Heart of Darkness went through numerous delays. It already had a fair bit of money spent on it before Ocean was swallowed by Infogrames. I really would love to see a remastered HD version.
I feel you got 2 things wrong: Firstly the controls aren't "sloppy". They are better described as deliberately challenging. So much so, that i was instantly thinking of placing this game in a "Toughest games to complete" countdown, when i finished playing it for the 2nd time a few weeks ago. Heart of Darkness is HARD AS NAILS. But it's a game that players will respect, and more importantly, enjoy enough that they'll see it through to the end(if they're good enough - and don't mind pulling out some hair, and shouting at the T.V screen in the process.) Secondly, you mention the lack of music throughout all game play sections. This i feel is 1 of the games main strengths. I can recall no other videogame which placed such emphasis on pure ambience as Heart of Darkness does. It makes for a very noticeable, and refreshing change. Without a more emotive musical direction, it means that trawling throughout these difficult dungeon settings is more relaxing. It also meant that each "still" background screenshot could be infused with it's own subtle(sometimes not so subtle) ambient peculiarities. The sound design is masterful and infuses extra character into the creatures and environments. I wish a modern day developer would be as bold/adventurous to try out a game with nothing but ambience. If anyone's looking for a PS1 "semi-classic" and you don't mind a bit of teeth gritting in the process, Heart of Darkness may well earn your respect.
@@farmerfreakeasy It's not 2D but it does have prerendered graphics similar to the backgrounds in HoD. Major difference is it's in first person. Lost Eden has graphics EXACTLY like HoD but it's also first person and while also having noticeable music.
Yes but..... these 2 games are not really comparable. Hod is a 2D platformer with some shooting, and exceedingly lush animations(for the PS1). Whilst Myst is a first person adventure which probably takes more influence from old "Text only" games than it does 2D platformers. Myst doesn't feature any in-game character animations at all, and it certainly doesn't have any shooting. Myst might be Atmospheric, but these 2 games certainly don't need to be compared as being each others equal. I remember they remastered Myst a few years ago, maybe HoD will get the same treatment before long.
Flashback and Out of this World were fantastic. I've seen this around before, but never really looked into it. Thanks for the video, as I have another game to add to my list of games to pickup even if it's not a great one.
I loved the demo back in the day and never could buy it. It wasnt anywhere. And still isnt available today neither on GOG/Steam or any reatailer I know. Where do I get this game?
+Almir Canella [Coury] Chahi was only involved in that at the very, very beginning of development. Its an interesting game, I love seeing the events from part 1 from the Alien's POV. Depressing ending though.
Out of this World is easily finished as weel if you know what to do. Heart of Darkness was not well received for the same reason, plus being a 2D game in the boom of 3D era. I love both.
Imagine me being a Sega Mega Drive player for so many years and at 11 years old being given a 1st Generation SONY PS1 for Christmas and having Heart Of Darkness as my first game for the System and not only was I so used to playing on a 3 Button SMD Controller to having 12 new buttons to learn from, this game in essence was both metaphorical and literally a Journey.I was learning the new SONY Hardware,SONY Controller and after 2 weeks I was playing the game and loving every minute of it. However at age 11 this game was NOT forgiving for new players as right of the back, the game throws you straight in and the game and it expects you to survive and from the very start the Difficulty Spikes as quite tame in Disc 1 and when you reach Disc 2 then the game throws a curveball and ups the Difficulty to be insanely hard and each button press and each miscalculation can lead to constant death so if you didn't reach a checkpoint then you will get sent back a long while into the level and have to experience the pain and torture of doing it all over again and again. I honestly recommend watching Game Grumps's Playthrough of the game.It clearly sums it up. th-cam.com/video/RowY06jwRSs/w-d-xo.html
+theimporter [Coury] Since we're no longer posting videos to Rerez, we're moving all of the videos we did over there, here. They've been coming out every Weds for the past month or so. We've moved through all of mine, but since Try has all his original material, he's going to tweak his episodes a little. But we have 3 more left, so for the next three Weds you'll see em.
I've always wondered if any playable code of the original Mega Drive version of he game still exists out there. It's one of those games you'd see previews of for years and years with just the odd screenshot to tide you over. Also, this game is evil and I never finished it.
Man, I LOVED Flashback on PC back in the day.

Please Eric, bring Heart of Darkness on GOG and modern consoles!

Honestly I feel like this dude kinda shat on the game and this is one of my all time favorites right along with the original odd world games

*cough* Myst *cough* 😉
@@pferreira1983 A game i've never played. But correct me if i'm wrong, Myst doesn't have the same animations as HoD, does it ?

I bought Another World and Flashback on day one, and couldn't have been more amazed at both
Thanks for the video. There is an interview of Eric Chahi, and gameplay, on the channel Backintoystv.

Wait. There's aliens in this game that look Cyril Snear from the Raccoons?
Ha I thought I was one of the few that always thought that :-)
"Drug pipe" LMAO!
+My Life in Gaming have you played Heart of the Alien? it's the sequel to Another World. Watching the beginning of that game is insane.
+GeoDelGonzo [Coury] I have! I love seeing the events of the first game from the alien's perspective. I should really find it and replay it.

That ended abruptly
So did the game :/
This game needs to be ported to the Nintendo Switch..
How bout The sequel to out of this world? Heart of the Alien on segacd?

Almir Canella I was about to say the same thing.
You need an reoccurring outro line. Just sayin'

Just very trial and error. But I loved it despite that!
Out of This World was great, Heart of Darkness was absolutely astonishing. That poor kid died in so many terrible ways 😅

Rotoscope techniques, not technology.
Déjà vu, where I've I recently seen a similar video regarding these 2 games lately?
+theimporter Right? I was thinking the same thing too.

Feeling the same vibe as Caddicarus and Jirard for this game.
Really? Coury was a warmly grandmother to this game compared to them.
To be honest I don't care what those two think.
