Wow what a memory. Doesn't time really go bye so fast. I loved those days I would love to go back. Life was so much simpler and appreciated more than today's. 😀
Shows like this and the interviews and the stars on it felt more of a big deal then it does now. They had more of a mystery to them still. You didn't see them domesticated like you do now and posting tweets every couple of hours.
Been a long life star trek fan ever since I was 6years old I saw the movie.when it came out in 1979 I'm 64years old now and still a fan to the day I die
Here in '79, only a decade had passed since the cancellation of the original Trek show. But in the interim, OG Star Trek was kept alive by the 1973 Animated Series, Silent Running, Close Encounters, Jaws, Six Million Dollar Man, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Logans Run, Alien, etc & the beginnings of the sci-fi conventions. All these things of the 1970's contributed to keeping science fiction alive. And Shatner was constantly working in '70's films & TV, as well as Nimoy (notably "In Search Of", for me) & the rest of the gang. Nice to see Richard Dawson here too, takes me back to my youth watching his rendition of Family Feud. Now most of them are gone, including Dawson, so it's good to know that Shatner & Severinsen are still around. Johnny Carson was my dad's favorite late night host, who also became mine as well, although Conan is also my fave.
The critics censured it, but this is what Star Trek needed. A movie of great SPECIAL EFFECTS. This is in my opinion the best one. Trying to recapture the original series. Kirk with his arrogance and his Enterprise. An upgrade of the tv series. It could have been a tv movie.
I honestly love how much charisma William Shatner has. He gave off this air of confidence in himself in the late 70s and 80s that he didn’t seem to have as much of in earlier years. I think it made him even more attractive! I loved him in his Kirk days during the 60s but in the late 70s and 80s I feel like he became so much more sure of himself probably from his success and maturity- and sexier as a result!
It’s interesting that Dawson and Shatner are here. Shatner was originally in line to host Family Feud in 1975, but it was passed over to Richard Dawson.
@@davestewart2067 Yes. The energy of the actors was what made Trek so memorable in the series. You've got to turn them loose and let them bring it to life.
Several times in that interview Shatner almost stuck his foot in his mouth. When comparing the organization of the movie premiere, I thought he was about to make a reference to Vietnam. He changed the subject pretty fast.
It's possible he was trying to renegotiate at this point. There was even rumours about him possibly moving to another network. However, by the time 1980 came around, the show was reduced from 90 to 60 minutes, which was actually a condition of him getting renewed. He would remain as host of the Tonight Show until May 1992.
Yes, Johnny was considering quitting or moving to another network around this time but of course that didn't happen. He did got a raise, got every Monday off and had the show reduced from 90 to 60 minutes. Johnny took a lot of time off in the '70s, his most frequent guest hosts at that time included McLean Stevenson, David Brenner, David Letterman, John Davidson, Jerry Lewis, Bob Newhart, Joey Bishop and Steve Allen.
@@mckessa17 He was doing 3 days a week only I believe by 1980, Monday had a guest host and Friday's had reruns. That was set in his contract from what I know, then he had some 6 weeks off fully each year too.
Craig F. was hilarious but different than Richard. Craig played everything for a laugh and Richard seems like he actually cares. As far as Ray C. being better on Family Feud, you must have been breathing too many fumes from the Enterprise.
William Shatner was almost chosen over Richard Dawson to host Family Feud. Knowing this now makes seeing this interview even more fascinating. In comparing Ray Combs to Richard Dawson, Dawson was a comedian and a natural presenter. He was more at ease with people than Ray Combs who would try to work the audience for a laugh while Richard’s dry British humor could be funny w/o trying to be. IMO Dawson was the superior Family Feud host but having said that, Dawson did have an incredibly large ego and a reputation for being very difficult to work with that got him black balled and his work after the original run of ‘Feud was extremely limited. In essence, 1985 was when Dawson “retired ” until coming back in the 90s to replace Ray Combs for one season on Family Feud.
he's so incredibly eloquent & smart
I remember my brother and I watching this on Friday December 7 1979, this is the first time I've seen it since, 40 years later!
Wow.
That's some memory!
TH-cam is pretty amazing!

I love that at the end when he's going through the curtain, he turns around like he is entering a turbo lift loll.
Shatner is really a cool cat.
Great appearance by Shatner! Thanks for posting.
I forgot Richard Dawson used to guest host the Tonight Show!
This man is Legend!
Shatner does a great interview. Just introduce him and he's off and running! Or should I say talking? Love it! 👏👍👍😄
Oh William is gorgouse. I would have loved to be in whashington with him to see the premire‼️🖖🚁🖖🚁🖖🖖♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Hard to believe William Shatner was 49 here he looks like hes 30
48
48. 3 MONTHS, 2 WEEKS, AND 1 DAY LATER HE BECAME 49. 321

Just beautiful to see how much these guys appreciate themselves.
I watch ST TMP last night on DVD. I remember seeing the movie three times at the cinemas in late 1979.
DVD? What’s a DVD?? LOL
Incredible story that he has told about those poor men. He looks incredible for his 48years hear.
J'adore le rire de monsieur shatner.😁💋🤪

he was never offered it. did movies & TJ Hooker instead.
He mentions the other actor. Mr Shatner very generous as usual
Rare Video With Mister William Shatner and Richard Dawson, on The Tonight Show
9:33 that Vietnam vet driver story was amazing.
Cool interview. Best Star Trek film.
Men looked more masculine back then!
Consummate dressers
Shatner seemed to be booked mostly on Carson's off nights.
Why..?
Dawson in JCs place!
old Kirk and Newkirk
Hmmm I see what you did there! Brilliant
Little did he know at that time that you would live to be at least 90 and go in to space for free.
There's Some Thing on the Wing!!
Gotta admit...the toupee looked great that night.
Way better than the one he wore on Six Million Dollar Man years earlier. That one almost went flying off his head!
Do you have the rest of this episode with Lauren Tewes?
denny craaaanneeee....over and out
Number one:I never knew Richard Dawson hosted the show.
Number two: This may be the one and only appearance Shatner made on Tonite Show.?
Shatner and Dawson, epic!
Bill has done a few Tonight Shows. My favorite is him w/ Joan Rivers.
No. Jay Leno had him on in mid nineties
Dawson hosted 12 times around '79/80. His name was in the mix if Johnny's contract negotiations hadn't worked out.
he obviously didn't like Johnny Carson
So much more energy in this talk show appearance than he had in the film.
the film had scriptwriters, directors, etc. to do planned actions.
@@watchgoose They needed to turn him loose! Let Shat be Shat!
That’s why they did “wrath of khan star trek II” after the ponderous first movie. Khan was just like a TOS episode

Yes
1982
Will there be a sequel? Promise!!

" The Bill Shatner Story "
"Killian is lying to you"

It's very low, you have to turn it up
ST the movie didn't suck as bad as the audio/video alignment in this clip, but it's a close race.
Talk about a hamfest. Surprised they didn't grab the camera and start tag teaming it.
