I just watched this for the first time. I loved the scene where they plant the charges. Having the Japanese footsteps in the Atmos channels and moving around back and forth from left and right is really incredible. I missed a couple seconds of the actual movie because I was enamored with the directional audio
I love those old war movies. Love to see 12O'Clock High with Gregory Peck as the hard nose Brigadier General Frank Savage in 4K and Merrill's Marauders as well. New subscriber.

Another epic movie by the late Great Director David Lean, like Lawrence of Arabia he also directed Dr Zhivago.
Unfortunately with modern technology, these epic moves aren't being made with real world locations. Sad!

4k done right puts Blu ray to shame
I watched a 70 mm version of Lawrence of Arabia in an Imax; it was awesome, wonder if this one also had a 70 mm print?
It was shot on 35mm Cinemascope, i‘d say it was not blown up to 70mm because the Cinemascope process is a bit tricky to copy on another filmstock. Since lawrence was shot on 70mm, it is of course much better looking.
Great review. Here's a suggestion for a video: Films you want to see on 4K. With a emphasis on movies that have no planned 4K release at present.

Films At Home. Is close encounters of the third Kind 4K transfer even better than this older movie classic??? It sucks no DOLBY ATMOS remix on Close E... maybe Spielberg didn't want it!

They should have digitally removed the heavy grain in the beginning.
The original Cinemascope intended frame 2.55:1 as it should be and not todays fake Cinemascope 2.35/2.40:1
Yeah. Who wants to see vertically when you can see horizontally. The thicker the black bars, the better the movie.

I had the dvd and I thought that was good and I bought this 4k because I heard rave reviews. Now I like that you mention the flaws on this 4k. I don't understand how you give rave reviews for a transfer that has flaws. On VHS it looks fine and also on laserdisc. I would not recommend buying this.

@@nationalcoasternews5798 No. But back in the 80's as I watched it on my 27" Sony on VHS I wasn't thinking the color looked off and some scenes got grain. I didn't know about widescreen then too.
It is a bad 4k disc. Dont like it at all. A very sad waste.

@@adriannn3720 I like the movie. Not liking the 4k version, but I guess a movie from 1958 will have grain and such. Its not as horrible as I have said, it is tolerable.
@@john2914 just watched the movie for the first time yesterday, I absolutely loved the transfer. I had never seen it before, so could not compare, but it looked great. Well, you can have your opinion, but it is an impressive restoration to me.
this is a 70 mm film . twice the res of 35 mm
70mm is just a blow up. It was shot in 35mm

The film and the script is a complete load of bollocks. It was a truly inaccurate summary of the horrors endured by POW's building the Burma Railway.
All POW's that I knew totally condemned the story, and regarded it as total fiction and an insult to their brutal captivity under the Japanese.
The bridge depicted in the film was one built adjacent to Songkurai camp that was situated on the banks of a swift flowing river, the Huai Ro Khi. 😠
