How to Identify Train Locomotives - TrainTalk, Ep.1

    You ever looked at a train locomotive and wondered, "What is that?" Especially if you're surrounded by..."railroad enthusiasts," you've probably heard plenty of "GEVOs", "ACes" that, etc. So, I have spent I don't even know how many hours compiling my knowledge of train locomotives (identifying them), for your viewing pleasure and maybe five bucks from ad revenue. Greetings, to those new and returning to my channel. Welcome to the first episode of my series, "TrainTalk," where we'll talk about all things railroad. Let's see where we go.

    @18:08 Almost. They de-rate them to 4400 HP but the -60 at the end signifies that it is a former 6000 HP unit. Same said railroads did the same thing with EMD units calling their rebuilt SD90MAC as SD9043MAC.

    Hi Loco, this is beyond great, your videos are wonderful, i live in the UK and have only been able to find a few reference books on USA power that distinguish the vast array you have over there, i'm coming to Cheyenne and Bailey yard next month so this video is a great help to me, and i guess i'm gonna have to put Atlanta on a trip soon to that yard you showed on another of your videos. God bless and please keep this up. Our freight scene in the UK is a quarter of what it was in the 80's........horse shit.

    This is a great video. A lot of good tips in this video for learning loco models and remembering them, just a couple things I wanted to point out. All of CSXs Dash 8s have low ditchlights, not just the Conrail ones. The M in AC4400CWM is actually for "Modernized" from what I heard. These units were rebuilt in recent years and rebuilds for these on CP, UP and CSX are still ongoing, with CSXs entire AC44 fleet currently in the process of being modernized over the next few years. These modern units dont just get new vents, but they also get a whole new cab and inverter cabinet, except for some UP units which didnt get a new cab. UPs C45s are not actually 4500 HP, they are 4400 just like all the others. They were only changed in the designation to differentiate them from AC44s. About 10 SD9043MACs are still active on the Indiana Railroad, but those are soon to be replaced with SD70Ms from UP, as well as there being 3 SD9043MACs active on CP, which are ex UP units that were put into MOW service as they await to be rebuilt into SD70ACUs.

    The one way I can tell the difference between an EMD and a GE is the exhaust placement. The stack for the exhaust on a EMD is closer to the cab as where the GE is closer to the rear

      However, like he has said yes, in order to look up the specific model, you’d have to do what he said however, if you’re more of a simpleton like me and you happen to know that the make of the locomotives is either EMD or GE then one of the most prominent ways to tell the difference isthe exhaust placement EMD have a tendency to put the exhaust closer to the cab or just above the actual electric generator as where GE have it away from the electric generator and more closer to directly above the diesel motor that runs the electric generator

    If you spotted an error (I've already spotted two), feel free to comment below.
    (1) In my diagram of the different locomotives, I put "Electro-Motive Division" instead of "Electro-Motive Diesel." Division was the old name when the company was under General Motors, hence being General Motor's "Electro-Motive Division" before becoming a separate entity.
    (2) In comparing GE and EMD tanks, I only showed one example of EMD tanks having a single offset cylinder when in reality an EMD tank can have two offset cylinders. This still looks distinct from GE tanks, though, so you should still be able to identify a GE fuel tank from an EMD one.

      the SD60 doesn’t have 3000 horsepower it has between 3600-3800 at 32:07

    One cool fact I learned from the SD70 series is that while the SD70M-2 is the locomotives official designation, the locomotive in it’s development stages was actually designated EMD SD70DCe. Also idk if this is true but there are some articles that states that the SD70M was actually the first variant in the SD70 line then followed by the SD70 but idk if that’s entirely true so I won’t state it as fact, just putting it out there! But good video!

      There's the SD70ACe which are being replaced due to Tier4 regulations, which are the ones that don't have the oversized Radiator shroud. Not able to tell you why I just know my friend is a big SD70ACe fan bur as they're being replaced there are fewer of them. Some of them are now SD70ACC.

    Im a beginner railfan. Knowing all of the loco types is a bit confusing. Ill try to use ways to ID the loco type like the paint job

    Great video, the only thing is there is no SD30, only GP30 and most Geeps date back farther than the 1970s. Other than that, very informative!

    Note another difference on the ES40DC compared to the ES44AC is the dynamic brake house or the grills at the top hard to explain in a comment. Either way ES40DC's of most sorts will have two grills spaced out with a large gap in between (this gap can be seen most predominantly on the conductors side). But as for the ES44AC most of them will have 3 grills with little to no space in between them. As for other GEVOs I've seen early built units with only 2 grills but pushed together and father back to the near end of the inverter area.

    If you're blind like me, you have to rely completely on the sound, and it seems that sound alone won't help to correctly identify a locomotive.

      Sound alone does actually help a lot. Especially when distinguishing between EMD and GE, and even distinguishing individual models, the sound of either the engine or the horn can really help you know what locomotive you are looking at.

    EMD never used the horsepower in their designations. The number goes by the number of improvements over the original FT locomotives.

      @@LocoProEMD switchers were on a completely different system. They started with NW series then went into SW series. The only 3 road units that coincided with their horsepower were the GP15 , GP18 and GP20. Of all three the youngest was the GP15. EMD's very first locomotives were switchers built in the late 30s.
