    I like how a 30 year old regional train in France has a higher top speed than any Dutch train, even those that use the designated 300 km/h high speed line 😔

      Hahah. Trains in Bulgaria has top speed of 90-120 kmh

    I always like TER train sets (whether loco hauled or multiple units) and how each French region has their own colorful livery!

    • @igorsiuda8108
      @igorsiuda8108 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Same goes for Polregio! Each voivodeship (with the exception of Masovian, where Koleje Mazowieckie operates all regional services in this voivodeship) decides which livery would be like (althrough of that, they have even a main, red-white-orange livery).

    At the end of last summer, I went from Lille to Paris to Tours by TGV and back via Orléans by TER. Simply because you always explicitly mention the Corail coaches :) And I have to admit, you're absolutely right! Although I have no childhood memories of these trains, their vibe is something special. And the seats are indeed comfy.
    (A week later I was in a Belgian Siemens Desiro, as often the case, used as intercity. Dear lord. That's a bus on rails. I live between Gent and Antwerpen by the way.)

    • @zeisselgaertner3212
      @zeisselgaertner3212 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Siemens Desiro is in fact a simple EMU for commuter services.
      But to be honest I have no clue why the seats in the Belgian version are that unpleasant.

  • @TheMaartian
    @TheMaartian ปีที่แล้ว +21

    This is a LOT nicer than the double deck TER service between my home in Arcachon and Bordeaux. First class has the same seats as second, on the upper deck of one coach. It's just less crowded, if only by a little. One nice feature is that it uses the same two tracks at Gare Bordeaux-Saint-Jean. I never have to check the monitors for the track assignment.

      Yes the first step for the clocked schedule and the diametralization with the Libourne line.

    Hi Thibault, great video once again! just one big fact: we both know that no matter how many years pass Corails will always have much better 2nd class seats than many modern 1st class trains! 😜

    One of my favorite trains and route! Sitting in those plush seats drinking a Rivella while looking at the mountains isn't a bad way to travel😀. To me it is a better alternative on my north/south travels than sitting ( if are you lucky ) on an overcrowded ICE not doing more 200km/h on the German side of the Rhine.

    Very happy to have these sets on my local Vallée de la Marne service. Excellent comfort and capacity.
    In regards to unrefurbished carriages, they are rare and it’s at maximum 2 or 3 carriages out of 8 so it’s not so bad! And for the compartments there are extremely few actual carriages (not control car) with compartment but they are gone by end of 2023. Excellent video ✌️

    Good to hear that the refurbished Corail coaches will be around for some time yet. At present loco haulage is available over much of France but the rot will set in from next year when the first of the new Inter City emu sets are due to be introduced with all sets in service by 2026.

    However, in comparison, Poland uses more multiple units for regional services than intercity ones, which are mostly served by push-and-pull sets (loco and carriages, with the most common one being EU/EP07 from Pafawag).

    I travel this route a couple of times a year. I absolutely love those corrail coaches, to me they are "1970s sofas". I can only suppose that the Grand Est region is influenced by its proximity to Switzerland, they have to bring their A game out if they are going to bear comparison to SBB EW IV sets in Basel.

  • @bolognese820

    Very nice video, on a train I often take! But on the other hand it is necessary that I make a small precision for those which want to borrow it.
    You should know that it is normally extremely full. Saturated. Overcrowded. That's why I advise either to buy a 1st class ticket, or to take a train on a less busy schedule. Otherwise finding a seat, especially with a family, will be impossible most of the time.
    Nevertheless an excellent journey, very pleasant to make and I recommend it :)

    I remember going from Lyon to Strasbourg, over 10 years ago (on those excellent Corail coaches) and thinking things were looking unexpectedly fast outside the window. My first ride in Corail was around 1987 in a EC Milano - Lyon. (And I burned my legs in typical very short shorts on the black seats of imitation leather - before start the train was a long time under italian sun...)

    haha.. that's funny... I rarely ever travel to France, but last week I was in the Vosges mountains.. and if it hadn't been for me being able to ride along in someone else's car, I probably would've had to use these trains last Tuesday..
    Aside from this, these trains look quite nice, and that's also how I remember them being when I travelled on a Corail Intercity between Paris and Toulouse and back in 2021. Although the refurbished coaches (which I had from Paris to Toulouse) are a lot better than the classic coaches (which I had on my way back). And accessibility... well... honestly, what I think they should do - if this is possible - is build some kind coach, maybe as the driving trailer, with low floor access, accessable toilets, et cetera, that could be combined with a corail train set that for its remainder would consist of "classic", non-accessible coaches. They can then keep on using these very old trains, while having accessibility for passengers with limited mobility at the same time.
    On a side note... quite funny that these trains are named "TER 200", considering that a similar type of train in Germany, also consisting of old intercity coaches, is named "IRE 200". And both trains are doing pretty similar jobs...

    Hi, I remeber the Corail carriages from over 40 years ago when the Dutch railway operator leased several of them for a try-out project. Quite impressive for those days.. the ease of ride, airconditoning, comfortable chairs especially in 1st class. A wonderfull experience in those days compared to the rather harsh ride in the standard rail gear..

    Very informative video. We will be travelling from Zurich to Strasbourg in early May 2023 so will be changing to the TER in Basel. We will have two medium suitcases plus a backpack each. The luggage facilities don't look great, though if it only has the same number of pax as in this video then I guess we can find room for the cases - perhaps put them in bicycle area. Also as you noted, accessibility isn't special either, which as a couple of 70 year olds we will have to watch that. Thanks again.

    When I just got out the army in 07 me and my then-girlfriend got interrail passes and travelled around France in Corail coaches. I can’t say they madea big impression apart from the very generous bike storage. These days I much prefer HSR of all kinds, busy busy busy, but if Corail can run 200 kph, how big can the gain be on such a short distance. Great application of existing stock, well done Grand Est!

    Nice video as always 👌since this video is about a regional train I would like to share an experience that I just had and have an opinion from you. I came to Paris last month and I took the RER B from CDG to Luxemburg in central Paris. The train was very very crowded up until chatelet les halles and since I had a couple of luggages and my son on the stroller the journey was a nightmare. Then for the rest of the week my experience with Paris metro system was great, but it would be nicer to have a dedicated train for the airport with fewer stops and more luggage racks.

      In 2027, the CDG Express will connect the Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport to Gare de l'Est in 20 minutes with a train every 15 minutes. It's called the tourists' train as you won't be able to take it with the transportation card.

    2:09 sorry, the 25k/v electrification is on more than 1-2 tracks - in fact it includes all the tracks ending at the building AND they can switch the current at track 30 along the station.
    2:40 two years ago this hall was the Border Control between Switzerland and France.
    Isn’t it great SNCF has seen the possibility for push-pull operations for fast trains in Switzerland ?
    Btw, the whole line from Basel to Saint Louis is already french…. It was the first train line in Switzerland in 1844.
    Two trains an hour… if they find someone to drive it ! A lot of problems since timetable changes in December.

  • @EpicThe112
    @EpicThe112 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The reason why you are running the right side of the tracks just like the sections around Gare de Thionville & Forbach because 130 years ago Alsace Lorraine was part of Germany where trains run on the right. For the OHLE 25kv 50hz these were recently renovated or the original 1950s build when Bâle CFF Strasbourg Ville was Electrified to 25kv 50hz. Corail Société Nationale Chemin du Fer Français SNCF equivalent to a British slam door Mk 3 non power door version. In Germany Corail seems to be equal to a Deutsche Bundesbahn N-wagen Deutsche Reichsbahn (RDA République Démocratique Allemand) Rekowagen M-wagen & DR Y-wagen UIC slam door version

    As I've stated before. Alstom needs to release a "Corail 2" next generation car to replace these and to compete with siemens trains like Obb railjet and nightjet. I agree they are excelent cars, but very dated and SNCF does a very poor job keeping them clean for the passengers on its TER services. Nice video thank you for sharing!

  • @sebastiannegrete9659
    @sebastiannegrete9659 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Customs booths are still there because Switzerland is nor part of the European Union, thus you can be subject to customs inspection from either Swiss or French authorities in the French part of Basel SBB Station. Here in Marseille you can still see Corails and some of them are in better shape than in Alsace, one big complaint of the Basel-Strasbourg TER services is that these are regularly canceled... being so close to Germany and DB railways may give them the bad luck of not being punctual

    First class is incredibly awesome and gives some good old chills since they didn’t renovate this class a while ago
    If they would do it, it would be worse than the past, with stronger material, ewww.

    il y a d'autre régions qui distinguent les classes. (à minima centre val de loire). c'est bien dommage à mon avis de garder un première classe, vu qu'on retire 25% des sièges des voitures concernées.
    Le reproche à a sncf de ne pas faire un plan ambitieux de rénovation des corials pour les remettre aux normes de confort actuelles est un faux procès : on est sur un ter, et la sncf ne finance pas (donc ne décide pas) les rénovation du matos. Les rénovations téoz sont vraiment pas mal je trouve (mais un peu vielles aussi, vu que ça date du début des années 2000).
    Pour l'accessibilité, le mieux qu'on puisse faire avec le planchers hauts, c'est ce qui est fait dans les voitures prévues pour avec une large porte latérale et des ascenseurs. les corails ne pourront donc jamais être vraiment accessibles. je trouve dommage en revanche que pour le nouveaux matos tos les acteurs (sncf, région, état) ne mettent as le confort d'assise plus haut dans leur cahier des charges...

    Yeah! seats body are the same from the beginning (70's) but it's still comfortable today.
    Imagine in 70's when passgengers discovered the corail comfort ,against the old cars in service at this time ("saucissons" and other steel cars) and pulled by the news electrics motor locomotives (BB22500,BB15000,BB7200,CC6500).
    A good shocking time
    Ah! for information BB26000 25kV pantograph is naimed AM90U ,the TGV equivalent are AMDE (PSE TGV) ans GPU (TGV A and reseau/network).
    for no french speakers ,the train controller announces the arrival at the station, and the next 2 or 3 connections with the platforms. This is only found in Alsace.
    5:45 your neighbor seems dubious 🤣

    Great video Thibault, thank you. Must say I much prefer the older and better upholstered Corail carriages. So many of our train seats now here in the UK are so uncomfortable.

      UK is pretty famous for having such shitty seat. I can relate...

    Great vídeo! What program do you use to track the train’s speed while on board? I’m very curious!

    Unfortuntaly, for interior of corail coach, or rebuil them with better accessbility, it's not SNCF which can decide (but I don't think it would if it had this right). All these coash are property of their region. So it's up to Grand Est Region to take a such decision.

      it would be less complicated to raise plateforms to 1m and to remove the step of the coral...Because the cars are high and the stringers cannot be modified.

    8:53 I see I'm not the only one who hates mulhouse's station, it's 60's concrete so it's not beautiful but even then there is moss and cracks everywhere and it feels like it's falling apart. probably the worst station in France
    10:26 doesn't the PACA region still has 1st in TERs ?
    10:53 Watch out for your ears ! Yeah in the video it doesn't transcribe how loud it is crossing between two corail coaches at 200kmh
    Overall I really like this service, even tho the last time I tried it was last December and train interiors were in rough shape and pretty dirty you can only say that it's a reliable trainset with a lot of space and is insanely confortable. But it has it's flaws and accessibility is one of them, I hope that if and when new coaches are delivered (I think there is an order for sleeper cars but not sure about "normal" ones) they will be as confortable as their predecessors but one can only hope.

      PACA still has some first class Corail but they don't sell tickets for first class anymore.

    What is the other train type running between Mulhouse and Basel which stops everywhere and take 32 minutes?

    Your video was very helpful. If I am going to use the TER between Basel and Colmar and Basel and Straubourg, do I need to purchase train tickets in advance?

      Yes you do. But a few hours/minute before is also alright :-)

    I have been on the corail intercities train from bordeux to Marseilles many many times and have been a fan of its convenience but it is pretty outdated and a refurbishment would be nice for it tbh.

    The coach looks quite bad for a restored one; but for ONE hour of travelling is just PERFECT; for one hour train travel, I wouldn't book first class!
