I grew up in Peralta until I was ten years old. The nearest doctor was in Los Lunas but nobody in our area could afford to pay a doctor. All us kids were taken to see the curandera. She was only known as Malá. Nothing was known about her and nobody spoke of her in general conversation. The windows of her small adobe home were completely blacked out, and there were no lights inside. There were candles everywhere and when you entered, the olfactory senses were overwhelmed with a maddening array of scents all at once. There were pots of stuff simmering on the wood stove. Malá would rub us down with any combination of leaves, salves, oils and such, and we would be forced to swallow some acrid concoctions, and all the while Malá would be chanting and moaning. It was very scary being in there and once you got out, you felt great only because you were overjoyed to be out of there!

My parents had a real fear of Indians. Witches, demons, devils were something that was talked about often.
My people perish for a lack of knowledge.
