My mother taught us about our Scottish ancestry. She told us never trust any government. Because even when you think you can trust them, they will take everything even your life, if it brings them more power. And listening to this kinda proves her right. I mean we all knew the oppression that the crown put on people, but you dont really think about all of the innocent people killed for their power lust.

Low Government Trust is surprisingly felt here in Newfoundland and Labrador, where we had our way of life destroyed by the Canadian government when we were united with them in the name of centralization. There's still a lot of people here descending from the same people who lived in fishing villages on the coast that were forced to move inland or to larger communities that hold great resentment of not only the national government but also the provincial government since the politicians who voted for union were also the ones who screwed us over afterwards until they were voted out of office

“What I remember about the Massacre of Glencoe was... how quiet it was. During the waning hours of the 13th of February, 1692, the Regiment was discreetly transferred back to Glencoe. It was a silent trip. We all knew what was about to happen, what we were about to do. Did we have any doubts? Any private, traitorous thoughts? Perhaps, but no one said a word. Not on when we marched through their gates, not when the orders came down, and not when we began killing civilians. Not a word.”

"We will have peace," said Théoden at last thickly and with an effort. Several of the Riders cried out gladly. Théoden held up his hand. "Yes, we will have peace," he said now in a clear voice, "we will have peace, when you and all your works have perished--and the works of your dark master to whom you would deliver us. You are a liar, Saruman, and a corrupter of men's hearts. You hold out your hand to me, and I perceive only a finger of the claw of Mordor. Cruel and cold! Even if your war on me was just--as it was not, for were you ten times as wise you would have no right to rule me and mine for your own profit as you desired--even so, what will you say of your torches in Westfold and the children that lie dead there? And they hewed Háma's body before the gates of the Hornburg, after he was dead. When you hang from a gibbet at your window for the sport of your own crows, I will have peace with you and Orthanic.”

Apperantly when the two of them came to America in the 1880s, one of the MacDonald boys stole, then killed a steer owned by the Glovers. To this day, the two families are VERY resentful of each other, it's not uncommon to hear about one of the younger boys from either family being arrested after getting into it with the other.

And covers the grave o' Donald
And cruel was the foe that raped Glencoe
And murdered the house o' MacDonald
They came through the blizzard, we offered them heat
A roof ower their heads, dry shoes for their feet
We wined them and dined them, they ate o' our meat
And slept in the house O' MacDonald
They came from Fort William with murder mind
The Campbell had orders, King William had signed
Pit all tae the sword, these words underlined
And leave none alive called MacDonald
They came in the night when the men were asleep
That band of Argyles, through snow soft and deep.
Like murdering foxes, among helpless sheep
They slaughtered the house o' MacDonald
Some died in their beds at the hands of the foe
Some fled in the night, were lost in the snow.
Some lived to accuse him, what struck the first blow
But gone was the house of MacDonald”.

There were occasionally a few bouts of foreign country periods such as the French revolution and tid bits of the glorious revolution, especially the industrial revolution, but we never strayed away from French, British, and American history into other country histories such as Russian, Spanish or Italian. Aside for the foreign revolutions, my high school history classes taught in that order.
We were encouraged to check out other foreign nation's history's that were not explained in detail or only had small bits of information based on the courses we were in, but good luck getting American kids too worried about sex and clout to care enough to bother. Hell I don't think any student other than the nerds and I even knew about the Russian revolution and the rise of communism.

      @charliecharliewhiskey9403 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yup. Schools don't teach a great deal of British history. A little bit of the Tudors, 3 years of WW2, and a footnote mention of the Romans. I didn't even know until adulthood that the Anglo Saxons came here from what is today Denmark. Still don't know the names of half the Kings of England throughout history. Wasn't taught anything about Napoleon, presumably because talking about him would mean mentioning Britain.
Oh, there was one more thing. We were taught how evil we were because of the slave trade, right before launching into American history that we didn't need to know.
Schooling in the UK doesn't teach anything useful. Not even our own history. It's just a place to put kids during the day, that is under the control of the State.

@Slawa Boga While the causes of the wars is more classical as Count mentioned, some of the acts committed were far from controlled. The throwing away of men's lives in the interest of a named man who never cared for them must be mentioned as well.
Sprinkled among the travesties are moments of honor and courage by lords and downtrodden.
Both aspects are able to teach a lesson and should be open for honest discussion and beneficial exposure. America as well. When it comes to killing people, no hand comes away clean.
I would certainly listen to the Count give a blunt account of any event he saw fit, but I think he seems motivated to teach about his people to his people, and I find that honorable.

“They have created a desert and called it peace” is a quote taken from an ancient British monarch (pre-angles, so Celtic Brit king) giving a speech warning of the Roman invasions under Claudias. The speech is preserved in the histories of Tacitus. The full quote (translated from the Latin to English of course) goes like this:
“Robbers of the world, having by their universal plunder exhausted the land, they rifle the deep. If the enemy be rich, they are rapacious; if he be poor, they lust for dominion; neither the east nor the west has been able to satisfy them. Alone among men they covet with equal eagerness poverty and riches. To robbery, slaughter, plunder, they give the lying name of ‘empire’; they make a desert and call it ‘peace’.”

@EccentricSage If im not mistaken United Kingdom Mandates that all schools follow a standardised curriculum, the content of said curriculum is decided by the individual countries with the exception of Maths and English, this enables the native languages to still be taught.
However the reason why such things like this, and England/Britains attrocities as an empire often gets brushed over is because we only teach History up untill Year 8 (12-13 years old) after that they can choose History as one of their limited classes... not many students do, so they never get taught about the horros of the Brittish Empire and our dark past, but it is in the curriculum, you can argue well teach it before they chose the extra classes, but then in reality how do you really tell a story like this to under 13 year olds?

My great grandparents came from the Highlands (Chisolm) and settled in the Appalachian mountains in the late 1800s. I think you were correct, at least in my family, about Americans with Scot ancestry knowing a bit about our beginnings. Stories were passed down quite a bit. Pride was also ingrained in us from a very early age, now at 37 I am instilling that very same pride in my own children.

regarding the "Southern Hospitality" vs "Highland Hospitality", don't forget that a large portion of the people who settled the southern and eastern Appalachian regions of what would become the United States were actually displaced Scots. So really, the two things are one and the same, only separated by time and an ocean.
EDIT: This is also why so many Americans with Scottish ancestors have so much knowledge of Scottish history. Many of the Scots who could, fled here, and much of our tradition of independence and our "Fighting Spirit" come from Scots and Irish immigrants.

    • @noodle100100
      @noodle100100 4 ปีที่แล้ว +47

It also explains why some southern Appalachian words/slang aren't far off from words Scots and Irish use to this day. My great great grandfather immigrated to Appalachia from Scotland in the late 1800's, and my family's been here ever since. It's really interesting to see the subtle influences from all that in the culture out here.

No offence, in Ireland we have a phrase to describe those who claim to be Irish, without being born there, or having citizenship, simply based on where a family member was born a 100 or 200 years ago as "plastic paddies". I lived in North Carolina for 10 years and studied southern culture. There is a very high number of people with Scottish ancestry (there's even a Scotland county in NC). There's a reason why the Confederate flag design was based on the St. Andrew's cross, and why fried food and warm hospitality is widespread. Much of southern U.S. culture can be traced directly to Scotland.
