Great video. One thing he didn't mention though, was that with each new series, the price went up. Since one of it's original selling points was affordability, that hurt it a lot. It was a sports car that the average person could afford.
Nice video. My first car was a used 1984 RX-7. It had the 1.2L 12A engine (no turbo) with 5-speed manual transmission. It was a joy to drive for the 7 years I owned it.
Excellent presentation with pics to satisfy us sport car fans, I owned a 79 RX7 and when the 93 arrived I thought it was the best ever ( but out of my price range) keep up the good work.
One thing to make clear the 13b REW didn't have two different sized turbos both were the same size and one operated at lower rpms and both kicked in at higher rpms 4500rpm just to clearafy Great Video!!!
What Beaver said is correct. The turbo's on the 3rd gen are sequential. Meaning at low RPM you run on the primary, there is a 500 rpm transition to parallel mode where you run on both turbo's until the revs drop below 3500rpm. It been awhile since I had the twins but I think the transition started at 4500rpm and completed at 5000rpm. Boost drops by 2lbs during the trans. In spirited driving it only happens once as shifts near redline will keep revs above 5000. US\production ended in 95' not 93' with 13,879 made over the 3 year span. Just for some context my black touring model with a 5 speed was one of 235 in 94' for the US market and only 3403 total. One of Mazda's slogans for early 90's was "it's not an everybody car", they could have added and not everybody can have one.
I think the 13A was the best engine 1979 I drove one before you can string the 13 name all the way to 55 before you even get to the second-gear you are already pushing 65 to 70. But it has to be tuned just right for it to go like that and that's a 79 RX7
why do you not have more subscribers your channel should atract many car enthusiasts great channel man so much info on so many great cars hope this channel grows
I enjoyed the video bro, I subscribed and are looking forward to more videos like this (you should do one for the Z series for nissan). Keep up the great work man !
Thanks man! The one for the Nissan Z is in my backlog as well as a few others. You've got great timing. I've just released the Mitsubishi Eclipse History a moment ago.
I had a 1980 for 13 years, what a fun car. After I was done with modifications it looked like it was going 100 mph sitting still and of coarse it did corner at 100 mph as well!
Dropped a like bud. 👍 keep up the great content. I see your channel gaining 100k subs before too long. Also watched your Honda type R video and Gtr ownership.
gary please make more of these car history videos, there really interesting and have learned alot from these videos, also if you could make separate videos explaining the rare and specialty modles like the nismo 400R
I do plan to make more in the future. I'm sure you've already seen the history video playlist. If not, check it out in my channel. I'll see what I can do with your request. Thanks for watching!
I believe audi is using or planning to use a rotary engine paired to a hybrid system to meet emission standards. If the RX7 returns, this is probably going to be the layout since the NSX and the R36 GTR is going the same route
3:49 Extra little information: The Series 1 is called SA22C, and the Series 2 and Series 3 is FB, that is the difference between the two if I remembered correctly. Here is a video comparing all the differences between two versions, on small exterior, interior details and more: th-cam.com/video/kZ8iJf4atUE/w-d-xo.html
A quick one to note, in the third generation there were actually 6 series as denoted by the beginning of the VIN for all cars with JDM style VINs. It's all in the first two digits after the first part of the VIN. FD3S-10xxxx -> FD3S-60xxxx ( www.rx7.net.nz/fd-jp-models.html )
Loved my Savanna but always it struggled in the torque stakes. Im so glad I kept the faith and waited for the FD3S. Haven't drive a better balanced car straight out of the box.
I was quite happy with the torque I could get out of the 13BREW in the FD. I owned that car for many years while in Japan. We had great fuel octane and mild weather. So with relatively minor mods, bumping it up was simple. Was surprisingly easy to keep R32s & R33s honest. The SA22C Savanna I owned in Australia. The 12A turbo without inter-cooling really suffered in the heat.
Thanks! Yeah, that's a tough one. I think the current state of Mazda right now may not allow them to continue with that project. Using the rotary may be difficult to meet current emissions standards and at the same time, making the power to be competitive. We'll have to wait and see.
@3:15 you have 2 things listed wrong. #1 they did have a 5 speed man. and you have the 84-85 13b listed as 1146cc 1.2l but thats the 12a the 13b is 1308cc 1.3l @6:18 its a gtus not the gtu
The RX-7,8, Skyactiv and many other Mazda projects came from one freelance designer. He has worked with many companies throughout the years and has now retired. The 16X rotary engine only received half of the design improvements from this designer, he kept the improvements for later on. The final designs were later destroyed by A unknowing third party. While the designer had health issues.
I had a 85 GSL-SE, BUT IT HAD A 12A My 90 don't remember witch model, but that had a 13B. So may I ask if someone swapped the engine in GSL-SE, why put a smaller and carburetored instead of keeping the original?
Damn buddy I like your video of RX-7 my favorite sports car from Japan! Could you help me if I buy a Spirit R Type A is it possible to convert it to Left hand drive?
That would be the hard way. Just get a left hand drive model and covert the body. You need need the 99' spec bumper cover, wing 17" wheels and taillights. Mechanically the main difference are the 99' spec twins which spool slightly faster, 4 way abs vs the 3 way in the US cars and upgraded ECU. The 4 way abs is nice but a unit from a corvette is vastly superior as they modulate twice as fast. The twins aren't worth it they can't handle as much boost and can't be rebuilt. Switch an aftermarket ECU unless you plan on keeping it stock. The 17" wheels are stupid expensive but look nice. The Mazda body parts aren't cheep either but it's the only bumper cover that fits properly. The adjustable wing is nice but it's fairly heavy. I only used the wing, the front bumper is an after market plateless clone, I do have a OEM in garage though. Went aftermarket with the wheels despite being 18's they are lighter and wider for 255's in the front and 285's rear with no rubbing on a slightly lowered car, the fenders were all rolled. I could run up to 295's all the way around without flares which isn't bad for a car designed for 225's.
a slight correction about all post 96 fd's being rhd. Mazda actually made 1 lhd 2002 spirit r at the request of the Mazda north America president to be used for display over here. motor tend actually has a video here on TH-cam of them taking it out for a review a few years back. I bet that thing would sell for a fortune if Mazda North America ever decided to let it go.
my brother owned a 93 cym r1 fd for over 17 years. i wanted to buy it for the longest time , but he would never sell it to me. i bought the evo and right after he sells it :( . it had 70k original miles.
The cars canceled are RX-7 in 1995, the 300ZX in 1996, the SVX in 1997, the Supra in 1998 and the 3000GT in 1999 the only surviver is the NSX until 2005.
I owned a '83 Mazda RX7 and later an 81. Both developed the dreaded oil leak of death. RX7 owners of 1st generations know what I mean. I loved both of them but couldn't find RX7 mechanics where I lived and to fix the oil leak you have take apart the engine down to the rotors. very expensive.
Not at this time. Any "RX7" will only be allowed to have a rotary by purists. A piston engine would stain it's lineage. The problem is that rotary's are too difficult to meet the stricter emission standards. I wouldn't count on a rotary powered 4th generation RX7 anytime soon.

idk why japan kills their great cars like the NSX, S2000, TYPE R, SUPRA, GTR, SILVIA, RX7, EVO'S, ECLIPSE, MR2'S, and to name a few. i mean, yeah GTR and NSX are back but they're not that intimidating as the 90's.
Check out my history videos and you'll know. Japan had a bubble in the 90's which affected all Japanese car manufacturers. Not sure what intimidating is to you, but a 13-14second 1/4 mile 90's GTR/NSX is no match for a current day 10-11second 1/4mile GTR/NSX.
All companies go through the same... stick around a little longer and you'll see it all come and go. None of them were intimidating though, all very civil, well engineered and very usable... you wanna experience intimidating? Try the supercars of the 70s! Big power, archaic technology, heavy controls and unforgiving handling, those things will chew you up, spit you out and leaving you bleeding out on the sidewalk. The 90s made everything easy and accessible, from EVERY angle.
Aaaaaah the days of owning a a rotary powered mazda...Trying to revaluate my life every time I filled the car up a full tank,oh and the oil consumption...😕
Hello yes hi I am a mustang fan and I always see in Ontario California RX7 always blowing the GT's and cobras doors. If I get a tuner car it will be a rx7
Great car. But it absolutely needs a turbocharger. I had an n/a 1986 gxl in white with red iluxury interior and 2+2 seets and sunroof. and it was fun but completely lacks the tourque and horsepower.
Mate they sold the rx7 FD right up till the end in Australia and beyond that of Japan you in correctly stated only sold the last models in Japan only Australians got every model Japan ever made and they started as Rx2 Rx3 Rx4 Rx5 Rx6 Rx7 FB, and FC and FD and they also made us our own model the FD series 7 Bathurst type R
There are also forged aluminium suspension parts in the 2. gen ( FC ) , have one . Even the car jack is made from this . According to the German understanding of the Wankel working principle it has no displacement here, we pay tax according to its weight ( 196€ / a )
Such a pretty looking car. But I sat in one on a used car lot. I think I also test drove it. From what I remember, it felt like you were lying down in the car, couldn't really see well, and I am five foot nine inches tall. Second, it was weird and hard to shift. Not pleasant. Pass.
Nate Rist Not disagreeing with you. I can see Mazda marketing wanting to round up since the "larger" 1.2L displacement may be more attractive in the USA or just sounds better. For us technical folks, it's not.
Rotary engines are junk! I’ve owned two FD’s and maintained the cars meticulously. Still had major issues with both. Leaky turbos at 21000 miles on one and failed Apex seals on the other at around 30000 miles. I should’ve bought Supras but loved the looks of the FD.
Berkeclor92 well damn 🤔 mine made it to 196,000 miles until one of the seals leaked coolant. I'm currently replacing it with a 13bt. Do yourself a favor and don't speak unlesss you have actual experience with these cars. Dumbass
Every 5-6 months, keep an eye on oil levels because it INJECTS oil for lubrication, and pre mix your gas for further lubrication. Not too hard at all, just gotta know what to do and why you're doing it.
Great video. One thing he didn't mention though, was that with each new series, the price went up. Since one of it's original selling points was affordability, that hurt it a lot. It was a sports car that the average person could afford.

Good to know! Thanks for the technical knowledge!
Actually the compressor trims are different but yes, the turbos are the same.
What Beaver said is correct. The turbo's on the 3rd gen are sequential. Like the history of the Rx7. Hopefully they bring it back. Zoom zoom

Cool! The only thing I can say bad is the picture you used for the s4 is actually an s5 car :p
Yups. Good eye. Already noted by another commenter below. Pretty difficult to find good quality images sometimes :/
Loved my Savanna but always it struggled in the torque stakes. Im so glad I kept the faith and waited for the FD3S. Haven't drive a better balanced car straight out of the box.
Yes. People complain about the torque, but the type of balance you get out of the car is amazing.
I was quite happy with the torque I could get out of the 13BREW in the FD. I owned that car for many years while in Japan. We had great fuel octane and mild weather. Yes, I think torque is just a matter of preference. Sounds like you've lived in interesting places. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I'm definitely an RX-7 guy. 💙💙💙
Who was the first to Bridgeport a rotary pls give an origin on this
You got series 2 and series 3 pictures mixed up 4:15 and 4:25... series 3 ran a 15" rim
Great video! I would still like to see where Mazda goes with the RX vision, but will it meet the CARB's standards (if sold in the US)?
Thanks! Yeah, that's a tough one. I think the current state of Mazda right now may not allow them to continue with that project. Using the rotary may be difficult to meet current emissions standards and at the same time, making the power to be competitive. We'll have to wait and see.
Do a video on rx3
I had a '79, '84, '86, '91, and '93. I love these cars and was disappointed when Mazda pulled them out of the US market.

David Girod Doh! Good catch. You are correct. Editing errors on my part.
its all good just dont want folks getting the wrong info

you mentioned a couple cars that were comparable, I think the Triumph TR7 was kinda similar as well...

my brother owned a 93 cym r1 fd for over 17 years. i wanted to buy it for the longest time , but he would never sell it to me. i bought the evo and right after he sells it :( . it had 70k original miles.
That's unfortunate.
what a bastard! always keep those toys in the family!
i had a toy fc and ae86 along with a touge track and i bought those real versions
Fun fact:Mazda also makes an Rotary powered pick-up called Mazda REPU
I was just going to say that both hitatchi turbos were the same size but someone beat me to it 11 hours previous haha
I know right. At least you read the comments before posting the same thing. lol
make a history of Subaru Impreza :)
StanceNation CHILE Yes, that one is already in my backlog.
You could still get one for 94-95 model year. here in the U.S.
So the FD was unavailable in North America after 1998?
After 1995 for the USA.
My 1989 RX7 still passes California smog (keeping fingers crossed).
What about Group B?
the first car I learned to drive a manual in was my dad's 1984 rx7 gsl se
I would be game for a small rotary engine crossover.
bravo
Thanks!
Stricter emissions laws have been holding back car companies a lot.
man 2nd gen is very beautiful
Ive got one and man they are powerful
The cars canceled are RX-7 in 1995, the 300ZX in 1996, the SVX in 1997, the Supra in 1998 and the 3000GT in 1999 the only surviver is the NSX until 2005.
Now this is my car

the 10th anni is the only series 4 you showed lol
Interesting Topic:
Not Fan of Mazda RX 8 but, will mazda RX 7 Revive? :)
Not at this time. Any "RX7" will only be allowed to have a rotary by purists. A piston engine would stain it's lineage. The problem is that rotary's are too difficult to meet the stricter emission standards. I wouldn't count on a rotary powered 4th generation RX7 anytime soon.

You would think Nissan and Mitsubishi would be doing some sort of partnership to make their sports cars, say Mitsubishi's model being awd exclusive while the Nissan being rwd exclusive.
Yeah, it would be nice, but from a cost perspective, it may not be profitable. I think the direction of Mitsubishi will be on SUV's and not AWD.
There is an 84-85 Mazda RX7 right near my house its being sold by this little garage but no price.
2 mins in to this video and I realized you were playing a cartoon song in the backround lol
😂 Good catch

Mazda Australia ceased selling the Rx7 after the series 7. All series 8 Rx7s in Australia are "grey imports" and where sold as second hand cars only.

12A is 1.1L not 1.2L just throwing that out there
Nate Rist Yes, technically it's 1,146cc/1.15l. They've rounded up to 1.2l, hence it's name.
they rounded it up for it's name, but is still classified as a 1.1L officially
Nate Rist Not disagreeing with you. I can see Mazda marketing wanting to round up since the "larger" 1.2L displacement may be more attractive in the USA or just sounds better. For us technical folks, it's not.

Agree, the FD looks great.
jackie chan ?
I really like RX7's, especially with American V8 power...
Likewise. Who doesn't? lol
😄👍🏻
First
Rotaries barely make it to 100k miles, save yourself the pain. Never bought an rx7 or 8
Good to know. I don't have any personal experience with rotaries, but have heard & read the same.
Berkeclor92 well damn 🤔 mine made it to 196,000 miles until one of the seals leaked coolant. I'm currently replacing it with a 13bt. Do yourself a favor and don't speak unlesss you have actual experience with these cars.
Dumbass
GT Content mine made it to 196,00 before it started leaking coolant in the engine.
Every 5-6 months, keep an eye on oil levels because it INJECTS oil for lubrication, and pre mix your gas for further lubrication. Not too hard at all, just gotta know what to do and why you're doing it.
Ford took over building on when G M should have the perfect car would have been the LS7 RX7
I’d buy an FD and dump the 13B out for an LS6.
Please brick back the rx Mazda and don’t make another rx8 please
Wer wird der Geschichte des Menschlichen Autos .........??? Ohne Schule & ohne Ausbildung = Politiker Schweiz......?
Just don’t call the next generation an rx9
