- Poppy (Sally Hawkins) is an irrepressibly cheerful primary school teacher who won't let anyone or anything get her down. Even when her bicycle, which she so happily rides through the busy streets of London is stolen, her first thought is only: "I didn't even get a chance to say goodbye."
Living with her flatmate Zoe (Alexis Zegerman), Poppy has a gift for making the most of life. Determined to learn to drive, she finds herself matched with Scott (Eddie Marsan), an uptight driving instructor who is everything she is not.

I agree!!!! Poppy is not portrayed as a dummy. She's a teacher who is kind and intuitive enough to recognize when others are hurting and actually give a shit. If that makes her "annoying", then so be it. I'd rather be annoyingly positive than like the driving instructor.
I laugh.. and laugh.. and laugh... a very nice movie!!! I would see it again!!
this is the best film ive ever seen, my ultimate favourite, because i totally cannot believe poppy isnt a real person!
i have NEVER experienced that in a film before lol, mike leigh and sally phillips are obviously a winning combination for an AMAZING film!
A lovely film that's grown on me immensely after repeat viewings. Mike Leigh is one of the best filmmakers working today.
This is a fantasy film on a micro budget. Only Mike Leigh could pull that one off. This is 'Pan's Labyrinth' without the fancy effects. "The Road to Reality? Don't want to be going there".

really good movie. Got to be a success if it's reaping a 'hate Poppy' attitude. The fact that you either LOVE her or HATE her indicates a job well done here. We all know people like her in life and have the same attitude towards them, eh?
A friend of mine attended me to this film yesterday. He said the film is about me, that I should get the credits for using my life for this film. lol Can't wait to see it.

Sally Hawkins' accent is not in any way annoying. It is endearing and she is beautiful and ultra-real in this film.

Poppy's personality is POSITIVELY lovely!
I mean, the opening scene for her is darling. "I like your hat!" She says to the cashier while looking through a bookstore and then going outside to find that her bike is stolen, but responds with a carefree smile, "Oh NO! :) It's didn't even say good-bye!"
After that, I knew it was going to be a fabulous movie :D

This movie struck me as the English Amelie (in a way). It's much earthier, but its love-of-life message is similar. I was very impressed with how the main character, Poppy, wrestles with her happiness when she sees how it brings up other people's pain. A deep film for all its superficial fluff. I loved it.

I watched it last night too by mistake,and what a mistake. Some people are actually like Poppy and just don't know when to stop.(for me) the question in this film is...who is worse? Poppy for being constantly optimistic or cynical people? Unfortunatley in this world, its the latter. Everyone is different and it just shows how intolerable this world can be to people who are happy :D

There really isn't music of an overall plot. It's mostly just a series of vignettes, and you either buy into it or you don't. I personally loved it (it was my favorite film of last year), but I know quite a few people found the character of Poppy and the general lack of plot to be extremely aggravating.

I agree. It's a great film. It's a lil obscure rightnow, but I think it's bound to be the feel-good indie film of the year, like "Juno" or "Garden State." And I'm sure Hawkins will get some Oscar buzz
I wouldn't call my self a happy-go-lucky person and I enjoyed this. Even with the lack of a plot , I enjoyed the ideal of someone having over-the-top optimism like this. I also like how the filmaker played with the viewers biases by introducing Poppy without telling you what she did, when I saw it for the first time I thought her chracter was going to just be a ne'er-do-well until the movie went along, a pretty cool twist I thought.

thats the point! At least that's the way I saw it. I think she is pretending to be much dumber then she actually is. It's only at the scene with the bum that she shows a bit of her "true" self. And later on with Scott. But otherwise... why do you think she surrounds herself with kids? To keep herself as a child too.

i actually felt really sad near the end, when after pulling poppy's hair and everything, scott said something like "same time again next week/sunday?" then she goes no.. heartbreaking :/
