the wacky marine adventures of helmeppo and koby could be it's own manga. you could imagine seeing them skyrocket in potential under the guidance of an eccentric mentor past their prime, make new friends and reunite with old ones, and having crushing defeats any time they encounter luffy. watch them come to realize the system they're fighting for is unjust and be inducted into SWORD, see them at the rockyport incident as heroes for the world to see and as calm and reasonable people during the clash between hancock and blackbeard on amazon lily, etc. seriously, if oda wanted to, he could do marine piece and just do the story over from koby's perspective.
According to Vol29 SBS, Helmeppo may already outrank his father. Morgan's rank was a Branch rank which is apparently about three ranks lower than the equivalent in HQ ranks. This makes current Helmeppo one rank over his father.
I've always loved Oda's ability to introduce characters that we hate and eventually make them really likeable, but I've never stopped to think about how it literally all started with Helmeppo. The man's writing really is something else. Edit: not all characters have become likeable yet
You were not lying when you said Helmeppo would become one of my favorite characters because very quickly he has. He 100% has flown under my radar for far too long and now I can appreciate him way more!
I think OP is a great example of Character development. I know a lot of people complain about how the Strawhats never have fun moments together anymore or laugh or whatever…. But I think it’s only normal when one grows up. Not saying they became “boring” but more mature. Before they didn’t think about consequences etc but after Marineford and the Time skip, they realised and naturally wouldn’t behave so extremely childish.. although I DO think they still possess their youthful character.. just more mature..
Not just that. They have set goals now and that's what they aim for. Earlier they had to stay at random islands waiting for the log pose to adjust, that gave the strawhats time for shenanigans. Even in arcs like Skypea they initially just went there because the log pose said so, Enel came later.
Morgan and Koby both being captains still makes me laugh, one is a user of Observation and Armament Haki with training in Rokushiki. And the other guy is best known for having an axe for a hand
hahaha...Morgan Axehand. Morgan Blackhand. Theres an ironic connection to Cyberpunk lore here that never occurred to me until you said that. One piece, while being impossible to catch up on in a reasonable amount of time without skipping over things, is a very well written tale.
I was thinking that aswell, but i guess there is a difference in power levels for marines on the grand line and on the south blue, really strong marines wont stay in any of the blues independent of ranking
for me helmeppos visor is what stands out the most, dare I say Iconic for him. Its like that piece that brings everything together, his outfit is smooth, but that visor brings it all together.
Great design of a character usually involves the classic heroes tale story archetype. Most beloved anti-heroes follow this archetype as well and is very much so a Shonen-esque style of character development. Vegeta is a very classic example of this.
Who said he wasn't already. The fact that he is is the greatest secret the Gorosei hold tighter than the existence of Im. Hail to our lord and savior, Condoriano!
This needs to happen. It even can make sense. Special inspector Sheppard becomes so mentally damaged from people thinking he is condoriano that he eventually takes on the person's as truth.. the Marines now realizing he really is Sheppard tries to get him help. But condoriano refuses to believe he was a marine and leaves them. His self belief and inherited will from usopps story makes condoriano train really hard and become a badass ally that saves luffy and usopps life.
Wow, thanks for making a video on Helmeppo. I've always been really impressed by the level of character development he has. He's a pretty underrated side character so I'm glad he's one of your faves!
And during Egghead island, Helmeppo was breaking down in tears crying after what happened to Koby as he shows his helplessness to beg any marine to save his Best friend from being Blackbeard’s captive which indicates how much Helmeppo is as a human being. This is what I like for him as he will get a redemption arc.
A theme that seems to go through all the admirals is that each has a type of personal justice. I think Helmeppos type of justice could be "redeeming justice" or something on that line.

Helmeppo embodies everything I love about One Piece. Like it was said in the video, in 99,9% of all other stories, he would have been a throw off one time villain or remained a comic relief character. But One Piece has a living breathing world outside of the strawhats and characters live on and go on their own wacky adventures and grow. Seeing the panel 2 chapters ago where Garp was like "get in losers, we're gonna kick some emperor ass and save your friend" was very heartwarming.
You know it would be cool to see that Morgan had joined up with the black beard pirates (probably from them saving him from being stuck in the ocean on a rowboat for all of eternity). That would lead to helmeppo confronting and perhaps putting his father in his place.
I'm so glad you made this video Liam! Helmeppo has been one of my favourite characters ever since him and Coby started training under Garp, I'm just so proud of him, he managed to change his entire moral compass, and be able to stand up for that morality, I really hope by the end of the series he does get to take on Morgan, that dude deserves another beating >.>
Helmeppo's story really is well done, and his transformation throughout the series really does make him one of the great characters of One Piece. Appreciate the video!
Thousands of episodes, hundreds of characters, and one that a lot of fans probably thought would fall through the cracks of such a huge story.... It's easy to imagine that any character with a major character transformation and either haki or a devilfruit could become a major power player near the end of the story. I just hope nothing tragic happens after all that stellar writing!
I wouldn’t doubt it if oda gave him a major role in the final arc. I wouldn’t put it past him. He wouldn’t invest this in time and growth on him for no reason.
I mean, it wouldn't be too out of place for a character introduced practically at the beginning of the series to be present for the finale, after all lol.

It’s worth noting that Sengoku didn’t need all of that force just for Whitebeard - he knew (or at least suspected) he was going to contend with the full might of not just Whitebeard’s fleet but a bunch of allied fleets as well. On the other hand, I wouldn’t be surprised if Garp knew Blackbeard had just been dealing with Law and thus would not be at full strength, and if *his* allied fleets are on the level of Peachbeard, they may not be a relevant part of the equation.
Helmeppo has always been on my top of favorite characters after the cover story, as well as Bellamy and Corazon, gawd, Oda writes incredible characters
while I think it will go differently, its funny to think of and a very real possibility that the attack on Blackbeard will be remembered like the god valley incident where the hero of the marines and a young upstart marine take down an emperor to save a fellow marine. Could also lead to big changes in the morale of the marines, potentially furthering the goal of aword
Imagine writing such an amazing story that even the bratty kid with daddy issues that's just a forgettable nuisance at the beginning of the show, ends up having an amazing character evolution
Just a reminder, you need a super human body in order to learn the Six Powers techniques. A minimum douriki level of 500 is required for it, and the average marine was estimated to have around 10. That is a massive power boost for Helmeppo by the time he reappears in the series.
Always liked Helmeppo quite a bit since he was redeemed with coby and came back in post enies lobby/rtw7, hope we actually get to see him put in work in a fight sometime in the series… and if that’s against Blackbeard look Helmeppo I’m here for it but we’ll have to see how it goes down.
The amount of time that passes from the time luffy meets zoro to just prior to the time skip is several months… put simply it takes days or weeks just to sail from island to island; and the log pose needs time to find the next island. it’s vague just how much time actually passes, but it’s been around 3 years total from the first episode with helmeppo to current manga events. This is widely debated amongst the community, but it’s largely accepted to have been several months(9 months or less).
Isn’t it more difficult to rise in the ranks in the Grand Line navy than in the East blue? Pretty sure Morgan had no haki whatsoever yet advanced to captain, while Helmeppo the haki-user has yet to do so.
After the whole Hachinosu thing, not only did Helmeppo take a CANNON for Koby, he survived the battle and caught his best friend as he fell from the sky. What a boss.
Smoker was just doing his job and following the law he was ordered to abide by more so than Akainu, so if you’re saying you despise Smoker then you should despise Akainu as much if not more than Smoker.
imagine instead of just garp, Luffy pulls up to blackbeards island with garp and fights along as coby was his marine best friend. representing the same fight of Gol D. Roger and Garp vs Rocks D. Xebec
If I time traveled to the time when my younger self was first reading one piece and told myself that helmeppo would go on to be one of my favorite characters of one piece, I wouldn't have believed myself, and thought I was half mad.
I think the Goggles/Glasses Helmeppo wears is just a way for ODA to get us to not look at his MASSIVE chin, but focus more on his eyes/face to give him less of comedic character vibe.
Helmeppo crying because Corby almost died at Marineford was my personal redeeming moment for this former brat. Also, the hammergun was probably the very best of 4Kids censorship. And it looked like i censored it myself with microsoft paint.
Your line on, helmepo is the zoro to cobby’s luffy. Then when and if they fight. I imagine zoro opens his eye to expose his power. Helmepo laughs, luffy joins in in the laugher. Zoro yells, hey what’s so funny. Helmepo removes the visor covering his eyes to show he has two of them. That’s why garp only needs helmepo.
The fact that it took them a month to declare war on the WG makes no sense to me, I could understand if it was four to six months, meaning the treath of this "straw hat pirate" was rising and people started to hear about him and suddenly wow he is a big pirate. Then after 6 to 9 months of travel, they get separated and all that. It's crazy to think that they have spent more time training and being away from eachother than together since the start of all this.
The most convincing part of this video was that the 1% that was good about selfish helmeppo resulted in 100% redemption when the 1% was put next to his chin.
Hey Liam, i hope you see this, i really like these videos where you talk about something that's not discussed much within the fandom, like the video about rayleigh, or the mihawk sword theory. I find them to be really entertaining, even more than chapter reviews
Why do I feel like Morgan is apart of Blackbeard's crew? Because that's my theory about most of the East blue villains, that him, Arlong, Kuro, and Don Krieg are apart of Blackbeard's crew.
Yeah, Sengoku did say that when he needs to face an emperor Which is also implied by HQ vice admirals conference and gorosei. Since Sengoku didn't know WB was already dead sick, he was very correct with that statement.
Garp realized how badly he screwed up with ace and luffy, so he tries to make up for it with helmeppo and koby. And just like ace at marineford he’s not going to lose one of his grandsons ever again.

You made me a huge helempo fan now too. He's grown so much. I hope he has he's hero moment against Blackbeard
Wild that the Straw Hats have spent more time in universe separated than they have together.
At first, the only thing I like about Helmeppo is the fact that his English dub was voiced by one of my favorite voice actors: Troy Baker
I honestly forgot who he was when he showed back up at water 7 🤣
Just a reminder, you need a super human body in order to learn the Six Powers techniques. A minimum douriki level of 500 is required for it, and the average marine was estimated to have around 10. That is a massive power boost for Helmeppo by the time he reappears in the series.
Been subscribed to this Chanel for a while and I’ve never told you how awesome it is. Thank you for the content. Cheers!
I want helmeppo to achieve something, he's had an incredible redemption from spoiled brat to respectable marine soldier
Helmepo has always been my favorite character but his og design is so valid👌
“All I need is hemelpo” is cold af
Always liked Helmeppo quite a bit since he was redeemed with coby and came back in post enies lobby/rtw7, hope we actually get to see him put in work in a fight sometime in the series… and if that’s against Blackbeard look Helmeppo I’m here for it but we’ll have to see how it goes down.
Morgans cruel line of speech to Helmeppo kinda makes Sanji Helmeppo 2.0
Helmeppo is one of the reasons i love OP so much.
From annoying, no-good, just-a-son to fighting mad-lad with a lot of style.
ODA being the real life Aizen. 💯💯
i remember watching the water 7 arc on TV years ago, when Helmeppo showed up with Coby i genuinely couldn't recognize him XD
Helmeppo: Garp! Will you help me get Koby back?
Garp: fuck it we ball
The amount of time that passes from the time luffy meets zoro to just prior to the time skip is several months… put simply it takes days or weeks just to sail from island to island; and the log pose needs time to find the next island. it’s vague just how much time actually passes, but it’s been around 3 years total from the first episode with helmeppo to current manga events.
This is widely debated amongst the community, but it’s largely accepted to have been several months(9 months or less).
i died when Garp said : all i need is Helmeppo XDDDD
Isn’t it more difficult to rise in the ranks in the Grand Line navy than in the East blue? Pretty sure Morgan had no haki whatsoever yet advanced to captain, while Helmeppo the haki-user has yet to do so.
After the whole Hachinosu thing, not only did Helmeppo take a CANNON for Koby, he survived the battle and caught his best friend as he fell from the sky. What a boss.
Probably one of the most overlooked character arcs in all of one piece
I have now more respect for Helmeppo than Smoker.
Smoker was just doing his job and following the law he was ordered to abide by more so than Akainu, so if you’re saying you despise Smoker then you should despise Akainu as much if not more than Smoker.
@Roronoa Zoro I have more respect for helmepo than smoker because he actually does stuff in the story.
9:50 the strawhats are a memace and reading about them in the newspaper must be mad entertainment
Luffy punched a whole new way of life into the poor guy
imagine instead of just garp, Luffy pulls up to blackbeards island with garp and fights along as coby was his marine best friend. representing the same fight of Gol D.
So basically Helmeppo is the marine version of Usopp.
Also bring back Devil Fruit Encyclopedia
only liam could give us 13 mins praising helmeppo legit no one else could or would
Fun Fact: me and my dad used to watch One Piece together and thought the name Helmeppo was so funny we started naming our online accounts after him
Bruh this guy STAYS spoiling one piece for me with the thumbnails and EVERYTHING 😭.
I cannot hide from this man.
Really? Explain what's a spoiler in this thumbnail. All I see is a picture of a well established character and some speculation.
Garp, Helmeppo, and Bogard are about to roll up and whoop ass. I can't wait.
You could say Helmeppo has had his very own Non-DF awakening by becoming the man he is now from where he was over such a short amount of time.
Helmepo went from pointing a gun at koby to save himself for a no name pirate to raiding an emperor of the sea to save koby
Helmeppo needs to become an Admiral alongside Cody.
Absolutely loving this Helmeppo appreciation.
The good thing in this video is that liam got content, helmepo got respect and we got a new video to watch
The man has been having one helluva character arc.
Helmeppo is odas proof that even some really bad people are still redeemable. We just have to give people a chance.
Helmeppo was already stronger than his father by water 7 and to think he isn't even the same Rank yet is apalling.
Lol he said „Schadenfreude“ so casually in his sentence 😂😂
Yeah, Sengoku did say that when he needs to face an emperor
Which is also implied by HQ vice admirals conference and gorosei.
Whatever happened to axe hand Morgan? After he escaped he was never seen or heard from again.
As a German, I just want to appreciate your usage of "Schadenfreude" 😂😂😂😂 you are amazing and thank you for not only keeping us up to date but also giving us so much insights on so many characters and One Piece in general! May our Future Pirate King, bless you, the Sun God shine upon you and the King of Enma protect you!
Anybody wanna bet Morgan joined the blackbeard pirates for one complete helmmepo story arc?
Right hand of Fleet Admiral Coby, Helmeppo the Ball-Chin
