    I worked for Pioneer from 1990 to 1997 as a technical representative along the Pacific Rim market. Pioneer was set in Meguro Tokyo at the time. I saw a bit change in those years. I still own and listen to Pioneer speaker systems CA 7700 from the seventies and 90s column speakers. Also a vintage Project component system.

    I love my 1986 Pioneer VSX-5000 with old school dolby surround. Has that definitive 80's look, great sound and everything still functions 100%. Probably the first "modern" A/V receiver as well as the 4000 which I believe were the first of Pioneers A/V's to have a remote control. I know it's not regarded as one of the best vsx receivers but I love the style of Pioneers 80's products.

    Paid over 5 grand in 1980 for a new Pioneer SX-1980 Receiver, Bang & Olufsen BeogramTurntable and four Bose 901 Speakers. Baddest stereo system on the block. Fast forward 39 years and it's still the baddest system on the block! Okay, maybe not the baddest now but it's a 40 year old system and it still kicks ass!

    I had a Pioneer FM 8-track in the second half of the 70s and early 80s. It was surprisingly rugged and an excellent signal source. The surprising ruggedness was revealed when the deck launched off the seat, smashing into the dash during a wreck. The signal source was FM radio and it was unaffected. My right knee on the other hand was severely bruised and required a week to recover.
    I never realized that the Pioneer symbol meant anything. Unlike the Yamaha three tuning forks symbol which was impossible to miss.

      endrizo they didn’t really focus on the mid to late 70s silver face receivers or the receiver wars of the mid to late 70s at all. That changed home based audio and stereo systems forever. Never again will we see such high quality stereo systems marketed and made available for mainstream consumption.

      And..... then came along the DVD and made all other forms of home video obsolete.... until the digital downloads changed everything years later. Although, I do still have LDs and LD players. Mostly for nostalgic reasons, but the audio quality in many of my LDs is superior to that of some of my older DVDs. Some are on par with my Blu Rays, as far as audio is concerned.

      16:02 The Peanuts (their real name, 1959-1975) were the most musically talented singing & performing Japanese duo of all time and they also appeared to The Ed Sullivan's Show in the mid-60's. Sadly both of them passed away in the 2010's.

    I don't think pioneer when I think audiophile quality or even high end main stream, more like reliable mass produce and cheap Japanese plastic stuff. I could be wrong or maybe that's just how it's been since I've been a consumer.

    • @jondubb35
      @jondubb35 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thad ward -You may not be familiar with their stereo receivers and other components of the 1970s then. From about 1973-1981 or so, Pioneer released some of the finest high end stereo receivers the world has ever seen. Look up the Pioneer SX-1010, SX-1250 and/or 1280, and perhaps the granddaddy of all high end late 1970s receivers, the SX-1980. These are all the furthest thing from “Cheap Japanese Plastic Stuff”. The cheap crap would come much much later. Mid to late 80s and beyond.
