  • I did some white water kayaking with ColombiaRafting.com (I can't say enough positive things about the company). I was told the rapids were class 1, 2 and 2+. This video is intended to accompany my blog post (www.tysongoesou.... I had an absolute blast and I am far from a professional anything. If you ever get a chance to go Kayaking, please do, its a rush and crashing into water doesn't hurt. I filmed this all with my GoPro (hero 3+ I think)

    Thank you so much for posting! I unknowingly went down a class 4 olympic channel at a whitewater park. I couldnt roll and ended up swimming until I got rescued. I was terrified. They had to retrieve my boat and paddle at the end. Lost my shoes. Watching this reminds me it is normal and a learning process. I wont give up but I also wont be going on class 4. Lol

      I'm happy to post my amateur experiences and outright failures with the world. Now I look back on some of my videos and laugh about how much I've learned since then. Keep doing what you're doing, man.

    Went white water kayaking for first time last year. Got my boat right before the trip and didn't have any seat time or roll practice before I went down the Pike river. I feel the exhaustion from the wet exits watching this.

      That exhaustion is my clearest memory of the day haha.

    Sitting stiffly in kayak, paddle strokes short and choppy, fighting the river. I feel for the guy cause once you launch you often haven't much option but to try your best and hope your friends are ready to rescue

    You should upload more videos of kayaking! I would love to see your development over time, I’m just starting out, and would love to know a thing or two from your experiences :)

    But seriously, most unskilled kayaker shouldn't be at the end.. Someone more skilled person would be doing sweep. That doesn't look so safe to me.

      I agree with everything you said, but part of the fun of going to these countries and doing these things is knowing no one is going to hold your hand. plus, there were only three of us (including the guide) then we met up with another guide and his 1 client so it was easy for everyone to keep track of eachother.

    I took a class on rolling in a pool and was exhausted. I had a friend who used to teach kayaking and learned rolling should be fairly effortless. Find a good instructor to teach you so you don't keep practicing bad habits like lifting your head. My roll isn't bombproof but with a bit more practice I'm hoping it will be. Nice video!

      I just completed my first training (10 classes on the Urubamba River in Peru). But have not gotten very far with my roll. Now my classes are suspended until next year. What exercises should i do to train and prepare when i have to master that beast?

    I live beside a river that really is a class 1 & 2 and people have died kayaking on it. It isnt the water that hurts. Its the unexpected obstacles and undercurrent.

    Great video. I found myself holding my breath to help you not drown. I hope it helped. How long did it take you to learn to roll? I only have a 14ft touring boat and am trying but keep failing.

    • @tysongoesoutside
      @tysongoesoutside  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It only took me 2 days, but the class was me and 1 other person so it was very hands on. I also think the smaller boats make it easier. The biggest thing for me was thinking of it more as using my hips/butt to push the boat under me than to use my arms to pull myself over the kayak... if that makes sense.

    Nice vid. Saw you were using a Dagger kayak. How did you like it? Thinking about picking one up for lake and some river use in TX

    • @tysongoesoutside
      @tysongoesoutside  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, its the only Kayak Ive used and it was only for a two days, so my opinion on it shouldnt mean a lot but here goes. Im about 6'2" and have size 14 feet, and I fit in it no problem, so its roomy. I was able to eskimo roll it after just a day of instructions, so its pretty user friendly considering what I was able to as a beginner. Lastly, my guide had at some point mentioned that he was a kayaking champion (#2 in south america for his age?? or something like that) and he ran the same kayak as me, so maybe that means they are good, or maybe that just means thats all they could get in Colombia.
