our language has a few similar words they don't really understand the polynesian race
@@dalastkanakamaoli9058 Papuan aka Melanesian admixture is absent among Filipino and other Austronesian in South East Asia like Western Indonesia (Indonesia literally have half of New Guinea Island inside its Eastern territory, and I can't deny that Melanesian in West Papua have separatist movement and get support from Vanuatu) and Malaysia. So, in conclusion both Maritime South East Asian (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Brunei, Singaporean Malay and East Timor only) and Oceanian (Polynesian, Micronesian, Melanesian) are both Austronesians but diverged because Eastern Austronesians in Oceania intermarried with Papuans while Western Austronesians in Maritime SEA intermarried with people of Continental South East Asia (Burmese, Thai, Lao, Cambodian, Khmer), India, Middle Easterners and Chinese. Culturally Oceanians are isolated while Maritime SEA have contact with all big civilizations in Continental Asia (India, China, and Islamic Caliph).
The reason Polynesians are different from Filipinos is because the Polynesians mixed with the Melanesians. All Pacific Islanders, Micronesians and Polynesians (except Chamorro), have Melanesian dna. It’s what makes us unique from the South East Asians.
@Jinh Maralit I agree filipinos are hispanics if spanish is the official native and primary language of all filipinos, not english and philippine languages (especially tagalog)! Me as a foreigner, it's very insulting to classify anybody who cannot understand and speak spanish as hispanic.
Mexico never became a province of Spain. Philipines did become an official autonomous province of Spain in 1821 until the US did propagate and funded and backed Tagalog rebels as the rebels thought they could become an ally of the US not until they were backstabbed right after the declaration of Independence.
I don't even know why being all 3 is such an issue. when they do not have to be mutually exclusive. The Philippines is a multi-cultural, multi-racial southeast asian country in the pacific. Hello I,m Chinese-Filipino, i want to explain! Most of the 110 million people of the Philippines are Austronesians. The most ancient homeland of the 500 million Austronesians worldwide is modern day Taiwan and Jiangsu and Fujian provinces of Southern China. So yes, the Filipinos and other Southeast Asians are indeed South Chinese, just there is a group of South Chinese that dispersed entirely in ancient times (Austronesians and their relatives Tai-Kadai and Austroasiatic) and another that is playing a significant role in the region in modern times (Southern Han Chinese). Yes filipinos are came from China and Taiwan.
The truth is most Spaniards who came to the Philippines are from Andalucia, Basque Region, and Madrid. Greeks from Malta, as well as Italians from Sardinia, arrived with them; then French from Gibraltar and Camargue migrated to the Philippines too and the Portuguese settled in many provinces too. These people started to call themselves “FILIPINOS.” They wanted to break away from the power of the KING OF SPAIN. Only those “Castilians, Argentinians and Mexicans are loyal to the king during that time.” They studied and learned all the native dialects in the country; they mixed the Spanish creoles “Ermiteño and Basque Caviteño” with the local dialects and created the “TAGALA” known as TAGALOG. The Native locals of the country were called “ INDIOS.” They thought they were similar with the Incans, Aztecs, and Pacific Islanders.” Governor Narciso Claveria not only imposed the Spanish Names but FORCE ALL OF THESE EUROPEANS TO Intermarry WITH THE LOCALS. NOLI ME TANGERE explains that the “MODERN FILIPINOS are a mixture of EUROPEANS, LATINOS, AND ASIANS.”
1:28 When you say “a traditional asian look”, I think what you’re talking about is the stereotypical look of asians and if you say it like that I would think also that you’re girlfriend is asian because she has the “traditional asian look”. lol Yes, It’s south/east asian features because we also have west Asians or Middle Easterns by Western people, West Asians are the Indians, Caucasians, Afghans, etc.

That breaks my heart that the majority of people around the world never thought that Filipinos are Hispanic, my lineage has a Spanish side and I'm very proud of it.
You guys got it entirely wrong. Filipinos have lighter skin not because of intermixing, but because the picture theyve shown, are Aetas, which is the first indigenous people that entered the Philippines which is of negroid race. And the most common race in the Philippines that is like 99% of the country, are austrenesians which is of mongoloid race, and they came from southern china. Even if a filipino have spanish ancestry, most of them only had like 5-1%, thats not enough to alter their genes to be more "pale" Chinese genes are way more prevalent
the group of Pacific Islander Nation does not include the Philippines and the FILIPINOS in particular!!What country is Pacific Islander?Pacific Islanders refer to those whose origins are the original peoples of Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia. Polynesia includes Hawaii (Native Hawaiian), Samoa (Samoan), American Samoa (Samoan), Tokelau (Tokelauan), Tahiti (Tahitian), and Tonga (Tongan).Only Fil-Ams have these identity crisis.Anthropologist refered FILIPINOS as Austronesians not Pacific Islander!!they can tell it from the HAPLOGROUPS and Genetics!!
The Modern Filipinos are originated from Southern China, “About 40% of the Philippine population are people who’s ethnic origin originated from Southern China whilst the majority’s ethnic origin originated from Ancient East Asia (*Austronesians) Do Filipinos have Spanish blood? Many people in The Philippines think they have Spanish ancestry and families spread that story down through the generations, but the reality is the vast 99% majority of the Philippine population have no Spanish ancestry. Why is it that only 3% to 5% of Filipinos have Spanish blood despite 300 years of colonisation? Because Spain didn’t have the same policies for Philippines compared to South America where mass extensive race mixing, genocide, and cultural replacement all occurred. Their also wasn’t a large migration of Spaniards in Philippines in the first place hence why the old culture of the Philippines is still attained and most of the Philippine population do not carry Spanish ancestery. Are Filipinos and Pacific islanders look the same? Yes, Pacific Islanders are originated from Taiwan and The Philippines, but, are Filipinos and Pacific Islanders look the same? the answer is, nope, Pacific Islanders are heavily mixed with Papuans and Melanesians, while a sizable portion of the Philippine population are Asians, mixed with Southern Chinese and other East and Southeast Asians groups.
Phillipines people are Asians. They're not pacific islanders. Pacific islanders are Polynesian and melenesias. As a pacific islander I can clearly see them as Asians, they're not similar to us in anyway. Not by culture, not by looks etc...

At home, we are bilingual Bisaya,/Tagalog but it gets crazier when we go home to my maternal grandparents as my Grandfather speaks Inlonggo/Spanish & some Nihonggo(Japanese) & my Grandma speaks mainly in a very sweet, soft-sounding Ilonggo dialect and when we go back to the city after a week-long vacation with my paternal grandparents, we converse to them mainly in Bisaya/Tagalog. Crazy right??? But for me personally, though I understand all dialects, I always answer or converse back either in Bisaya or Tagalog & some English 😁
I'm a Filipino but I have a spanish and mexican ancestry in my family. But in majority I call myself asian but I could consider myself somewhat hispanic
Did you DNA test or something?
Other people in Hawaii know they’re not Hawaiians.
Being Hispanic is not about genetics, it's about culture.
Just Dabbling before happy hour 🍺🍺 I'm 100% Filipino and most of my relatives have Spanish names.
( not that many Spaniards actually migrated to the Philippines) Acknowledge your ancestors if you have that blood but don’t let someone call you Hispanic just because you are Filipino.
you literaly have chinese last name lol oh well filipino is not a race anyway
@@MrLance0113hmm..actually its a Filipino-Chinese surname. It’s no secret that the Philippines is multicultural. In fact there are quite a few Tagalog words that have a Chinese origin. You are correct that Filipino is not a race but it IS an ethnicity as well as a Nationality and these are very important to ones cultural identity so it shouldn’t be so easily dismissed.
I'm half ifugao and half ibanag both is a ethnic groups in the Philippines
I don't really care. Its only an issue when living in the US.
Filipino is not an ethnicity but a national identity. It's like cooking a bunch of ethnicity/language and producing one final product. We are diverse as our islands are.

Filipinos are Hispanic. Spain displays 22 flags of Hispanic countries including the Philippines in the celebration of Dia de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day) in Puerta del Sol, Madrid. Philippines is also included in the Ibero-American System and as such qualify for an expedited Spanish Citizenship and access to the benefits of the European Union.
"This year Equatorial Guinea and the Philippines are added to the list of Hispanic countries, thus highlighting the global character of the Spanish-speaking community."

That makes sense! Some of my cousins have English last name s
YES. I don’t see why this is even a question or issue.
Hence they where called Hispanic (not to be mistaken as latinos of south america).
you haven't heared chavacano, they speak 70% spanish they just located down south of the Philippines, hope you'll react on it too
Chavacano is to spanish is just like singlish/manglish is to english.
@@adrianwakeisland4710 I am Polynesian
@@adrianwakeisland4710 I thought it was only the Chamorro people that are more related to the Filipinos. Chamorro ancestors are directly from Filipinos. It was the Chamorro people that ventured in the Pacific separate from the rest of us Micronesians. All of us other Micronesians mixed with the Melanesians. It’s why Micronesian languages (excluding Chamorro) are very different from other Austronesian languages. I found similarities with my language (Chuukese) and some of the languages in Northern Vanuatu. And I seen Chamorro isn’t considered an Oceanic language.
It’s east asian features because we also have west Asians or Middle Easterns by Western people, West Asians are the Indians, Caucasians, Afghans, etc.
Thnx Barbie 🤟🏼😂😂💯💯💯

What would Filipinos be after another 100 or 300 years specially now that the world is becoming just a small village!
Great Reaction 👍

The Modern Filipinos are originated from Southern China, “About 40% of the Philippine population are people who’s ethnic origin originated from Southern China whilst the majority’s ethnic origin originated from Ancient East Asia (*Austronesians)
Do Filipinos have Spanish blood?
