I just noticed that I didn't mention the second part of the saw-handle finish. It's just shellac out of the can, applied with a rag and buffed with steel wool. 2 coats. I cover this in much more detail in my video on easy finishes. th-cam.com/video/JQA-EbQ2EGk/w-d-xo.html Sorry for any confusion!

Our father taught us to sharpen saws. Joint ,set, and sharpen. When done, place a needle on the teeth to see if it slides all the way to the toe. If not, start over.
If the needle fell off, the set was off and the saw would not track straight.
Lord help you if a bent/warped blade went unnoticed before sharpening.

It's worth it. Many years ago I wanted to practice making a handle and I had some scrap cherry and no money. I replaced the plastic handle on a cheap Stanley miter box saw. Over the years I refiled it to a rip cut and I still use it to cut tenons. I didn't do a very good job on the handle but it looks decent and has lasted 15 - 20 years. I'm going to make another one for that saw and (hopefully) do a better job.

I think what originally pulled me in to your channel was your videos on planing. I think what I liked about those videos was that you were introducing us...me to a new tool. I had seen planes before. I have a couple of my dad's old planes, but I had never used one and honestly I guess I didn't really see the value in them. But you introduced these tools and showed the value and how beautiful the results could be using a plane on a piece of wood. For me, it was the introduction and demonstration of a new tool that I found fascinating. Restoration is certainly cool and making tools is fun, but discovering new tools that add new value and extra layers of detail to your work and make your work more unique. . .if my comments have any sway, that's the track I'd like to see you pursue. Great show! Keep up the great work. I'll probably continue to watch whichever track you follow.

Many years ago, I would spend time with my grandfather in his garden-shed workshop. He was a cabinet maker by trade, but after WWII he spent most of his time working in Southampton Docks, UK. He taught me all about the tools, techniques and technicalities of cabinetry.
Moving along many years, my grandfather has passed, and I find myself going more back to woodworking. Your content, and passion, have reignited my enjoyment for wood, tools, and just being in a workshop. Currently, I'm going through all your past content, making notes, and remembering things my grandad said.

Hi Rex. Since my dad was a finish carpenter (joiner) for 40+ years, and I inherited some (precious few) of his hand tools, the vintage stuff holds a special place in my smallish, black heart. By viewing your ( and some other) restoration videos, I've brought his Stanley #5 and 9-1/4 planes back to optimum performance. I then bought additional vintage planes (mostly on eBay) and restored them. Next I'm tackling his panel saws... There are 4 of them, 3 cross and one rip. I've not yet researched them, but, as my dad always bought the best tools he could afford, I have no doubt that they are quality saws. They've been languishing for years, but this video has given me the motivation to get started on them. I hope you realize that your content inspires so many of us to do things we'd never have considered before. So, PLEASE keep up the excellent work, an by all means, more restoration video's!

I enjoy your presentations and appreciate your willingness to reach a broader section of your viewers.
To answer your request, yes I would like to see more detailed videos of tool restoration. I would also like to see your demonstration of the differences of making tools serviceable, refurbishing a tool, and restoring a tool to museum quality.
It's heartbreaking to see high quality state of the art tools of yesteryear that have fallen out if favor, neglected, abused, and discarded.
We all have a sense of history and know that our technology achievements stand on the shoulders of craftsmen who went before us. Technology is the "knowledge of technique" and becoming a craftsman takes more than putting in the time. It means respecting the art , the tool, the technique , and the history.
I am a retired shop teacher. You are very good teacher and craftsman.
In my second year of teaching a wise older teacher reminded me of this : he said, " You're not just teaching woodworking, you're teaching people." I have done the same thing. Just a quick tip for everyone. Go over too Craigslist and head over too the tool category section every once in a while. I have gotten awesome deals on craigslist for vintage tools. I found a beautiful #4 craftsmen hand plane that I bought for 20 bucks from the original owner it even came with the original box he purchased it in. I also have found some bit and brace drills a really nice large vintage steel tool box and several other things. I found all of these on craigslist most for almost nothing. Also I live in a medium to small sized city west of Detroit Michigan by about an hour and a half, my city is Grand Rapids Michigan. So if any of you live in or are near a larger city than you probably will have an even easier time finding vintage tools than I do. My last tip is don't over look your neighborhood thrift store I have 2 vintage hand saws from mine. The money you spend is almost nothing but what you do spend goes too a good cause like bibles for Missionaries and many others.

Tool restoration is a great way to connect with artisans from the past. We can learn so much from individually made or specified tools - my grandfather had a couple of tool chests crammed with tools he’d made for specific jobs and he used to tell me how they come about and when he made them. I was 30 when he died and as I lived a few hundred miles away didn’t get involved in his workshop clear out. All his tools were either given away or scrapped without me knowing. Saddest day of my life, no one realised how much they meant to me, not one survived. He marked his tools with his initials DRW and I always look whenever I come across old carpenter’s or metalworker’s tools to see if they are any still around. So yes, it’s important, to me anyway, that people renovate, repair and use these historical artefacts cause if they could talk, they might tell you about their old master and his young apprentice and the little jobs they accomplished together.

Absolutely... tools refurb is HUGE. Restoring the tools men depended on to make a living and feed their families deserve to be preserved and USED whenever possible. I do it all the time. These Craftsmen depended on these instruments. Most were well made and their owners took care to preserve and keep them in precise working order. At times, once I complete a really nice hammer or the like, I’ll put it through its paces. Certain tools just “talk” to you. Don’t think I’m crazy, but when you know you did right by the tool, it just has a certain and extremely satisfying ring and feel to it. Seems like it’s almost trying to thank you...

Please continue with more tool restoration. I love old tools of all kinds and would rather buy old than new and as you say much of the time they need ‘work’

Rex I have received many old hand tools from my Grandfather's estate and my Fiance's grandfather who cleaned out his basement. Your tool restoration videos are immensely helpful for me as I want to restore my grandfather's old tools and actually get woodworking again. Your channel is honestly one of the best woodworking channels I subscribe to as you get it, you know what it's like to not have money to spend on tools and make great videos for people like me who have old tools, time, and not very much money. I would love to see an even mix of woodworking for humans and restoration videos.

I like the mix. Old, new, creative... one idea that is currently on my mind is handles for tools. Selecting the right wood, or rather not so common species that are suitable and plentiful, and then properly creating and installing the handle is a current need.

I value vintage tools. I inherited a wood block plane made by my grandfather along with his hand crosscut saw and a brace a bit bit. After watching this video I can see what I can do to restore his saw. Thanks

This disabled viewer watches this to keep the dream alive of maybe someday taking up woodworking in spite of shoestring budget and Chronic Fatigue. But restoring old tools is honestly at the bottom of the list of reasons I watch this channel. Rather the tips for getting projects done affordably and the can-do mindset of, "even a beginner can dive into this simple project," is what I watch this for. But my advise is to focus on what YOU enjoy most regardless of the audience feedback. Those who share your passion will find you and appreciate your sharing.

It doesn't take much to start woodworking. A saw, a chisel, a square, a pencil and you've pretty much got it then. Not to say that you can't use more tools. But you can get it done with just that. This is coming from a guy that never saw a plane that he didn't like. So I took most of them home with me too.

@@1pcfred Bless you for your kind reply. And gotta love the hidden pun. "Did you hear what the toy maker said of the wooden jets he'd make with just two tools? He never saw a plane he didn't like."

@@propertystuff7221 your comment struck a chord with me too. If you're on a shoestring budget then restoring tools is the more budget conscious choice. Although this year isn't the year for it. I can't tell folks to just go out there and get it now. Because we can't.

Perfect timing! Given the gift of free time, I am planning to unpack the many tools inherited from my father. At 65 now, I took a different path as did my father, but both my grandfather and great grandfather were contractors. Growing up in an 1812 timber framed house gave my father and me plenty of opportunities to develop and “hone” our woodworking skills together. He has been gone now for 15 years and the house for 5, but you have given me incentive to finally open that old crate of hand tools. Thank You!

I love it. i'm in a building in appliance park that gives me the opportunity to dabble in a lot of projects. so it started out with hand tools from the flea market now its workbenches (your beginner bench i'm modifying) made out of some 100 year old lumber that was given to me. i'm a beginner, and let me tell you getting that wood true wasnt something i'll ever do again! i have 2 handsaws i found that are as old as me. i have one tore down and clamped to my desk as i type! thank you rex. youve steered me in a direction i would have never went

Yes please, I'm all about the vintage tool restoration, I'm fairly new to hand tool woodworking but have acquired quite a collection planes, router planes, spoke shaves and a bunch of hand saws of all types, a saw vise would be particularly helpful but any restoration videos would be greatly appreciated

I found your channel through the restorations, and stayed because I am trying to start my own little workshop as I can. I don't have a lot of money and your videos really help. Sorry for rambling, but I guess short and sweet is keep doing both. I enjoy both types of videos.

I'm one of those people who've written you e-mails saying I couldn't find old tools. I went to the biggest flea market around me and I found one really badly pitted bit brace that they wanted $15 for. When this quarantine is over I think I'm going to drive up to PA to look. I think here in West Virginia people just know that stuff is valuable so it doesn't last long.

Yes to restoration and homebmade saw sharpening vice and other tools to service the saws. I have 7 or 8 old saws that need restoration and sharpening.
With the advice and instructions you gave us on setting up a plane and sharpening them I now find the plane being the first tool I reach for to quickly prepare a piece of stock for a small job. If the saw instructions are as good as the plane instructions I'll have an awesome set of saws to go along with my 7 planes.
I didn't realize how much I love my old tools until you helped me understand them better.
Thanks for everything you do Rex.👍🏼💪🏻
