The old foil pack of taters with shrooms and onions... man after my own heart! Thats one of my favorite go tos for camping or grilling. Try Cavernders greek seasoning on them or even Louisiana hot sauce... you will NOT be disappointed! Just a tip from one guy to another.
Congrats on the nice flathead. Those rascals seem to avoid me. I've caught a couple on trots, no luck on the rod and reel. Glad you made time to go see your Dad, I fish with memories of my Dad constantly. Cherish him every day, because, when they are gone, it's a tremdously helpless & empty feeling. Ditto with Mom, too.
As far as the flatheads go, just try to make adjustments based off of what does and doesn't work. As far as my parents go, I try my best to do exactly what you said. Thank you for watching sir!
@@RiverCertified I certainly need to do things differently. I guess I have been repeating the same actions & getting the same results. @@paulatkinson4439 that's a cool tradition. As far as getting into cover. Great idea during the day, but not usually necessary at night. This is one of my favorite videos. I am freaking out not being able to fish for them. It gets me going when nothing else will. If anyone knows that feeling tho I kno it’s you. Love this channel gonna keep me going threw the winter.
Is there anything better than fishing live bait and watching your rod bounce when they get excited? Love it! Great fish! I can’t wait to land a flattie like that one day. My husband caught his first flathead this past weekend. It was long and skinny. About 15 pounds. We took it home and I cut him up. I found a huge hook in the gut with a long bit of line going all the way to its mouth. Point is, that fish was still hunting and eating live prey. They live after a gut hook :)

I caught a small pike on the flyrod and while taking the barbless streamer out of the mouth noticed a steel leader protruding from the mouth. Great video! My personal best is a 43 lb. Flatty & it took everything I had just to pull her outta the water. Keep the videos coming I enjoy the heck outta them.
I usually keep the ones that are gut hooked and bloody but if they are not bleeding I release them 20lb or bigger the smaller ones don’t really survive if they swallow a big hook
I probably should have taken the hook out. They eat a million things with spines, so it is probably fine. At least that's my thoughts. Next time I'll know better. Thanks for watching!
That monster should be fine even with the hook in I’ve caught ones that big with multiple hooks in there stomach the best way to know for sure is stick them on a long stringer for a few hours worse case it’s already on the stringer
Not a terrible idea. In iowa unfortunately if you put em on a stringer you gotta keep em. If you let them go after that, you can get a ticket for "culling".
I could see if someone left fish on a stringer for a day or two or leaving and coming back for the fish but having a fish on a stringer for a few hours that’s crazy I catch fish put a few on a stringer if I don’t catch enough I release them all the time
I have read that guthooked fish actually have about an 80 to 90% chance of survival. Wouldn't it be great if somehow there was a hook that rusts out quickly, and just comes out naturally?

Awesome video and beautiful flatty! Love how you just get out there and do it! True passion for the outdoors! Did you weigh her? Had to be close to 50#er. Good job !
Thanks Tim! You definitely just summed me up haha. She went 50 lbs 11 oz. Biggest I've caught in the last 3-4 years.
@@RiverCertified Definatly a trophy fish! Keep it up brother! People fish their entire life in hopes of catching a fish that big but few are willing to put in the work! Congratulations!

At 1:07 where did you get big sinkers like those?
I make them, but theres a guy on Ebay that sells them. Just look up "flat bank sinkers". Thanks for watching!
@@RiverCertified cool
20 seconds in im crackin up. Thanks spence
Like what ya got going on boss.. I kayak fish my river here as well.. what river you on brother
Thanks! I fish mainly central iowa rivers, but branch out when I get the opportunity. Thanks for watching!
Looks like an awesome trip! Random question. but how do you like the metal real-seats over graphite? Also, do you think someone could have done the same trip in a canoe instead of kayak?
Whole lotta fun! Honestly I am kinda leaning back towards graphite. Its a little lighter and plenty strong enough. As long as the canoe floats it'll definitely work😁
Great video, keep catching big ones and stay safe. See you found some line lol.
Thanks Brian, I'm gonna do my best! I had some at home. You all talked me into filling up the spool 😁😁😁
Love your vidz man. I would love to do a trip like that some day....
Thanks man! I hope you do someday!
That was an amazing fish man, congrats!
