the end is the epitome of sing-alongs to me. not just because it kicks ass musically, but for the message i get. the end of this song is like a battle cry - we can all join together and share our mutual misery, fight and yell along to this mantra like soldiers on the frontline. but when the music dies down as the battle has been lost and we still feel like losers, Patrick assures us "that's okay." we can accept ourselves for the losers we are and take comfort knowing so many others feel the same
I have a lot of respect for ppl from NJ. I’m from baltimore and I know what it feels like for people to just trash you and where you’re from without ever having met you or been there.
I talked to patrick two nights ago when he played at my home town, and when he was talking he mentioned the line "There is a faceplate all brown and red that stretches across my mouth It's worn for protection, nobody gets in and nobody gets out I used to look myself in the mirror at the end of every day But I took the one thing that made me beautiful and threw it away" He said it was about his beard that he grew out because he hated his face, and do to his certain disorders thought he looked ugly, and grew his beard out as a result.
This is (counterintuitively) a really good song for the gym. While stickles is just screaming at you that “you will always be a loser,” I promise you, you will not skip that last rep, or get off the treadmill early, or any other form of quitting.
Awesome! Did I say that before.....? Truly awesome! Please come back to England as soon as possible.... Cameron, Clegg and the bloody Royal Wedding are killing us......
There's nothing in the world like Jersey punk. I knew this dude who was a guy in the New York punk scene in the 1970s, one of those burned-out hasbeen who had a lot happen to them but not a lot to say about it. He'd open for the Talking Heads and play CBCGs and was friends with The Ramones. We both were tour-guides on those double decker buses in Time's Square and most of our days were standing in the middle of the sidewalk and talking about nothing. I love punk, I love what punk used to be and I love what punk is now and I'd pick his brains about the early years of punk. One thing I wondered was that - over in Jersey - you had Bruce Springsteen happening at the exact same time as punk. I thought that was fascinating, where you have two forms of music written in the shadow of the deindustrialization of America...happening within miles of each other but they sounded nothing alike. I asked him if Springsteen ever crossed the river and came into New York and played venues when he was coming up, and my co-worker thought for a second and said "You know, I don't think we knew about him until everybody knew about him." Cut to today, where I strongly feel that punk left New York and settled into New Jersey, and it somehow finally you have this punk that's a little bit Springsteen while also still staying punk at the same time. Bands like Titus exemplify that Jersey punk aesthetic.
"Now there's a robot that lives in my brain, and he tells me what to do" doesn't mean you have to surrender your humanity, or what makes you you! You HAVE to to take care of yourself first, and the more you can do that on auto-pilot, the better. Then you can worry about the real issues; you'll always be a loser - but that's okay. I wish I could like this song a thousand times, it's been a real help the last weeks.
in this time of corona, that portion with the NB basement show breaks my heart :( ik this video is from 2011 but that could have been any show this past fall. can't wait for the days we can gather in a hot dirty basement and do that again
Jersey power! Im from a place that gets shit on all the time too. Thanks Tom Scharpling for making a video about being proud of where youre from. No matter where. Great song!
I have lived in New Jersey for all 17 years, 7 months, and 29 days of my life. This is such an accurate video. It's cold. It's dreary. There are trees everywhere. Every person you meat is a dick. However, whenever I visit any other state, I miss New Jersey despite the fact that it's a shithole. I go to house shows in my friend's basement to see local bands play and it feels like it's our little shithole, and we're damn proud of it.
I saw them at 80 35 they put on one of the best shows of the festival. this song makes me think of how iowa and des moines always gets shit on aswell people think we eat corn shoot guns and have no electricity but we have a beautiful city i think the best music scene in the country and the most talented bands that noone knows about and i know no one cares what i put on this comment and des moines will always be a loser in your minds but it is musical heaven to me and all of us.
Oh, and New Jersey has some really beautiful parts. All states have armpits and beauty in different parts. I blame NYC for using NJ as its dumping ground and urban commuter sprawl.
"We're gonna show the world, through this video, what New Jersey is really all about" *cut to* "Everything, makes me nervous, and nothing feels good for no reason. Waking up it's barely worth it, the same dark dread every morning." In all seriousness though, this band singlehandedly made me rethink my opinion on New Jersey.
I'm 37 and this gives me teenage angst in a good way :-) Anyway, as a European, I've been wondering: are Titus Andronicus serious with the NJ/USA flag displays (see also 'A More Perfect Union')? I know 'The Monitor' references the Civil War *very* extensively, and the lyrics aren't exactly 'rah-rah-go-USA' to say the least. I can see the two sentiments co-existing, but if you're critical of a country you love despite all its faults, why the prominent flags?
Good because I'm sure it's nothing like the picture you have in your head. Most people who've never been here have such a distorted understanding of what New Jersey. In fact, it has a vibe much like California, at least along the coastline and is one of the most under-appreciated states in the country which is odd because we are also one of the coolest and most beautiful states. asburyanchor dotcom is a good representation of the real New Jersey, not that bullshit you see on MTV.
I'm from New York. A lot of my friends and family live in Jersey. I can't really hate New Jersey because everyone who isn't from NY or NJ mistake our accents. See, we're all a happy family.

"And that's OKAAAAAAY!" followed by the yeah and smile is pretty much the New Jersey ethos personified.
This Album (The Monitor) is a concept album with a kind of arch following Ken Burns nine episode documentary, "Civil War". Raw. Brilliant!!
When I feel down I just love listening to the end of the song and chanting with them. Never fails to make me feel better.
This.
As someone who lived in New Jersey, I love this song.
Fuck yeah New Jersey! Fuck yeah Tom Sharpling! Fuck yeah Patrick Stickles! Fuck yeah Titus Andronicus! Fuck yeah rock and roll!
i've been hip to these guys since before i didn't have friends
I talked to patrick two nights ago when he played at my home town, and when he was talking he mentioned the line
"There is a faceplate all brown and red that stretches across my mouth
It's worn for protection, nobody gets in and nobody gets out
I used to look myself in the mirror at the end of every day

I know that the world's a scary place
That's why I hide behind a hairy face
These guys palyed at my school back in the fall. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I have a pic of me and Patrick.
a punk band appreciating their hometown... GASP!
It's probably bcuz they suck and everyone in their hometown knows it.
I mean shit, I lived next to glen rock and it’s not that bad
I love this song
New Jersey has a bad reputation in other states but some of the best music comes from there.
Reppin' the 973! Titus Andronicus (and NJ) forever!
973, place to be
I owe Tom Scharpling a thank you for consistently making great videos for bands I love.
This is (counterintuitively) a really good song for the gym. While stickles is just screaming at you that “you will always be a loser,” I promise you, you will not skip that last rep, or get off the treadmill early, or any other form of quitting.
The lead singers dad is my Principal. These guys are good as hell.
This band really rocks. Love it ! But I have nothing against New Jersey, but I still don't get why I need to learn what NJ is all about.
just perfect. start to finish. perfect.
Awesome! Did I say that before.....? Truly awesome! Please come back to England as soon as possible.... Cameron, Clegg and the bloody Royal Wedding are killing us......
This is my favorite Titus Andronicus song. I'm glad Scharpling provided an excellent video to go along with the tune.
I love to put on The Monitor and zone out for like an hour....... Awesome Band
Titus Andronicus Forever
Jersey Pride! These guys are awesome for doing this.
I touched that guitar
Love the jersey pride from these guys, I go to the same college as Patrick did!
Is this an official Titus Andronicus channel?
Oh Hell Yeah
The basement in New Brunswick is Fuck Mountain. Everyone should go there
Love the song but this music video can't even begin to equate the brutal emotions
The great garden state!!
titus andronicus is the best band of all time
I was looking for
Titus Andronicus movie play I recall from 20 years ago. Nice tune though.
You guys need to do a NJ tour, I seriously want to see you guys live before I move away, plus I want to see if my beard compares to Patrick's
Amazing stuff.
Jersey Rocks!

The Monitor is my album of last year. I can't wake up without listening to A More Perfect Union.
The good guys win!
They're playing Philly next week! I'M SO EXCITED! :D
New Jersey makes, the world takes
I've lived in Loch Arbour, W. Long Branch, New Brunswick, Hackensack & Hoboken ... GO GARDEN STATE
Well done.
The lyrics to this are fucking awesome.
Fuck yeah NJ man. He lives in my town.
So the real New Jersey is only east of New Brunswick. Gotcha. Good tune.
in this time of corona, that portion with the NB basement show breaks my heart :( ik this video is from 2011 but that could have been any show this past fall. can't wait for the days we can gather in a hot dirty basement and do that again
We love you! Nice handle by the way!
He's givin' birth to smiles!
Jersey power! Im from a place that gets shit on all the time too. Thanks Tom Scharpling for making a video about being proud of where youre from. No matter where. Great song!
Scharpling is killing it on every video he directs, new Spike Jonze or some shit. Swag
This band is nearly single handedly saving punk.
woohoo! they should play this many shows everyday
Ya'll taught me how to "stretch" stuff in vocals, if that's even a word lol. Fucking pioneers.
great Vid Tommy Sharps!
best fucking thing ever was when they played freebird
different than the type of video Scharpling usually directs but still great!
this the real jersey pride!
all i gotta say for new jersey is YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
As a north jersey native, it was. Camden is not New Jersey (it's pretty much part of of Philadelphia).
We have a bad rap but good pizza. I can live with that
I'll take the pizza!
I have never been so proud to live in the great State of New Jersey...
I have lived in New Jersey for all 17 years, 7 months, and 29 days of my life. This is such an accurate video. It's cold. It's dreary. There are trees everywhere. Every person you meat is a dick. THIS IS NEW JERSEY!!!!
You guy should play at brighton bar in long branch that would be killer!
@cheese0012 Great point, I think we New Jerseyans can get behind the spirit here. Maybe they will tour the West Coast in the next video.
AND EVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great moment in rock history, that line.
_for the glory of Newark Bears!_
nice, nice
man I fucking love New Jersey.
I don't wanna die like this
Why doesn’t he still play/tour with these guys?
wow after watching this video i really feel like i know what New Jersey's really all about
Great video, but no love for the western edge of our fair land? Warren County is the most beautiful part of the state, IMHO.
Clerks road trip
Best punk double album since London Calling.
I saw them at 80 35 they put on one of the best shows of the festival. this song makes me think of how iowa and des moines always gets shit on aswell people think we eat corn shoot guns and have no electricity but we have a beautiful city i think the best music scene in the country and the most talented bands that noone knows about and i know no one cares what i put on this comment and des moines will always be a loser in your minds but it is musical heaven to me and all of us.

how can you not love jersey after this?
Place looks cold. Brrr.
But you can have pride in the culture that you grew up in and ultimately shaped you.
I didn't know Thurston Moore was a big fan of yours (2:07)
Makes me wish I was from New Jersey
I'm 37 and this gives me teenage angst in a good way :-)

I like how the song with the lyrics "you will always be a loser" is selected for the Jersey montage
PLEASE COME BACK TO NEW BRUNSWICK!!
Brain Aid still needs ya! Talk soon. Stay safe! I look forwards to talking to you face to face, 6 inches apart, AGAIN!!!🎄😷🎄😷🎄😷

somehow they forgot to add The Meatlocker..i mean how can you have a video about NJ without that place, haha

I hate this state so much but this video makes me pretty proud to be living in it.
Neat video. Decent song.
Originally from Ridgewood, wishing I could go back every day
Geeee, Titus, don't show Tom Scharpling 'less ye wishith to frighten all away
.
@Titus Adronicus: Would you mind if I tried subtitling this one in Spanish?
@mmulkerrin Yes... Hipsters
I'm from New York. A lot of my friends and family live in Jersey. I can't really hate New Jersey because everyone who isn't from NY or NJ mistake our accents. See, we're all a happy family.
