Turning my Historical Costumes into Cottagecore Fashion

- With the current trend of Cottagecore picking up in 2021, I've noticed just how much of it is clearly inspired by historical fashion! So, what better way to make use of my costume closet than to mix and match some modern ensembles together. I worked to use as few modern pieces as possible (it's really just a belt that seemed to go with everything). A few of my chosen items ended up being quite difficult to coordinate, but I not only feel fairly successful with the final ensembles- I also know a few historic pieces (or modern) I would love to make to balance everything out!
I tried to come up with a variety of outfit styles, and I admit they aren't all in my typical taste, but hopefully this will give you a few inspirations on how to pull pieces from your collection and make them work for everyday. Historybounding isn't new- but I do believe it's getting easier and easier to blend with modern styles. I've always found Edwardian fashion to be a simple and easy era to pull from, with it's more tailored vests and shirts, but what about Regency or 18th century? I have a MASSIVE collection of 18th century pieces from my time in Williamsburg (and that's after selling off most of it). I wanted to make sure I pulled from lots of different eras for this challenge!
To top it all off, Abby and I were able to run up to the mountains nearby and hide away in a little fairy tale cottage for a couple of days. We've got tons of great content from that trip, so keep an eye out for more pictures and video!
Thanks to @AbbyCox for the photography!
And thanks to @MorganDonner for coming up with such a perfect term for historical everyday escapades

The historical costumer to hobbit pipeline is severely under recognized and we need to talk about it
16:50 - Noooo oooone astounds like Gaston, history bounds like Gaston, no one swooshes their skirts all around like Gaston!
I will be stealing this for an Instagram caption at some point thank you for your services
I had to sing this out loud!!!!
They're fitted or gathered or frilly, maybe they've got gores with flare. Not an inch of them ragged or pilly, and every last seam is all felled down with caaaaarrrre!
😂❤️❤️
Roflmao yep I see it
Gorgeous! The one with the vest is so professor coming to the countryside to finish a book and maybe accidentally solve a murder, the green and purple one is your eccentric neighbor who collects Tarot cards and the one with yellow coat is definitely Newt Scamander's distant aunt on her quest in Romania. Love them all.
Amazing analysis, I want to be all of these people 😅
I want to be Newt Scamander's aunt's (grand)daughter, i could just imagine my life with her, kinda Enola Sherlock vibes
The one with the plaid vest gave me heavy Rachel Maksy vibes. ^ ^
My era of recreation was early medieval (UK) Scandinavian Iron Age. I think we could call that ‘Rectanglecore!’
hello fello early period person! Best winter clothes ever!
same here! actually wore one of my tunics all winter with thermo leggins. so comfy and warm! and i sometimes wear my linen underdresses as summer dresses :)
Waves from 950ad Gotland! I'm considering wearing my apron dresses this summer. I wear my sarks as nighties.
Hey, are you uk based? Where do you get your linen from? *everything* I'm finding is way too thick a weave, to the point that it looks like canvas :(
@@halu959986 not uk-based, but have some reenactment friends in the uk, i can ask them. in germany most bigger fabric stores sell some sort of thin linen. even ikea has some.
not to be gay but all of my woodsy magical librarian fantasies are coming true so thank you for that nicole i really appreciate it
I think for bounding purposes, the yellow overgown naturally lends itself to being paired with cigarette pants and a 50s top to make a "hostess pajamas" style outfit. I also see it as part of a 20s style boho outfit. I think it would be lovely paired with indigo or dark brown pieces.
11:48 If you listen closely, you can hear Bernadette wailing in the distance and despairing over floof physics.
A lot of costubers make a modernly wearable outfit based off of only one period, could you do a "picking all my favorite fashions" and putting them into a single outfit? Like maybe the cape thing from the 1700's and the high waist from the regency and the uber sleeves from the victorian, and the lace insertion/pintucks from the edwardian or whatever pieces from each period you like and make them into one "modernly wearable" outfit?
This video is just perfect! :)
I started sewing recently and mostly make historical garments then worn as cottagecore clothes (e.g. Bernadette's pirate shirt). This tactic is just amazing for people who like fashion history but don't have occasions to wear costumes (like me).
Same!
Most cottagecore things I see are like, gingham, frilly, fluttery, muted pastels... Nicole's version is like, what if cottagecore but most elegant witch you've ever met. I love it.
I now definitely want to make an 1890's vest and an 18th century petticoat in coordinating colors. * adds to the "to make" list * * returns to current sleeveless kirtle project *
"I'm a really boring person when it comes to color"

Nicole, With a collection as large as yours, that extends over as many eras as yours...I would enjoy a video showing how you store/catalogue/preserve your wardrobe of historical clothing.
Really adorable! I love re-thinking what you already have! I recently (intentionally) dropped 55 pounds. I'm now embarking on a project to refit all my clothes. I will donate a lot but plan on pulling apart seams on many pieces and refitting them to my new silhouette. When all else fails, I do a lot of color blocking. I loved this video to give me ideas about how to reshape pieces and use pieces differently than before. I have plenty of thread. I do NOT have plenty of money to replace an entire wardrobe! Thank you, Nicole!
The good thing is, that downsizing clothes is easier than making them bigger. ^ ^
The yellow overdress would be great as a belted wrap over a tank & jeans.
Storing the things you made in archival boxes is a flex
I love that you’re creating such cute outfits to show off all your beautiful handmade clothing. The history bounding trend kind of reminds me of being a little girl and playing dress-up with my grandmother’s old clothes (vintage 1940’s clothing, and earlier). We’d put on fashion shows for her and my mother. It appeals to not only my current aesthetic preferences, but to my inner child who loved to dress up.
In which we learn that the color of Nicole's soul is somewhere in the neighborhood of oatmeal (fond)
Oh to have pieces of clothing spanning centuries to mix and match. I would LOVE to have a wardrobe like this, it would be so so much fun to get dressed everyday.
The forced perspective at 4:05 made me think the bed was a twin! Then she enters with the garment box and I was shooketh! Big bed feels.
The photoshoot at the end with the black velvet bodice outfit!
I absolutely got the vibe that you were in a cottage core ballet & about to do a solo dance.
Also that gold coat is flamboyant AF and I LOVE it.
whoa! that's a pretty cool transformation for all those pieces. I love cottagecore, but am angling hard for a RegencyCore movement to take over. For reasons...
Wonderful. To heck with making modern skirts, I'm just going to make a bunch of fun coloured petticoats and call it a day! Thanks for sharing your closet mix-and-match with us.
The smile as you threw that handful of clothes on the bed gives me LIFE
OMG! Boxes of beautiful clothes; I would be digging in them daily. The yellow overdress would look amazing over a pair of slim pants, like the ones Audrey Hepburn is famous for wearing. I think you forgot about the stunning jackets/coats you made from antique items last year. Love them!
xoxo's Sandie
Nicole's favorite colors? Neutrals! 😍😍😍 (my closet is full of blues) I was hoping to see that teal skirt used... maybe with the black bodice. Love that Regency coat, and the outfit you made for it!
Loved this. I think it would be really interesting to find one of the most difficult or unique pieces you have and try to style it for current times everyday wear for a variety of settings (casual/formal/party/wedding attendee, etc...) I know it's definitely something I'm trying to make sure I can do as I dive into making my own clothing using victorian period patterns and techniques. Thanks for all of the work you put into the videos!
I love seeing some more of your menswear out and about! And that cottage looks like the stuff of dreams.
The hilarious part is where it almost sounds like you are time traveling and coming back with pieces from each era for your haul. Thank you for sharing!
The outfit you’re wearing in the intro (at least the bodice) reminds me of bunads/Scandinavian folk costumes, which are typically based on late 18th or early 19th century clothes, especially with the blouse/shirtwaist underneath. To strengthen the association, a brooch with dangly discs of shiny metal at the top of the neck slit would be a lovely addition.
That was my first thought, too!
I actually think it's from Voriagh and that dress was designed with inspiration from bunads.
I think it's great that you're thinking of how you can use your period stuff in a modern context.
That red skirt outfit that you tried on first is so pretty and reminds me of Ezmerelda from Hunchback of Notre Dame.
I wear black, brown, green and grey.... Nicole you've definitely got color! Lovely ensembles :)
I can't think of anything to say except, that this whole video was so dang cute and adorable!!! 💕💖
Also the bed and bed covers are really nice
You are an amazing seamstress and your period garments are beautifully awesome. Thanks for sharing sweetie.
I love this! Personally I LOVE wearing my regency short gowns as just like normal summery crop tops. I always get SO many compliments and I love getting to explain to people what they are!
That thumbnail is a dream historybounding outfit! Gosh, so cute~! You have gorgeous taste.
History bounding is one of my favorite things, so many possibilities! I once paired a simple thrifted button-up linen shirt with dark wash jeans and 18th century stays and it was so cute!
My historical stuff and my everyday wardrobe is already mashing together a bit, but it would be fun to do someting like this and test some combos that are a little more out there.
This reminds me of the Japanese Mori fashion. Such a lovely look that emotes wandering through the forest.
What a tremendous video! Really love this! I’m embarking on cottage core and I’m 66!
I suddenly feel great about myself for limiting my historical wear to one closet that I share with the hubby. But I totally love the idea of wearing my historical stuff every day.
This must have been twenty years ago, but I was at a vintage show once and there were a bunch of 20 year old girls wearing vintage petticoats and lingerie and I guess that was cottagecore. My favorite was the madder rose petticoat. You could have paired it again with the checked vest I think. I like packing three or four hero pieces that can be used over and over.
This is the most charming thing. I loved seeing you come up with the outfits. I honestly thought there were some Looks in there.
Your intro has become a Pavlovian trigger for my mind to calm down and Learn.
Maybe an even deeper purple skirt with the green collar/belt?
Great job -- thank you so much for sharing. Fifty plus years ago, this is what I wanted to do -- but no opportunities -- then life intervened. I so enjoy seeing what you're doing & have done. Thanks again for sharing.
It's never too late?
The last photos were lovely and reminded me of the 1910-1930s pictures of Hollywood stars at home.
Literally the dream wardrobe right there! I've only just started sewing so I can only dream of a historical wardrobe like that.
These looked like awesome options for outfits. Makes the costuming much more useful.
All of the garments you have in your collection are so lovely !
Thanks for sharing this styling video!
Just loved this! Maybe you could show us some of your "newer" vintage pieces one day. Very impressed with your knowledge and sewing skills. It was great to see your thought process in this creative adventure.
This was SO beneficial to me! I'm getting into historical fashion as an older woman now, and I've wanted to make this or that, but I'm not going to go to any fancy parties or anything, but I LOVE some of these shirts/chemises/blouses and skirts, kirtles and vests. Thank you for showing me that it's possible to mix and match and look 'normal' to anyone who doesn't understand historical clothing.
I love this video!!! As always, your videos are always amazing, thanks!
Gosh, I desperately want a tour of every single piece in your wardrobe! I glimpsed some fabulous stuff
Ahhhh those came out so cute!!! In addition to the two you picked out for the photo shoot, I also really loved the trousers one with the sash and open vest!
Yes! The sash belt really pulled that outfit together for me!
It's probably too silly, but I would love seeing that yellow coat over a very tailored menswear suit, or even go full modern with skinny pants, a ruffled blouse, and that coat.
Your Disney princess poses at the end made my day!
More videos like this plz!! 💕 Could we have one on how to do this same thing with more of a normal everyday wardrobe? I don't have a lot of costume pieces so I'm curious if I could still manage this vibe with my modern clothes.
I don't own many normal modern clothes, so I can't help much there 😂
@@NicoleRudolph That's okay! One thing I love about stuff like this is that everyone kind of just uses what they have and so everyone's "cottagecore" is unique and different.
Maybe a collaborative video? I know Morgan Donner did a kind of mash-up of 'historical-looking outfit without actually needing vintage or reproduction clothes' and 'how to dress warmly in the winter while still looking old-timey'.
Rachel Maksy has also done quite a few videos showing ways of styling modern items to make them look vintage, although her target time period is mostly later (mid to late 1900s)
That pelise literally has me drooling!
Love it! I want the pattern!
I also loved the shirt/dress combo you were wearing in the first half of the video! It’s adorable
I really enjoy the long yellow jacket. It took my breath away when it came on screen. Sorry I didn't hear what it was called
The first outfit from your two favourites reminds me of snow white? Weirdly? Something about it. I feel like history bounding is what Disney had in mind with its costumes. Cherry picking for aesthetics! You look fab in everything as always, and Id love to stowaway in your wardrobe!
Done some screenshots for inspiration. Definitely copying some of the ideas; the vest, apron and trousers with scarf/belt are sooo gorgeous. Love it.
Nicole saw my Instagram story and I wanted to crawl in a hole and die but I have emerged to be a raging lesbian in her TH-cam comments section, as always 😍❤️
I love how much of your personality is coming through in this video!
I would put a black button up with the white skirt with the black band.
These were all so gorgeous!!! And tbh, if I'm not wearing at least 3 different eras, I'm doing something wrong...
Being cheeky here, I feel the first of the chosen outfits was missing a basket of apples and the second a nice handheld telescope :P Your videos are always o lovely Nicole! Thanks for your work!
Now I want to make some of those historical bounding clothes myself😭 because they're so cute. I cannot❤️❤️❤️
I was surprised not to see the yellow ribbon corset you made on here, I’d think it would be gorgeous in a lot of these outfits.
The last yellow thing that “defeated” you- what is it? It confuses me haha
Some 19th century overgown.
AHHHHHHH so good! So fun, so creative! I can't wait to have more me made clothes so I can try this out. Your petticoats are beautiful. Thanks for this.
Being only here by mere happenstance the knowledge and skill is brilliant. Oh and this is totally (fascinating) nuts!!
The last one was my favorite but I did love that purple skirt.
Oh my goodness this was such a fun challenge. I love the blending of various pieces from different times to make unique cottage core looks. Love this idea!
Great job, so fun!
I loved your two favorites. And the yellow topper, WOW. Hope to see it again with the new things.
So may fantastic outfits. Plus that long coat looked amazing. me want one. :}
That coat in look 6 was my favorite. My fantasy outfit would have that item, but in black. Both my "normal" wardrobe and my history (more fantasy) bounding clothing is black. When I get dressed in a rush or if fatigued, that common color can produce some weird clothing-type paradoxes!
Gotta love stays with their million miles of cords! :)
Wonderful video! I also love the music and asmr quality you have to your videos, they're high quality and methodical, and make me excited to sew at the same time. And I always appreciate seeing how other people tie in their more "costumey" to be more modern wearable.
LOL…the first photo shoot outfit had me expecting to see seven little men trooping up to join you for supper!
It'd be so cool to see these paired with your vintage pieces/rest of your wardrobe! They don't have to be strictly historical they can just be clothing that you wear!
Everything looks lovely. I’m drooling over the coat!! I think I’m in love... wonder how that style would look on me?
I literally was taking a quick photoshoot of the cottagecore dress I just finished when I saw this was posted today! We are going to come out of quarantine looking like hobbits!
outfit number 6 without the coat is my favorite!
TWINSIES
The wool vest with skirt is totally dark academia to me. Love it!
Great outfits! I love 40s and 30s, just become aware of cottagecore and I just adore victorian and Edwardian......so I am firmly 'I'm not sure core!'😂
You look amazing as always! Those photos at the end certainly fit in with the cottage to perfection. Thanks for sharing your thought process as well as your amazing outfits.
I need to make myself a coat like that. It looks so wonderful whimsical.
So, cutaway to ad - and it’s a Sasquatch struggling with a swarm of mosquitos in the woods 🤣
The Algorithm has learned to make jokes.
Okay, I love all of these and would actually wear them all if I had any of these styles! Beautiful "modern" looks with your historical pieces!
Really cool to see Nicole's completed projects being stored in archival-quality boxes & tissue paper like the unique art pieces that they are! 👌 I swear these reproduction/reinterpretation projects by well-known costubers are going to turn into real collectors' items...
It's interesting to watch someone finding their clothing niche. It is very akin to listening to musicians' early music and finding that moment -- that song -- that became their sound. It's a process finding that exact spot where the clothes stop being costumes and suddenly become "my clothes."
I think it’s so great that so many people are appreciating my all-time favorite aesthetic. Like, fairytale princess in a mystical forest aesthetic, cottage core, whatever you call it, has always been my dream to embody
I think I would have tried the black velvet with the purple skirt. I'm not sure what happened
I loved the creativity of all these outfits you created! This was so fun to watch and the final photos at the end we’re so magical ✨
I think the black velvet bodice with the rust petticoat and the belt is the big winner.
What a great and inspiring video!
The picture on the left at 26:04 is the cutest fairytale picture! It's like the Snow White version of when Buttercup bids Wesley farewell in the Princess Bride!
