So glad you were introduced to the Split Enz. I've been a fan of the Finn brothers since they first came out and was saddened when they broke up. I of course became a fan of Neil Finn and Crowded House and followed Tim Finn's solo work. In 1992 I got to go to a Crowded House concert where they played about half a dozen Crowded House songs when Neil Finn announced that they had a special guest and brought his brother on stage, breaking out with "Six Months in a Leaky Boat". The crowd went nuts with many people holding up Split Enz album covers. The rest of the set was Split Enz.
Great reaction Mike, for some more fun tunes from them, I suggest 'My Mistake', 'I See Red' and 'History Never Repeats', but for something really beautiful, try 'I Hope I Never' or 'Message To My Girl'. Just so you know, the banter between us and the Kiwis is just sibling rivalry, lol.
Splint Enz were known for outrageous costumes and their brilliant lyrical music. Had the pleasure seen them live and a proud owner of the music running sheet from the sound engineer of the concert.
Ditto. I saw them live in the early 80s. Magic & huge fun. This song is about Tim's six months in a leaky boat due to his depression & mental health journey. Please don't be so distracted by the video coz it's a deeeply emotional masterpiece.
Another New Zealand song that you will love, also in a cartoon format, is "A Slice Of Heaven - from Footrot Flats - The Dog's Tale", sung by Dave Dobbyn and The Herbs. The a cappella harmonies are beautiful, as they always are when the Maori people sing.
Big Man - the Finn brothers at their best lyrically and musically. It combines Maori-style themes, whiffs of sea shanty and great big dollops of Finn magic.
@@mrmockatoo6786 G'day mrmockatoo. Just devouring a mouse for supper while checking out first reactions to our great Aussie singers and bands etc. when I saw your comment.
The tyranny of distance ( a line used in the song) is the title of Australian historian Geoffrey Blainey The full title being "The Tyranny of Distance: How Distance Shaped Australia's History:
This is one of my all time fave songs. As far as I know this wasn't the official video. The official video is amazing (or at least the one we got in Australia is). This is a Tim song and the lyrics are actually quite dark. It's a little like 'I'm a loser' by the Beatles in this respect. The title is a reference to Tim's nervous breakdown (I believe following a relationship break up). It's an incredible song and it deserves repeat listenings. It's a an utterly unique song in a catalogue of brilliant and unique songs/ The Finn brothers were massive Beatles fans and you can hear that influence in this (and many of their songs). It would turn out that the surviving Beatles would become massive fans of theirs. And that makes my heart happy.
Never seen this version before. These guys had some great tunes. I wont list them again. I left some suggestions on your I Got You reaction. Watching someone else hear them for the first time is almost like hearing them for the first time again myself. Love it. Keep them coming
I think most Aussie think of NZ as an island state like Tassie . We take the piss out of each other but have always been brothers in arms .. the ANZAC legend is testimony to our bond ...PS split enz were ahead of there time .I saw there last concert tour called Enz with a bang ...good times good times
Yep that was Tim singing. Wacky, zany and really talented musicians. Love me some Enz! In 1990, my last year of high school I was lucky enough to see both Split Enz and Crowded House at the same concert! The Enz had split up in 1984 and Neil and Paul formed Crowded House but the Enz reformed and supported Crowded House for a tour in 1990. And yes Neil and Paul were busy that night!
Here is a link to the official video made at the time. The first 80 seconds before where this clip starts is an instrumental called "Pioneer"- the two tracks were sequenced together on the "Time and Tide" album, and when Split Enz played live they always played them together. th-cam.com/video/cSGpLto1yxU/w-d-xo.html
This was written about a 6 month rocky relationship. Thats Tim.. Do try to find Split Enz and the NZSO, a video called ENZO (orchestral versions of Splitz Enz songs) Neil and Tim Finn are Australian/New Zealand McCartney and Lennon.. their lyrics, their songs, their melodies.
Please some wonderful New Zealander send him a stuffed Kiwi or a hei-tiki so when he does The Enz or other NZ music he doesn't have to cuddle a kangaroo. 😆 Great reaction Mike - have loved this band from their start [showing my age again lol ]
Interesting fact. This song was actually banned and removed from radio in the UK when it was released during the Fauklands war between Britain and Argentina. Some thought a song about a leaky boat was an inappropriate reference to the British naval action at the time. Hard to believe!😮
My favourite Enz song is 'Message to my girl' :) The first 2 Crowded House albums were pretty successful in America (like 'Don't dream it's over) but their 3rd and 4th albums did better in Europe. One song from their 3rd album you might enjoy if you haven't heard yet is 'Weather With You'!
This is just pure creative and artistic genius... with a serious meaning. To crack the mainstream media with this kind of material is nothing short of a great achievement. Not that it's all about success, rather getting the message to the masses. *Edit: in saying that, this song was infamously banned on British radio.
Yeah, from many radio stations anyway. The Falklands War was occurring at the time, so references to leaky boats wasn't appreciated by some. The fact that some thought that the song was written as a veiled criticism of the war (of course, it was recorded before the war) was no doubt a factor.
I love Split Enz. They were such a huge part of my youth. My Mistake is a great song to try, also I Hope I Never, Poor Boy, Hard Act to Follow, One Step Ahead are among my personal favourites, but there is much more out there to enjoy.
After Split Ends broke up and Crowded House formed everyone raves about I think that Tim Finn has been forgotten. Shame because he had some wonderful songs of his owe many of them can be found on his Escapade album. It would be nice to see a reaction of some of Tim’s songs .
Six Months in a Leaky Boat is inspired by Tim Finn's bouts of depression. It can also relate to the invasions of the "tall ships" by the British to slaughter the indigenous of each land (Maori & Aboriginal peoples. No it's not about sea sickness - it's about the sickness of Tim's often talked about mental illness. The celebration aspects are the joy of Tim's welcoming back into & sometimes going walkabout to pursue individual expression . The brothers love is obvious. The genius songwriters of both Tim & Neil surfacing deep emotion is also obvious once you know why. x L.
As pointed out below, this song was banned in England because it came out during the Falkland war. But what is not widely known is that his 6 months in a Leaky Boat was a euphanism for a 6 month bout of depression.
This is not the official music video When this came out the falkland war was on and the british goverment accused the band writing a song about the war which it wasnt related
Falkland Islands, Britain banned this song being played as the HMS Navy's Aircraft carrier with their contingent of service men and women sailed to the Falkland Islands to fight Argentina.
It has been 40 years since I bought this brilliant album and today is the first time that I ever saw this video. Know that the madcap energy on display here is how Split Enz performed all their shows. Unfortunately, this video left out the excellent synth-based opening solo. The album version has it.
For a complete change of pace from them, try 'I Hope I Never'. It has a beautiful orchestral arrangement, and the piano work is sublime. Tim's voice is perfect. One of the best ever love songs to come out of New Zealand. The video is a bit cheesy, but doesn't take away anything from the song. th-cam.com/video/Pu98BS7UkHM/w-d-xo.html
I think that it was a fun song, but with a serious message. That is what Colonists did, spent 6m on a leaky boat to claim the land for mother England. We call this the Australia day, or more accurately invasion day :) BTW this song got banned in UK because the UK were at war with Argentina over some sheep herding island and the song didn't fit the national patriotic vision of the day.
I always thought it was just a metaphor for a rocky relationship that lasted 6 months; he mentions tempers flaring and how shipwrecked love can be cruel.
There is an official video, much better than this. Check the official Split Enz page. Read the lyrics, it’s an ode to New Zealand. Don’t tell a Kiwi they are like Aussies. Take that as a warning, from an Aussie. Suggestion: ‘Made my day’ by Tim Finn from Escapade (1983).

Interesting that this song was effectively banned in Britain as it came out at the same time as the Falklands War when British seamen were dying.
Strange when the song is about British people making the voyage from Britain to NZ to colonize it....
Yeah it was considered "bad for moral"
Love this 😭 Crying because I'm happy that you played this and I absolutely love Split Enz ✨🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾♥️

Paul McCartney was once asked " What's it like being the world's greatest songwriter"

That's been debunked several times.

They were from New Zealand.
How do kiwis find sheep in long grass.. Very enjoyable 😂
