    Well done Socceroos, considering what Argentina has been up to so far they have no reason to be afraid. In the light of the performances of teams like Wales, Denmark, Poland and Belgium, UEFA might need to rethink whether its qualifying process is really leading to the best outcomes in terms of qualified teams (one can only hope, given how Ceferin's brain works he will probably conclude that all is well).

    Football Soccer is only the No. 5 field sport in Australia, behind Aussie Rules football, Rugby Union, Rugby League and Cricket. Soccer in Australia suffers because many of the best and most skilful athletes choose other sports ahead of Soccer, so to be competitive in International Soccer has been a long road for Australia.

    • @mrd4785
      @mrd4785 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are 400% more soccer players in Australia than AFL. The rugby codes and cricket look absolutely pitiful in contrast to soccer as well. Go look up the statistics. Cricket Australia only makes a profit every 4th year when India tours and they get tv and sponsorship money to only just keep the whole thing afloat and only a few kiwis play Rugby Union these days. It has shrunk out of sight as a participation sport. The stats don't lie and the truth is out there. That is BS about the "most skilful" athletes choose other sports. You just don't walk across sporting fields from something like soccer to cricket or rugby. Completely different skills and body composition. I know the AFL can convert basketball players etc. at a mature age, but to be any good at soccer, you have to start at the age of 3-5 and dedicate a good portion of nearly every day of your life to it. There is far more money to be made in soccer than any other team sport if you are any good and that's why there are usually hundreds of Aussies playing in Europe at any time. The media won't show soccer on tv in Australia because they can't insert adverts every time the game takes a long, boring break like all the other codes, when they insert adverts for beer and tampons every 2 seconds. That's why vast numbers of households have advertising free subscription tv in Australia, just for the soccer.

      The team is highly talented. Some of the players are getting older though and aren't playing in the EPL or Bundesliga anymore, so for people who don't know the team, they're making assumptions based on where some of the guys currently play. For instance, Aaron Mooy has scored some great EPL goals against the likes of Manchester United and he's not that old anmd is currently winnint the Scotish league with Celtic. There are also guys in the team that just haven't been recognised and signed by top European clubs. For instance, Craig Goodwin who scored against France has been playing his whole career in Australia, when he's really good enough to play for half of the clubs in the EPL. Some of the guys are also up and coming talents, who are only getting noticed now and signed by big clubs. A lot of the team have had to sacrifice playing at the big clubs to make sure they were getting enough match time to be selected for Australia. Our goal keeper Mat Ryan for instance was the second goal keeper on the bench at Arsenal, but he left so that he could be number 1 for Australia. I agree though - underdog mentality was a big motivating factor.
