I grew up there most of my life and it's just like a lot of other towns a long the coast has gone down, the leaders of the city just let it go to pot and this didn't happen over night, I pray that they try to bring in new businesses to the city and clean up their town.
But the real problem is no one wants to live there due to the horrible Refinery pollution. Anybody who could get out got out in the 1970s and 80s it was called the great white flight. Port Arthur is nothing but refineries and mosquitoes, the cancer rate are 10 times the national average is horrible. Who would want to move to what is basically a desert with very few grocery stores, no retail stores, nothing at all to do

I was told one of my young babysitters was a girl named Janis who had the same middle name as mine, "Lyn". I used to imagine it was The Janis Joplin! Who knows maybe it was, Mom couldn't remember. I lived in Port Arhur from 97 thru 2003. Walked everywhere in that town and never had an issue. Sure there is plenty of run down homes and businesses. But it wasn't nearly as bad as people made it out to be. Moved to Nederland TX in fall of 2003. Would walk most nights to the Walgreens on I think it was Highway 365. Got robbed at knifepoint not long after moving to Nederland. Which is suppose to be " a much safer town than Port Arthur." All they got was about 10 bucks out of my wallet. But still kinda shows ya that just cause a place looks bad doesnt mean it is bad.

I spent a month there coming from El Paso doing security at the Chase bank next to the Wal Mart off Twin Cities after Hurricane Harvey and i have a feeling it was like that before the hurricane.

Downtown seems like a ghost Town , it has beautiful old and empty building . Looks like it was a prosperous city many decades ago . It has also issues with the garbage , they don’t pick up as schedule and you can see that there’s trash in the streets . I don’t know why but it looks like a 3rd world country . This a reflection of the city leaders . This a beautiful twins with a lot of potential but I can’t recommend anyone to live here .

I lived on Proctor when I was a kid back in the early 2000s. My grandpa sold some of his land for them to build a convenience store called Mark's. Now it's called senor z and the house next to it has been abandoned for many years.
Port Arthur, the home of rock star Janis Joplin (Thomas Jefferson High School class of 1960) and Jimmy Johnson of Dallas Cowboy fame, and in the NFL Hall of Fame (Thomas Jefferson High School class of 1961). It was a prettier, prosperous, and happier town back then. The hard working people in the Port Arthur area work in the many area chemical refineries and have produced the majority of the nation's gasoline and diesel fuel for decades. But, it's been a victim of major storms that devastated the city such as Hurricane Rita in 2005 and Hurricane Harvey in 2017. God bless Port Arthur.

The roads are beat up bad. Mostly well looked after homes. I'm sure it's different at night. Humid as hell with mosquitoes feasting.
I hate to be the "my dad can beat up your dad" guy but compared to here in the hood in Oakland, those roads are straight smooth.
