Exploring An Abandoned Debenhams In Reading

  • This was a Debenhams shop in Reading which closed during the first half of 2020. The shop used to have 3 floors, but the top floor has been turned into a Home Furnishing shop. This was one of 2 large department stores in the Oracle Shopping Centre.
    You are able to walk around the top floor of the new shop, but the 2 floors below have been blocked off. The escalators down have been barriered off and they have put decorative wood around the escalators to stop you from seeing down there.
    The lifts are still operational and are only there so that you can access the Car Park floors above. The buttons to go down to the abandoned floors are locked off. However, being quite observant, I noticed that the lift on the left parks down on the bottom floor while not in use. That's how I got down there.
    I felt unsure that the lift would come back down again if I called it, so I left my bag in between the doors to stop the lift from leaving.
    While I was exploring the 1st floor, I noticed that there was someone working. That's why I ended the video. I don't think they noticed me though.

    Now this is very very interesting, well done for being observant! Do you go to The Oracle often? If this is a shopping centre you go to a lot, then I'm not surprised you noticed that the lifts park down there!

      They never used to park on the Ground Floor, they used to just stay where they left off. I guess they were messing around with the logic a lot as they were locking off the bottom floors. Only the one on the right will park on Ground, and the one on the left will also only ever answer your call if the other one is busy.
      It will also only park on Ground if the other one is busy. In order to get the one on the left to park on Ground, you must send the one on the right up to the Car Park. My guess as to why it does this is that while one lift is at the top, the other one goes down to efficiently answer any lower calls in case it receives any. It could just be a bug though, I'm not sure. The one on the right parks on the shop floor as it should.
      Hope you understand, but feel free to ask more.

    Why are LM and R labeled? Are they the old Debenhams labels?

    • @Lift.Tracker
      @Lift.Tracker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason for that is because during 2018, the shopping centre had a slight refurbishment. In the refurbishment, they changed all the floor numbering from letters to numbers. It used to be “R, LM, UM” but now it’s “0, 1, 2”. On all the main lifts, they replaced the button signs, but in the shop lifts they just put a sticker next to the old ones.
      The “R” stands for “Riverside”.

      It’s quite cool to see. It’s not entirely abandoned, more like unused, but it’s still good to take a look at. Getting the lift to go down there isn’t very straight forward though. You have to take advantage of a few software bugs in the lift logic to get it to do it. I’d be happy to help though if you want to try it. :-)
