    Are you lost when it comes to fan direction? Let Del Mar Fans & Lighting show you proper ceiling fan direction for summer and winter. Changing the direction of your ceiling fan is a cost-effective and energy-efficient way to remain comfortable all year.
    In the summer, ceiling fan blades should rotate in a counterclockwise or "forward" direction to create cool downward airflow. In the winter, fan blades should rotate in a clockwise or "reverse" direction to redistribute warm air, which naturally rises to the top of the ceiling. Changing the direction of a ceiling fan is as easy pressing a button, flipping a switch, or tugging a pull chain.
    Del Mar Fans & Lighting is an online ceiling fan and light fixture distributor with 19 years of industry experience. The direction he is referring to is from the motor end of the fan. That is why it confusing the way he is explaining clockwise and counter clockwise. The thing to remember is air down or blowing on you in the summer and air up or blowing to the ceiling recirculating the hot air back down the walls and across the room. Summer lower air winter raise air.....Like a thermostat summer lower temp winter raise the temp..... I hope this helps

    I knew that counter clockwise was for summer so I went around and reversed all my fans to what looked like counter to me but I noticed the air movement wasn't as good . I watched the video and what Del says is counter clockwise looks clockwise to me so I went back and changed all my fans . It feels better now.

    Thank you for the informative and simple video on fan blade directions. My problem is that I agree with Doug! Your counter-clockwise is actually clockwise. The 'college education' is to stand under the fan. If you feel a breezy downdraft of air, it is going in the correct direction for warm days. I incorrectly refer to this as 'clockwise', according to the video. What do I know!?

    • @vfree4579
      @vfree4579 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What what if your air condition is broken do you still put it in a position where you could feel the warm air downward and I'm using a swamp cooler in the meantime

  • @kennytheleo
    @kennytheleo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Helpful to me because none of the text would tell you the perspective of the movement! Looking up or from the fans point of view. Clockwise from my perspective, is actually counter clockwise for the fan and that’s where the confusion comes into play. Watching the blades in your video from a stop position as you say the direction helped clear up that it is from our perspective.
    This pandora box is a lot like looking at someone and saying right side when to them, it’s their left side. In that case you usually cater the request to their perspective. In this case with the fan, we are not!

  • @rebeccabruns374
    @rebeccabruns374 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just watched your video twice because the terminology of 'counter' vs 'clockwise' can be confusing because of how we are used to watching an actual clock with 'hands' move around the dial. Suggestion: turn the fan OFF. Then using YOUR hand manually turn the blades and say the direction. Then stop the fan. Manually move the blades in the opposite direction and say the direction. I know they can be manually moved because when I go to dust my fans they like to zoom around on their own! Thank you for helping us learn about this confusing topic.

    The caveat being IF running AC in the summer I like to run it in 'winter' position so it pulls the cold air up and lets it fall/circulate. Helps with window units to draw cold air up and in rather than away.

    As crazy as it sounds and as simple as the concept is I could not decide how to look at the fan to determine CW/CCW. You stood there twirling your hand and “voila”! Now I’m good to go for summer and winter. Thanks!

    Thanks for confirming what I already knew. I looked up at the pitch of the paddles to determine to proper direction. I only want to gently stir the air in winter, hence the lowest speed. Now to make the other half see it this way. That can be a challenge.

    I have a ceiling fan in my foyer, which is between the two floors of my house. The hot air is upstairs while the cold is downstairs, so having the fan sucking the cold air from downstairs and cooling the upstairs in the summer has been working great for us. We just installed it a couple of weeks ago. I was so sick of the upstairs being 10 degrees hotter upstairs no matter how low I set the a/c.

    I don't know why I'm seeing this wrong, but I swear when you say "counter-clockwise" that it's actually going "clockwise," - opposite the way a clock runs. And, vice-versa, when you say clockwise, it seems to me that that's counter-clockwise. In the very first shot, before the close-up, isn't that "counter-clockwise?" Hmm???

    • @willpatton
      @willpatton 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      You guys are seeing it wrong. When it's going fast after he has it started, it's just the effect of a poor camera that doesn't show it well. But, look at it when he first starts the fan, it's counter-clockwise. You're using clockwise and vice versa from when you're looking UP at the fan, not as if you're looking down at the fan from the ceiling.

    • @dustydownsouth
      @dustydownsouth 9 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Haha... I feel crazy trying to explain this. See... I thought the same thing too! I thought he was incorrect until I figured out what my problem was. I was actually placing the 12 where the six needed to be. I will explain... If you look at the fan at an angle (as the video was shot) normal instinct "for me" was to place the 12 at the furthest point. In that case the fan is going clockwise (as we know now is wrong)
      But, by changing the perspective, standing underneath the fan, while looking straight up, you will see the fan is actually going in a clockwise direction.
      The camera is just fine...
      Understanding how the pitch and rotation of the blade and the way it pulls or pushes air makes this a non-issue, it's just fun to figure things out for the heck of it. Always question what you don't understand no matter how simple or minute the problem may seem.
      Good day! Hope this helps.

    This is up to debate based on where you stand in relation to the fan. When looking at the fan from an angle not directly underneath its center, counter-clockwise is the opposite of what you identified as clockwise. When you are directly underneath the fan, you could be correct.

    For vertical direction switches, flip the switch down for downward airflow or flip the switch up for upward airflow.
    For horizontal direction switches, flip the switch to the left for downward airflow or flip the switch to the right for upward airflow.
    Use the steps below or the video below to change the direction of your ceiling fan:
    Shut off the ceiling fan and wait for the blades to come to a complete stop
    Using a ladder or step stool to reach the motor housing, locate the direction switch
    Flip the switch in the opposite direction
    Step down and turn the ceiling fan back on
    Verify the ceiling fan blades are moving in the right direction

I have a suggestion though... before changing the direction of a ceiling fan it would be a good idea to dust off the top of the fan blades. I didn't realize how much dust built up after the long winter, and the rest of the fan looked fine and dust free, or so I thought. I switched the direction of the fan and all of a sudden in was raining dust...dust strings...tiny dust balls.....ick! Live & learn LoL

      +Walter Chambers We've been hearing that a lot! To some people the fan in the video seems to be going the opposite way, but make sure to follow counterclockwise for summer and clockwise for winter. A different way to tell is to reverse your fan and stand under it, if you feel a cool breeze then it's rotating counterclockwise. If you feel nothing, then it's pulling air up (clockwise)! Hope this helps! -Alexa

    I think it is important to state whether the face of the clock is seen as you look up to the fan or if it is on top of the fan. You would eliminate much of the confusion by stating that the face of the clock is seen as you look up to the ceiling fan, not down on it.

      +I.P. Knightly Haha, we feel your pain! A great, simple way to tell is
      to stand directly underneath your ceiling fan - if you can feel a breeze
      than your ceiling fan is probably running counterclockwise. If you
      don't feel anything, it's most likely spinning clockwise. Hope this
      helps! -Alexa

      It would probably help if I saw it in a comic book. Did I mention that I'm a moron?

      OMG - @I.P.Knightly - I'm a moron too! I was watching this and the fan looked like it was running clockwise when he said "counter-clockwise" and it looked like it was running counter-clockwise when he said, "clock-wise". I started to wonder if the video camera flipped the image :(. I don't get it. Maybe if I lay under the fan and imagine it was a clock.

    A lot of you are confused because in the very beginning of the video (When the light is turned on), the fan is going clockwise. When he is filming with the light off, immediately after the light is off, he changes the direction to counter-clockwise. Then he messes around back and forth with it.

    I only have ceiling vents. They are used for both heat and air conditioning. I find that the warm air circulates better with the fan blowing down.

    I'm assuming this video is mirrored? You clockwise is anti clockwise and vice versa.
    It made me smile, but your words are helpful - thank you!

    Clockwise is the direction the hands of a clock move. It was hard to tell when looking up, so I just stood under my ceiling fan at high speed.
    When I felt the chill he described I knew my fan was in the counter clockwise position because the air blew straight down on me.

    I thought this was correct since I could feel a breeze one way but not the other. I read something, but of course it didn't say counter-clockwise looking up. I had assumed down, so video clarified it once and for all.
