Sarkodie on German Officer Telling Him "All Africans are Poor" (Part 3)

  • Part 4: • Sarkodie on 'Adonai' f...
Part 2: • Sarkodie on Akon Telli...
Part 1: • Sarkodie on His Ashant...
    --------
Sarkodie didn't notice much racism growing up, due to his self-confidence. However, he described a racist encounter with an immigration officer while attempting to enter Germany with an Italian visa. Sarkodie was visiting his family and confirmed with the immigration officer that entering the country with an Italian visa wasn't illegal, but the officer made a remark about Africans being poor before questioning how Sarkodie would take care of himself. Sarkodie said the encounter made him more aware of racism from that moment on.
The rapper also detailed his rise as an artist. Sarkodie described coming in the battle scene and winning a major rap competition that got him noticed by fans and producers. Building off of reputation as a battle rapper and his online follower, Sarkodie released his first album in 2009 which made him a household name in his native country. Sarkodie also talked about rapping primarily in his native language and how he's able to connect with listeners even if they don't understand what he's saying.

I'm from America, and as an American, if I was to hear someone speaking Wolof, and another guy speaking Twi, I would be able to easily differentiate the two languages as not being the same. At the end of the day we r all black so it don’t matter who started it becuz if u want to get technical hip hop is a branch off of funk, disco, electronic, r&b and other styles of music that black Americans started. We all as a whole have an influence on the hip hop culture whether ur Jamaican or Black American and as far as I’m concerned if u were born in America as a black man ur Black American, how can u claim another country and u weren’t even born there. Ur parents my be from Jamaica or Trinidad & Tobago but the generations after that were born in NYC or whatever American city ur from. We r all descendants from the African ppl anyway lol

Then he dropped “Borga, Borga” which also had a crazy beat and video. The US Hip-Hop elements in Ghana’s hiphop songs were there at this time. Left Ghana in 2010 so anything else I wouldn’t know after that.
