Recently discovered this game and have watched a number of let's plays. You're the first I've seen with a realistic and effective opening gambit (any difficulty). Good stuff!
Started a game with only Ken on insane and left the storyteller on random. I think I got chaos ‘cuz my god I haven’t had a chance to do anything. Every other day is an attack with 25 insects vs my lone survivor. Not to mention the heatwaves, severe heatwaves, lightning storms, and meteor showers. Finally got flamethrowers up like 20 days later and I’m finally getting raids without taking damage. Gonna make things easier now that I can ff through them as he plows through research. All the while the game’s like: hey, you should be exploring! And I’m all: really? I’d love to!
Sora is good for grunt work like mining and cutting. Also there is a little patch of tall grass (the grain one) over by the glitter caps. Not sure if it is there in your game but it is in mine on this seed.
I got lucky this playthrough and found 2 sniper rifles from scavenging. When the game first game out, though, it seemed like scavenging was a great way to find weapons, but it's rare now.
In the desert you are gonna want to have your people sleep during the day and work at night when it is cool. Especially when you get your AC going so your people will stay indoors during the hot hours around noon. Hay is also useful for sausages and cloth, but you already have access to food and cloth so you are golden on those fronts. So why did you pull down the fence in front of the flamethrowers? I thought turrets could shoot over ground level fences.
You can´t, people walk 30% slower in darkness and have a manipulation deficit along with an unhappiness debuff. This plays such a huge role on insane, hard is nothing compared to insane.

Thanks! I'm always trying to improve; it's a fun game!

There's a couple of patches. I think in #2 I get it.
Nice...I would already be dead
It's a massive increase in the difficulty, but a lot of fun.
Curious to see the progression
I tried like 20 times on various seeds, even resorted to get everyone on scavenging only leaving one to sort the food out, never found a weapon.

Turrets can shoot over walls if they're elevated. Flamethrowers cannot shoot over walls.
