You know what? This is THE FIRST video I have ever seen that thoroughly explains how to prune raspberries instead of tidbits here and there. Good Job Laura and Thank You!
Love your pruning videos, always so informative! I don't even have berry bushes, yet here I am, watching intently, haha!. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge and expert camera work 😊
Ooh, I love that you're running a test to see which method you prefer. I'm going to be doing something similar with my salvia this year. Can't wait to see the results.
Yay!! Thank you for this video. Raspberries are one of my absolute favorite berries. I cannot wait to trim my raspberries back and hopefully get them under control. I keep digging them up and passes them out to family & friends. I started with one plant over 15 years ago and now I have too many to count! Last year I froze over 10 quarts, ate countless handfuls and baked raspberry everything! Thank you so much for this well needed video!
This was perfect for this newbie. Our neighbors gave us half dozen raspberry plants last summer and I know nothing about it. Thank you. Love watching you with my morning tea ❤️
Hi Laura and Aaron! We had raspberries in zone 5 in Idaho and I don't remember them ever being pruned and they produced like crazy every year. My sister and I would pick them every other day and sell them for $3 per gallon. We probably averaged between 8-12 gallons each time we picked, and the raspberries were the size of thimbles and were so good! I don't know the variety because they were alreay planted when we moved into the house. Thank you so much for sharing!
Good evening from Australia 🇦🇺 I just noticed your wearing your gloves while pruning, question are raspberries a thorny plant? So much info, you seem to be a walking encyclopaedia when it comes to all the different types of plants regardless whether it’s flowers, fruit, berries, herbs or vegetables. The information is so invaluable to your GA family. Thank you so much for all the videos and sharing all your knowledge. I just love it.
Had no idea growing raspberries takes so much knowledge! If you start from scratch at least you know what kind you have. My raspberry IQ is elevated now.
I just seen a post of someone asking what everyone’s favourite gardening show is to watch. In the comments was a long list of everyone posting “Garden Answer”. Of course, my reply was the same. I wait patiently or should say impatiently for your video every morning. The saddest part is when the video ends.
Good morning, Laura☕️ Berry informative ! 😆 I’m excited to see the difference and looking forward to seeing you plant 🌱 grapes 🍇 too. Have a Blessed Day 😊🐈
I grew raspberries years ago, mine were starts from my sister in law's patch. I did not know at that time that pruning was needed to produce healthy plants. To say the least my patch did not survive. Wish I knew then what I just learned this morning! Maybe I will give it another try now that I am more educated! 😊✂️🌿❤
I do not know what it is about your videos but after watching them I feel like I have the knowledge to go out and concor any task I need to do in the garden. Thanks to you I had the confidence to start my very own cut flower farm business. Thank you very much for all the wonderful videos that have given me the courage to garden like I have always dreamed. ❤️
Hi from Texas, I watch your videos daily, for years now. Even though I do not garden, live in an apt with a tiny 8x4 ft patio, and am senior citizen, I tune in. I learn, love gardening a side of God's provisions, nature and flowers. I'm a sunshine girl, love you and your family relations, style, and manners...(on camera). Always be safe, and God bless.
I will say it again I love the look of those raised beds. They give an elegant look to the area. I am trying to figure out how I can create one for my small city outdoor space in the back yard.
I watch too much GA videos! I was thinking about potting up some old PW containers with soil. I was wondering if bags of soil were frozen. If they were frozen, I was going to put them in the flower shed to thaw. Then I remembered, I don't have a flower shed, it's Laura that has a flower shed. LoL
I love that you mention what to do if you don't know what kind they are. We moved to a house that had an existing green house with a bunch of different tomatoes. I have no idea what to do with them. I've never grown tomatoes before
New Gardner in Ohio: I am glad to see this video. I have planted raspberries in a container to winter over. I use your videos as a reminder to know when to care for them. Thank you so much and I will be getting out there to tackle the raspberries.
I have June bearing but they produce almost all the raspberries at the end of July and my blackberries at the end of August. For my raspberries I have a variety of zero thorns thank God, with those I always snip the top off at the desired length this makes them stop growing upwards and put shoots all over the cane that will bear fruit that year. I just bought one gold raspberry so I’m excited to eat those this year
I learn stuff from this amazing channel that I didn't even know I needed to learn...lol I seriously just planted raspberry, blackberry and blueberries YESTERDAY! I had no idea what to do with them...lol It's almost like Laura was stalking my homestead...lol Thank You! Fabulous content, like always!
I would love to know this as well. I have blackberries that I planted 4 years ago as well as a ton of wild blackberries that grew naturally along the forests edge.
I would also love to know this! I have triple crown thornless and need to do a better job pruning to increase my yields! Also, I would love to replicate the beautiful wooden planter boxes, without the expensive wood costs!
So glad we're starting our son's raspberry patch a year after yours so we can learn from your baby patch! 😊 He has designated his birthday week at the end of May as "planting week" 🥳 Thanks for all the great info!
Hitting 👍is my 1st hit👍 Greetings from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸 I love this neat and attractive looking patch 👍 Happy Gardening Everyone. I'm planting tomatoes 🍅 in a clever way. It's a root grower👍
Yes this is right on time! I planted raspberries last summer and was dreading pruning! So daunting for me! Of course Laura comes in with the win on a super consice and short video! Many thanks once again!
Never in my wildest imagination would I believe that I would love a show watching someone work... I honestly think that if you were painting the fence and describing how it would dry I really enjoy watching you do that too! :-) You are just so happy doing whatever you are doing, it makes me happy too!
We had our second “trial” with the established raspberries. The first year I trimmed off all the old wood and their was nothing. Last year I did nothing and their was a bazillion blooms but not a whole raspberry to be found (they are fully enclosed to keep safe from deer and birds). I’m totally stumped.
In the Northeast USA, they are almost invasive, so they don't need tons of water; but Laura lives in a desert, so everything is watered daily during growing season.
You have inspired me, again, not a bad thing. I have no idea what type of raspberries I have as I inherited my garden from my mother-in-law when I moved to the farm, and the raspberries were established residents. I am going to try ‘mowing down’ half of the patch and see what happens. Thanks you for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm.
It’s so funny to hear that you are planting blackberries, when over here in Western Oregon they grow aggressively in every unmaintained place they can. I pick them on bike paths and fences all over my neighborhood. 😂 It just goes to show that every growing zone and climate is so different!
It would be so very helpful if gardening channels posted what USDA Zone they grow in. I had to look it up... Garden Answer is located in Ontario, Oregon with USDA Hardiness Zone 6b. I'm in Ohio USDA Zone 6a, so it's nice to now know we can grow similar even though I currently have snow.
Good morning Laura! I’m curious if you ever make jams or jellies with your berries? And if you do, do you prefer a certain type of raspberry for those? I grow muscadine grapes for jelly every year because it’s my favorite for jellies. I was thinking about adding one more crop to be able to make another kind, but wasn’t sure which would make the best jam, something yummy and sweet and productive. If you see and answer this, thanks in advance! If not, thanks anyways because I just love your videos 😊
I don't presume to know the answer, as I'm not Laura. However, for jarring/canning/ preserving: I think you want the type that bears heavily all at once, as opposed to slowly over the whole season.
@@nadinecartwright1979 thank you! I appreciate so much how kind and helpful the GA community is! I do know that I would want a type that would have a large harvest all at one time, same as the tomatoes that I can/jar. I’m more curious as to a flavor type/ease in growing. I know some berries are more tart than others, and some are just more flavorful and sweet, and some are just a pain to grow/maintain. I am more curious about that part. I’m not as familiar with raspberries as I am with grapes and strawberries. But I am definitely willing to learn! My family loves my homemade jellies and sauces, would be nice to have another offering for them and myself that wouldn’t be a super huge ton of work 🙂
I use a lot of my raspberries for jam. I have the fall bearing and prune the canes to the ground and do cleanup underneath in the fall. We have the dreaded Spotted-wing Drosophila here and those methods help manage them. If you find that your area also has the S-w drosophila, you can find more information about controlling them from your extension agent or just google the topic.
@@lindaannb I have never even heard of that pest, so I’m assuming we don’t have it in my area. 🤞🏼🤞🏼 I sure hope we don’t, I already deal with more than my fair share here in the south lol. (I’m going to war with slugs and june bugs this year…my hostas, roses, and hibiscus can’t handle another year of them 😫) But I am curious, since you do use yours for jams…what type of raspberry do you use?? There are just so many types, I’d hate to plant one and do all that work for one that makes a yucky jam 😬
Hi I was wondering how and when you trim your grape vines, I tried mine two years ago and I haven't had any fruit since so last fall I didn't trim it what did I do wrong?
I don’t have berries but I refuse to miss a video. I always learn something new or reenforce a practical skill that I should be doing when I watch. Happy Spring!
Wow posted two minutes ago and already ... 14 comments and 133 likes .... How does that happen so fast ... oh Yes and 628 views ..... !!!!! .... Just Wow .... for all of that Love for Laura .... !!! .....Big Hugs for you .... !!!
I have a large patch of golden raspberries that bear fruit in June and in August and I've never known how or even if I should prune. But now I do. Thanks.
I love all your videos you teach us so much but the videos when you, your mom and your sister go antiquing and get lunch are my favorite! You ladies are so much fun! I also think Benjamin is a wonderful boy so serious for his age so cute, sweet and yes adorable 🥰. I don’t have raspberries but who cares loved your info!
Really like my Heritage raspberry plants. They are primocane fruiting so I can just prune them completely to the ground in winter. They are erect enough that no trellis system is required.
Only about 12 canes per meter should be left, those that have the approximate vigor of a pencil. Otherwise there will be a lot of vegetation and the small canes will produce little. On the other hand, the buds at the base must be removed because of diseases (especially fungi). Sorry for my English, i am from Portugal!
Wow, thank you so much Laura. I now understand why some of my canes had berries and some did not. I can now get to purning and manage them better. The GRANDBABIES just love ❤️ to come over to Nana and Papa's house for a snack on all the berries we've been growing for them lol
Laura, would you cut criss-crossing canes so they don't rub against each other., like rose canes? Thank you for your imput! Love your vlogs with the cute pics of the kids through out them. Love when Aaron joins in on the vlogs, always like everyone's opinions when your doing projects together as a family .. Lastly, I enjoy learning about the differences such as in this vlog, June bearing vs ever bearing and seeing the different products you use to get these beds going for the season .
I wish you would link to a follow up video so we can see the results. Just did my razzers today in British Columbia. Some of the new canes are 4 or 5 inches already! Thank you both, I love your channel.
Did my berry tone this past weekend...my fall gold raspberry plants, my pink blueberry plant and my black berries are awake and leafing here in nc zone 8a
New raspberry grower here, so, just want to clear up something wrt everbearing and pruning 1st year canes down to the ground. If I understand the process correctly, you will cut down all the 1st year growth in the spring - which is actually the beginning of year #2 for those canes. So, it took an entire growing season for those canes to grow and develop buds, but, not grow berries. Now, in year two, those canes have to start from the ground and grow, develop buds, and bloom into berries - AND you will get a bigger harvest? It seems counterintuitive, but, I would rather have a larger fall crop than two small crops spread over two seasons. I just want to make sure I am getting this down right, because it does seem counterintuitive - but, I'm a newbie and you have years of experience. Looking forward to your reply - Also, would love to see a follow-up video comparing the two pruning methods you used on your plants.
Thank you so much! I just watched the blueberry video the other day and was hoping for a raspberry video. Now I just have to find the tags for the bushes we purchased last year to know which kind they were!
Perfect timing! I planted raspberries late summer/early fall. They are Glencoes… it that what you said you are planting next? Nervous about 1st pruning but you make it sound like all’s good any way- just may affect # of berries
This was very interesting! It will be neat to see what happens between the two beds with different pruning methods. I am wondering if you sent the tubers to Ginny at Creekside like you discussed last year when they were visiting you? I haven't heard her say anything about them in her videos. Just wondering. Love watching all of your videos and seeing you sooooo excited about planting and getting the ground ready for planting! Thanks!
wow, you are an encyclopedia of knowledge about so many plants... how do you remember all that??? can't wait to see your berry crops this year... wouldn't it be nice if all the plant people got together and named all fruiting stuff the same? like tomatoes could be in agreement with raspberries instead of determinate/indeterminate, etc etc... would make remembering stuff easier!! lol... thanks for the video!! ps.. enjoying my coffee this morning out of new GA travel mug along with my new GA water bottle filled and ready for the morning!
So helpful!!!! I have one raspberry - tiny, bush patio plant. Not sure what to do or when. Don't remember what kind - my cat pulls out the tags and plays with them. Constant quest for lost tags and I'm loosing that battle.
What eatable plants could be planted with raspberries to make good use of space. Would be interested in foodscaping and permaculture sustainability episodes. Both beauty and practical gardening alot of people have limited space.
Hello from Sydney Australia!!! This has to be the video where all the pennies drop!!! Thank you so much for this!!! We have 2nd year rambling raspberries which we mowed half down in its first year but we couldn’t understand why some branches grew fruit this 2nd year while others didn’t!!! This totally explains that now. Wow!!! Now just have to figure out if they are ever berry or the other type so will try your test!! Thanks guys!!
Haha when you said mow down I thought mow down with lawnmower 😄 That was my dads method of handling rhubarb. It evolved to gasoline and flame throwers 😂
Hi Laura, I have a couple of questions. My back yard is a bunch of weeds and a teeenie bit of grass, plus it is very uneven. I watched a video you posted on June 20, 2017 and it was super helpful to see how it was before and what a difference it made with minimal changes. My first question, do you have any videos on how to make different "rooms" in a garden to give it more interest? My second question, do you have a video touring your property when you first moved in? The little bit you showed in the June 20, 2017 video was very interesting to see a small glimpse of where you started as it looks completely different now. Thank you for all your inspiration and your motivation to get me going.
I have a BabyCakes dwarf blackberry and couldn’t figure out how to prune it to save my life (it fruits twice a year…just to be even more confusing), but this made total sense and now I know I have a ‘summer’ plant that just happens to fruit twice a year. Thank you! :)
You amaze me how you remember so much about so many different flowers, shrubs, vegetables, and trees. Kudos to your Mom and Dad! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! ☮️💖🙏🇺🇸🎇🇺🇦✝️🙌🤜
So excited to be watching your garden grow this season! Never heard of Fall Gold raspberries outside of your channel - excited to see you plant them and blackberries. :)
Woah! I Honestly had not idea about the raspberries growing this way! 🤯 always learning something new with Laura, I love it! Thank you for sharing! ❤️❤️

Yes. The berry canes have thorns.
Hi Donna I'm glad I'm not the only Aussie that stays up till 11pm at night to watch garden answer.
Any info on gloves? Are these the same ones Laura uses on thorny roses?
Hi Cheryl, yes I think they are, they were a red pair, not her usual pair.
Heritage red raspberries are thorness.
That's the best part of them.

Good morning Laura and everyone joining in. Do the raspberries that you have spread out everywhere, or will the stay in that row?
She's pruning them back quite a lot, they are in a raised bed, so they won't be spreading.
I was curious about that as well
They actually could over time. They will send out runners under the ground and can come up quite a ways away from the parent plant.
They can and will spread out. When Laura planted them last year, she said they would control them by removing any "runners" that escape their beds.
Yes, they sprout new ones all over in the bed. They multiply worse then rabbits. I always pull out the new ones and give them away.

Never a dull moment with Garden Answer - love your channel. I wake up to it every morning! ☕️🪴🇨🇦
Love these garden beds!
Good morning! 😊
Good morning!💜💛🤗🌺 thank you for the in depth information! Great video like always! 💜💛
This was informative. Our raspberries are ever bearing but I did cut them all to about 1’ in the fall as well as thinned them out.
Perfect timing! I planted raspberries late summer/early fall. They are Glencoes… it that what you said you are planting next? Nervous about 1st pruning but you make it sound like all’s good any way- just may affect # of berries
The next raspberries they will be planting are called Fall Golds 🤗 (i think they're a yellow raspberrie)
Thank you for this video! I was hoping you would do a raspberry pruning one.
I don’t even have raspberries but if it’s Laura ill watch it.
What great timing for a video on pruning raspberries! Iwas just wondering what to do with mine
I love watching your videos and seeing your enthusiasm and envying your energy. 😊❤️👍
Such great information!! Can’t wait to run to the garden center to get some raspberries!!
Laura, I would love to know how you made your Raspberry raised beds! They are beautiful!😍
Eddie built them, she has a video describing the process. In YT, just search Garden Answer berry beds.
@@sheilastromberger2275 Thank you!
Thanks guys!!
good moring
I watched several videos on this topic and you explain it best.
Is it not dangerous to plant blackberries near raspberries. I thought the later could transmit diseases to the former.

Great video, Laura. I have a blackberry bush. Would pruning that be the same as the raspberries? Thank you!
Would love to get an answer to this in the recap 😀
So excited to be watching your garden grow this season! Never heard of Fall Gold raspberries outside of your channel - excited to see you plant them and blackberries. :)
Best video for this topic I’ve seen
Woah! I Honestly had not idea about the raspberries growing this way! 🤯 always learning something new with Laura, I love it! Thank you for sharing! ❤️❤️
Enjoy these immensely! Where do you live that you can prune and plant. We still have piles of snow drifts and cold. I am from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
