    Dad had a 66 chevy pickup that had a 283 small block in it. He got rid of it 12 years ago and i was about 4 then. I remember riding in it once, didn't sound too healthy. Dad told me that it used about a quart of oil when you drove 15-20 miles lol!!

      So did all 66 impalas have a 283? I have a 66 but I don't know what engine I have

    • @bigjohns57
      @bigjohns57  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They had several engines in that period, the 283 and 327 were both utilized then.

    my first car was a '67 Chevy Sportvan 108. it had a 283 bored 30 over, square cam, 600 Holley, and an HEI distributor. man i love those engines... revs like a v6 but has power of v8. can't wait to make another one up.

    @bigjohns57 lol. I have been too. I don't get to get on there as much as I used to but I love it! I love all Tri-fives and as far back as I can remember I have said I'd have one! lol. Now I do.. ITs funny you'd said that about a '57 Four door.. Because a friend of mine just sold all all original matching numbers 4 door '57. It was in amazing shape and I knew the old women who had it, she drove it everyday and had owned it for 30 years! Yeah.. I'm just gonna rebuild the whole engine too.

    I hear that!!! This one was originally a 2 barrell but I came across a 327 4BBL intake with a good rebuildable Q-Jet and I just couldn't believe the difference in power!!

  • @bigjohns57
    @bigjohns57  15 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @Chevypower265
    @Chevypower265 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thats true and we'll find out if mine really is a pre '58 block, I'm going to give it a rebuild sometime, it has a bit of smoke on start up and sometimes at a slower idle, I think the biggest thing it needs is some new valve guides. But if I'm taking it down that far I'm just gonna do it all ya know, who knows how long its been since it was rebuilt..lol. Thanks a lot for what you said too! I love my car! I also love the hardtops too! You ever checked out Trifive.com?

  • @TwinStickFilms
    @TwinStickFilms 15 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sounds healthy too me! Headers would make it sound different, but i'm not sure you want that. If you are looking for a cam that's not aggressive i think a Comp 268 cam isn't too wild but still has a nice lope to it.

  • @bigjohns57
    @bigjohns57  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Chevypower265 They are all good!!! The only aggravating thing about the pre '58 blocks are the rope type rear main seal!! Mine is a '62 block, although the '57 I have was originally a 2 barrel, 185 horse 283. This one puts out around 250-260...Thanks for watching, thanks for befriending, and checked out your '56----VERRRY NICE!!!! Hardtops are my most favorites of the tri-fives!!

  • @bigjohns57
    @bigjohns57  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep that happened sometimes to those small blocks!! I used moly rings which have superior sealing qualities, but if you let one set up for long periods of time, and I mean years, oil leaks are common, especially through valve stem seals!!!

  • @bigjohns57
    @bigjohns57  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    With small bore, short stroke motors (and I'm assuming) basically stock heads and spring pressures, I reccomend Either a Comp cam 268 (summitracing search for comp 268 should bring it up) or a" Lun-00016" (also call in what's in quotes on summitracing). Had great luck with the Lunati on a Customers 305 in his 84 Monte Carlo. Still a passes emissions and dynoed at 228hp/268ft/lbs torque. Also had some CC Q-jet mods by another shop.

    @Chevypower265 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome! sounds great! I've got a 283 in my '56 Bel Air, dunno what happend to the original 265.. But from what the numbers tell me my 283 is from a '57 model.

  • @bigjohns57
    @bigjohns57  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're welcome!. The cam is an early 327 grind, the spec I can't recall at the moment...The heads were ported as well...
    I would stick to under 10:1 comp for a street motor, 11:1 is quite high and does not run well on pump gas, unless you plan to race it, run 93 with a fuel booster...Tell me more about this engine's specs, and how you plan to drive it, etc. Sounds like a good setup!!

  • @bigjohns57
    @bigjohns57  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    It don't take much!! It to me is one of the finest chevy blocks!

  • @BigRoy1978
    @BigRoy1978 15 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    tiny, yes. But its whats in my dirt track racecar! People kinda laugh when they hear how small it is, but you throw a .516 lift cam in it, 327 double hump heads, 350 intake with the right gearing it runs with 383's and 412's!

  • @Froggybomb
    @Froggybomb 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @5tonyvvvv I found these just today after looking up specs for my 283
    283
    Production:19571967
    Displacement:283 cu in (4.6 L)
    Power:220 hp (164 kW)-315 hp (235 kW)
    Bore and Stroke:3.875 in × 3.00 in (98.4 mm × 76.2 mm)
    mine's a 63' model, which is said to produce 280hp stock... well somewhere around there

  • @bigjohns57
    @bigjohns57  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @limabeens1 That's great!!! Glad you enjoy your engine, mine is technically 287 CI and mainly dressed this way because I wanted it to appear mostly stock for my 1957 Chevrolet. Ironically enough I have now just gotten to where I can drive it on a regular basis---and this vid is from 2 years ago LOL!! Thanks for watching!!!

    @Chevypower265 Oh yeah I.ve been a member of Trifive for a while now, and Also Ecklers classic chevy out of Titusville, Fla! I've been aTri-five fan all of my life, I like all Trifives, but the '57 does it for me the most!! I have a '57 4 door Belair sedan thatI hope to frame off restore one day. I rebuilt my 283 after it starting smoking, as I first did just the valve stem seals, and learned a valuable lesson 3 months later when the rings went behind it!!

  • @bigjohns57
    @bigjohns57  14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @boxer3main Yes indeed! This starter is a late 90s 350 starter, gear reduction and it WILL fit all small blocks with the staggered bolt to block pattern!!!

  • @bigjohns57
    @bigjohns57  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Right On!!! It will be a good match!! What trans do you plan on putting in it???

  • @bigjohns57
    @bigjohns57  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @LashoutUK Well my particular build is a 283 block, that has been bored .030 over, with 305ci heads from a 1982 Chevy Camaro, 58cc, the camshaft is common for a full size Chevy, like Impala, from the 327ci with single 4 bbl setup, of 1963 to 1965, and the intake is also a 327ci piece from a 1968 Chevy Chevelle, with a 4mv Quadrajet of the same vintage. The ignition is powered by the Pertronix 2 "PLUG AND PLAY" distributor with matching Flamethrower 2 coil, and pushes approx. 250 horsepower!!

  • @bigjohns57
    @bigjohns57  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    It really just depends on what you have in mind. The good thing is that 283s have a high reving capability, due mostly to its short stroke. Mine was bored 0.030 over and with 305 heads, it has 9:1 to 1 compression, and a healthy 250-60 horsepower, which is plenty for my type of cruising! What do you have in mind power wise????!!??!?

    I would love to soon!! Sounds like your friend may need a new belt, due to glazing from excessive heat or looseness, or if it looks good tighten it until it has about about 1/8th inch of slack.

  • @bigjohns57
    @bigjohns57  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh yeah I agree!! The 268 is one of the best, I stuck with the ramhorns because I was going for a "stock" look!! The cam I choose was a CS274 in melling, a common grind for 4 barrel small blocks. What really woke it up though was the flamethrower pertronix dist & coil!! Thanks for watching!!!

  • @bigjohns57
    @bigjohns57  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not quite, its a '62 small journal block bored .030 over, .020-.020 on rods and mains, heads are small cc 305 type, 60cc, intake and carb are from a '68 327, carb being a quadrajet 4mv, electronic ignition is a flamethrower 2, thanks for watching!!!

    Yes, although it looks stock to '57 specification, it has 305 CID heads, pertronix Flamethrower 2 ignition, a '67 327 intake with comparable a barrel Quadrajet, bored .030 over with a .020 underbore on the rods and crank, all of course balanced and blueprinted, the trans is a 350 Turbo with shift kit!

  • @kufd
    @kufd 16 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    badass!!!!!!!!! I have the same 283 engine to a TH350 trans running in my jeep, I added headers, and 4bbl Holly carb. it growls, did you put a cam in yours?

    bigjohns57, I use this video to show guys who say "I want straight pipe, no mufflers" on their cars. Its bookmarked on the shop computer.
    I think it sounds great, but I have to remind them that it's about 10x times louder in real life. The 'ram-horns' actually make it a bit quieter, but most of the dudes I deal with want something that sounds mean, but won't get the cops on them. Usually an Aerochamber and a Moroso spirloflow do the trick.
    Have a reply for jsta327.
