    Considering a move in the coming months. I’m a remote worker with the freedom to move wherever. Drove through the Wheeling area on my way to scope out Pittsburgh and ended up falling in love with the options and beauty in WV instead. I was not expecting that! As a Tennessean, Pittsburgh was a bit too “North” for me. WV gave me that familiar Appalachian warmth that E. TN used to have before the mass influx.

    • @movingtovawv
      @movingtovawv  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s awesome Justin! One thing I strongly recommend is making sure you do your due diligence on internet connectivity if you end up searching for a rental in WV. It can go either way at the end of the day- I’ve seen rural mountain homes with over 250 mbsp/ down and then homes you’d think would be 🚀 ships turn out to have horribly slow internet speeds.
      I hear you on Tennessee! I was looking there 5-6 years ago and it’s a completely different scene nowadays. Pittsburgh definitely has a different culture on average. Doesn’t feel as warm and friendly your average day out and about.

      Every decent place is seeing the "mass influx". Problem is its citiots moving to and killing these areas. They hate what they created and move on to do it again in somebody else's nice area. Never learning.

    I am a middle Tennessean (about 1 hour North of Nashville) and my home just isn't the same. We are being priced out of our own state due to the influx of people moving in. Living in a neighboring state where the utility costs and real estate taxes have steeply and the small increase in social security doesn't even begin to cover. Crime keeps going up and no longer feel safe going out at night. Important is that WV is no longer taxing social security so that's a huge motivator for retirees on a limited income. Thanks for the video.

    As a native WVian living overseas for 15 years, every time I go back there's one thing that blows my mind and not in a good way: boil water advisories. In Beckley they're a dime a dozen and half the time they forget or just flat out fail to tell you about them. That's something I feel people should know. Granted it's not every area but in the south it's bad.

    Thanks, Rex. We've owned residential property here, in the Eastern Panhandle, since 1986. Lived here for 27 out of the 37 years. We really like the State and many of our neighbors. Of course it's WV, so the unlikeable neighbors aren't close enough to worry about. I would encourage anyone interested in a non-DC paced lifestyle to look out here. With the lower taxes, sometimes changing your base is a viable thought.

    • @movingtovawv
      @movingtovawv  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a great point on the "close enough" part. The average home in West Virginia has WAY more space between the neighbors than in Virginia. It's possible in Virginia of course, but generally you'd be paying a lot more for the privacy

      Our home is mostly natural gas, oven/stove, hot water heater, furnace and clothes dryer. We pay the budget plan every month. Our natural gas bill has been $99 a month for 2 years. Our electric co,es from Mon Power our electric bill when we don’t use central air is $35 to $45 a month. Our highest electric bill this past summer with the central air was $78. We live in the country so we have a septic tank but do have city water. It averages $30 a month. Trash pick up is $55 for 3 months.
      Our property taxes on a 1500 sq foot home with 5 3/4 acres is $1000 a year. WV is a very affordable place to live if you stay within your means and don’t try keeping up with the Joneses everyday. WV does have personal property taxes but starting Jan 1 2024 those have basically been eliminated. You will still pay them every year but when you file taxes in 2025 you will get a 100% rebate. They chose to handle it this way because county school systems and county government uses the personal property tax for funding. The county still gets the money but the state government will give it back to the tax payer. Last legislative session they also cut the income tax rate. As long as revenue produces surpluses income tax is scheduled to be cut more yearly.

My wife and I are born and raised Florida people, lol But as of yesterday after I had gotten home and opened our mail. Our homeowners insurance went up over $2000 a year! Yes, for a total of $3900. My wife’s dream home was shattered. We were thinking moving north when retirement came. But it maybe closer than we think. My question is, I know medical is not the best there. How is the Social Security disability retirement system there? I am not there yet. But I am getting closer because of my law enforcement days.

      Hey Robert! That's a pretty serious hike. Our property taxes here in Winchester Virginia just went up a good bit too... one of many reasons I'm just a year or two out from making the switch across statelines myself. We're actually going to be putting out a video in the next day or two about retiring in WV. WV did stop taxing Social Security benefits in 2022. We talk about this in the next video and a couple other things.

      Actually, WVU medicine is highly regarded nationwide. The Parkersburg Campus alone is ranked in the top 100 in pulmonary care. The Mid Ohio valley, which includes Marietta Ohio as well as Parkersburg WV, is saturated with specialized satellite Healthcare facilities. WVU medicine and Memorial Healthcare are in competition with each other. In some areas, they have built facilities across the street from each other. It has been rumored another nationally recognized Healthcare provider is interested in Memorial Healthcare.

      @franciscofranco5739 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I moved to Morgantown a couple of years ago from the West. It has its pros and cons depending on where you’re from. The low taxes are great and low cost utilities are great, but with the low taxes comes poor infrastructure and lack of public services. Gas is also pretty cheap (at least compared to where I lived before), but you will be driving a lot depending on where you live. Also services in general are pretty bad, if you ever need work done on your property it can be hard to find professionals. Also, you will be in a food desert, so it can be challenging to find quality produce and the restaurants are abysmal; At least Pittsburgh is about an hour away for better quality groceries (ie Costco). Medical care also is a bit mixed, WVU has decent medical care but the system is very bloated due to WVU being the largest employer in the county (I think even the state). Drugs, substance abuse and poverty are likewise an issue but not as apparent in some areas, but you will never have to venture far to find it. Downtown Morgantown is pretty crap as well, you most likely wont be spending any significant amount of time there unless you’re a college student or vagrant.

    no work doesnt matter if you retire there as I plan to...there are things you MUST know,the biggest is if you buy property make sure you will own the mineral rights,if you dont some oil or coal co can dig up your property!
    when I did live there,the only things as expensive as here in ct were gas and milk...groceries were very cheap...
    some homes come with "free gas"that means theres a gas well,and you get free gas till it runs out in 500 yrs...

    • @David-um2hs
      @David-um2hs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Virtually all mineral rights in West Virginia are owned by very large corporations headquartered in places like New York. Most of these mineral rights were purchased over one hundred years ago. The possibility of an individual or a small or even a mid size corporation being able to buy mineral rights is basically a non starter. Even if an individual or small company owned mineral rights the cost of developing resources would be out of reach. However, these huge companies cannot run roughshod over landowners should they want to develop the companies mineral rights. Small landowners do have protections. There is plenty of information about mineral rights on the net.

A little about me: I've lived in most major cities, I am a Licensed Massage Therapist for the past 5 years, and I LOVE nature and want to live somewhere where there are more trees than people. I'm over cities. I am considering Real Estate in West Virginia, or opening my own Massage boutique.

      Race is a big thing in large cities. Think New York, Philly, Atlanta. It is not a big thing in West Virginia. For the most part you will be judged by your character here. Best place for a massage therapy business? I would say anyplace with a decent sized population base. Anyplace between Huntington and Charleston. Beckley or Princeton in the southern part of the state. Parkersburg on the Ohio river. From Morgantown to Clarksburg in the northern part of the state. And lastly somewhere in the eastern panhandle. Of these the best for enjoying nature would be number 2, 4 and 5 respectively.

      The speed limits on the in-town roads are too fast. I have seen a very abnormal amount of car accidents in this state in the 2 weeks I have lived here.
      I use caution when going around blind curves, but the speed limit is 55 (which is insane) and the locals are tailgaiting me, honking and flipping me the bird.
      On the interstate, I try to maintain a speed of 75 mph, sometimes 72.
      I catch up to cars who are going around 65 mph and they drastically speed up if I try to pass them, they will go 90 plus mph just to make sure I can't pass, and then they will slow down next to a semi to block me from passing.
      The roads are garbage. Massive potholes everywhere. I had to wait an hour for a tow truck to pull out a van that crashed into the "ditch" when the road crumbled out from underneath it.
      There are more slum neighborhoods in this state than I have seen in the ghettos of Chicago and Dallas.
      The people in and near Charleston are malnourished, lots are homeless, and the drugs are a major problem. I can't take my kids anywhere fun (bowling, skating) as a result.
      Rain and tornadoes in the two weeks I have been here.
      The schools do not allow religious exemptions from vaccines.
      The locals are downright hostile. Worst road rage I have ever seen, and I used to be an OTR truck driver and I still drive truck, just not across the country anymore.
      We have been told more than once by other drivers to "go back to Iowa"
      Yesterday while going home from New River Gorge, I moved off the road to allow a road raging tailgater get around me, and instead of a friendly wave, he gave me the finger.
      There is an unacceptable amount of litter on the side of many roads.
      Yards and hills are home to old, junk appliances (water heaters, washers, dryers, stoves, refrigerators, etc.). That should be absolutely embarrassing to the locals, but they're totally chill with it.

    This is in complete contradiction to your video of five reasons not to move to WV. You literally just said health care was a developing industry. In your other video you named it as one of the major downsides to life in WV. You say several broadband companies provide great internet connection - but in your other video, you say the opposite. Make up your mind and stick with it. You can’t name things as bad in one video then try to flip in the next and name them as positives. Or, make one combined video where you say health care is a challenge, but there is cause for optimism because it is developing.

    • @movingtovawv
      @movingtovawv  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching!
      Complete contradiction? Not sure you watched the same video
      So when you say “you can’t name things as bad in one video then try to flip in the next…” There is nuance to different topics. Yes, as we have said, West Virginia has statistically and historically had issues with their healthcare system. And at the same time it’s making great strides forward... developing
      Which video do I say the opposite regarding internet connection?
      Do you live in West Virginia?

    • @SJ47668
      @SJ47668 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@movingtovawv I am giving serious consideration to moving there this year. The video you mention internet connectivity and cause for concern regarding healthcare is “Avoid moving to West Virginia…”
      At 2:57 you say “it’s a real concern for people with chronic health conditions to live in a place with poor ranking in healthcare “. “Additionally, the state has a shortage in health professionals…more than half the state’s population live in a primary care health professional shortage area…this means many residents face long wait times and limited access to essential healthcare services which can lead to delayed care and poor health outcomes”.
      At 8:12 you say “furthermore, the states broadband access ranks amongst the lowest in the country making it difficult for businesses to operate and residents to stay connected in today’s digital world. I know people who’ve struggled to find good internet service which is a real challenge when you’re trying to work from home or stay connected to loved ones”.

    • @movingtovawv
      @movingtovawv  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@SJ47668 Sure, I can see how it might feel like we are "playing both sides," but there isn't an actual contradiction here. In this video, at 1:54 I simply stated that Health Care is cheaper than the national average. There's no comment to the quality or overall accessibility of healthcare in this video as the one you just cited... the other video does give it the national ranking according to one source. Those two statements are not mutually exclusive.
      Regarding Broadband, in this video, I state "West Virginia is a great place to live for remote workers the state has a number of broadband internet providers so residents can easily connect to work from home." This is also a valid statement and it is prefaced with "I've had a lot of clients who switched to part or full remote work these last two years and they decided it's high time to escape the expensive cities and live in a state that lets them enjoy life without the higher bills one typically fines in Metro areas like Northern Virginia." In this context, it means there are options for those who want to move to WV and have access to internet for work. I'd understand it to be contradictory if I said, "Every single city in West Virginia has great internet if you want to work from home." In the other video, where you have cited broadband, it's another item to consider. I think it's important to realize that we are speaking in averages, which allows people to be cognizant of items that we have personally seen become pain points or at least just cause for concern to our relocation clients. I think it's clear that we're painting a consistent truth for many: one of the big pros of moving to WV is lower cost of living combined with the ability to work remotely. That's a common motif in the stories of many who have relocated to West Virginia since major shifts in society's work life.
      I had a client who was moving here from Florida last summer, and she loved a chalet-style home in Gore Virginia near the West Virginia border. I knew she had to have solid internet for her remote work, so when on site, we tested the internet connection, researched the list of companies, spoke to neighbors I had helped previously, and determined it would be fine for her... All that to say, I think it's rather sensible that if you were to move to West Virginia, you'd want to do research on specific areas in regard to healthcare access, internet connectivity, or anything else that is important to you specifically. The videos are on the broader topics pros and cons of a massive state. We try to paint an overall picture of pros and cons in a ten-minute video. It's not a substitute for an actual conversation with people who know the areas and have connections here or doing proper research. When it comes down to actually picking an area that works for your set of priorities, that's when leaning into local knowledge can be extremely valuable, and that's something we try to focus more on when creating city-specific videos like our recent one on Strasburg Virginia. Hopefully this clears things up a bit! Again, thanks for watching and genuinely appreciate the feedback as well. I think we'll try harder to explain these items in further detail so people like yourself do not feel misled by the information. I can see where our presentation structuring could use some polishing. So thank you for bringing light to that for us.

    The internet is still terrible. The health care system is still terrible. The biggest reason I decided not to start my business in WV is because the theme seems to be "Historical preservation", when it should be "Rapid change". The dead coal industry and old architecture aren't going to revitalize WV. To me, personally, I would like to see rapid growth to turn around the stagnant horseshit plaguing this region, and I don't care about the history. Maybe I'm an asshole but just visit WV and you'll see a huge problem that can be fixed easily, but the reason it isn't fixed is because of old thinking. They should legalize Marijuana (and welcome the booming industry) while simultaneously eliminating the other real drug problems (meth, opioids, etc), give all of the old problematic residents a check and the boot (with a fair chance to become progressive citizens, instead of burdens, or the boot if they cannot change), and take the tax money from weed sales to tear down the old and lease out the spaces to new people and new businesses.
