People can perhaps criticise China (not me - I love the place), but to say it is dangerous is crazy!
And it's not just China - I've travelled around East Asia quite a bit, an old English guy, travelling alone, in Japan, S Korea, Taiwan, and China, and in all those countries I felt completely safe. I always used public transport - never taxis, just regular buses and trains.
In my home town in the UK, there are streets I avoid after dark (more because of drunken people than dangerous people), but I was on a train that arrived in Shanghai after midnight, and walked two or three kilometres to my hotel, and never worried about it. I wouldn't do that in London, or New York, or Paris!
