    Got the 1971 Sierra Brown Varsity at a local Pawn Shop, needed tires and tubes, brake pads, inner cables for drive train and brakes, when I got it 4 years ago, I was not restoring bikes or have the tools to service them, so I took them to my local bike shop to get them tuned up and functional.
    After the initial clean up and servicing, the bike got parked and did not get much attention as I acquired my present collection, and now I was able to circle back and revisit the Varsity for some TLC, glad I did 😏👍🚲🏡 For That 70's Schwinn stuff contact me that70sschwinn@gmail.com

    Hy and greetings from Germany! What a nice bike and you turned it on its best again! The chrome is shiny, that’s the style of that time. I’m born in 1968, so I was three years old when this bike was built! Have a nice day and keep on spinning 🚴😘👍🌞🍀😎

    This was my first road bike I ever owned. I bought it brand new at the only bicycle shop in town. This was in Anchorage Alaska 1971, I was 14 years old. I just loved this bicycle. Mine was green with the same kind of handlebar tape only green. Thanks for bringing back some beautiful memories. You do fine work. I also wanted to mention, that I bought my first varsity for 96 dollars. I thought at the time it was a staggering amount of money.

      Awesome bike story, The Campus Green with the translucent bar tape was a beautiful look 👍I bet you loved that bike as you rolled her out of the Schwinn dealership and you know $96 bucks back then was a lot of money 🤔💰🏷$96 in 1971 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $727.77 today, an increase of $631.77 over 52 years.

    Several years ago, I passed on buying a green Varsity. It had three items…turkey levers, stem shifters, and an Ashtabula crank…that made me turn up my nose at it. After watching your vid, I realize how foolish I was to be such a snob! It was like $50. I’d like another shot at that one. And in 71 I was doing poorly in college. Changed a few things attitude-wise and graduated. Went on to grad school eventually, but that’s another story…

      These mass produced old steel frames bikes were easy to overlook as European and Japanese manufacturers offered lighter frames with better components during the early 70's bike boom. As years passed these old bikes became a nostalgic touch point for many guys that were kids when these bike were new, now they are very collectible based on their colors and year manufactured. Many are being restored to like new condition and will certainly be enjoyed for another 50 years to come.😏🚲🏃‍♂️🏡

    Born in 1960 i saved up my $ from my paper route and in 73/74 bought a brand new campus green varsity for $92.95 at Buena Park Schwinn . Later on it was stolen because I didn’t lock it and my heart sunk. Fast forward a couple of months ago i was on eBay and bought an orange varsity for less than $150 and ive been slowly taking it apart and putting it back together. Still remember how its put together after all these years. Almost done , just cleaned up the paint , and cleaned and regreased the moving parts. Going to look great , almost done

    I found one in a dumpster and stripped it down, removed all paint (what was left on it was minimal) and reassembled with a Bendix yellow-band 2-speed kickback coaster brake rear wheel. With an Ideale leather saddle it was my ride through grad school and beyond, until stolen off the porch. Learned a lot in the process, and still miss that easy-to-ride bike.

He ultimately sold it to me because he bought a Continental. This is the exact bike I bought in 1971 as a 12 year old kid and It was my main mode of transportation until i got my drivers license 4 years later. I particularly wanted the Sierra brown color and loved the Schwinn brand. My previous bike was a Schwinn Typhoon Stingray single speed which was virtually indestructible. When you mentioned the translucent bar tape it suddenly jolted memories of how many times I had replaced the bar tape. Just one thing though. I saw you chose gum wall tires but I am pretty sure the Varsity did not have gum wall tires, the next model up the Continental had gum walls. OK, so challenge accepted... I am now on the search to find a 1971 Sierra brown Schwinn Varsity to start my own Schwinn collection and what better way to start than to get the one that started it.

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great bike stories! I was happy to find the original bar tape as it brought back memories from my childhood too. Great time to start a collection! I started my early 70's collection in 2014 and started with 4 Varsity bikes, then I decided to get every model in the lightweight category, I presently own at least one, starting with the '74 Varsity, '74 Continental, '74 Sprint, '72 Super Sport, '74 Le Tour, '77 Superior, '71 Sports Tourer, 1973 World Voyageur, '77 Volare and '72 Paramount. You are correct, the entry level Varsity was not offered with gum wall tires in 1971 or 1972, however, in the mid 60's they offered the Varsity Tourist that did have the option. In 1973 the catalog featured beautiful images of the Varsity with gum walls. Here is the 1973 Catalog description, pretty cool. Looks like Schwinn decided to dress up the old work horse

      @@that70sschwinn Now that I found Schwinn catalogs online I realize I must have bought a 1970 model as I distinctly remember fantasizing while thumbing through the 1970 Schwinn catalog. This was the catalog Schwinn went to Knott's Berry Farm to do their catalog photo shoot. From that catalog I decided on the Varsity Sport in Sierra Brown. Today I started my Schwinn collection. I picked up a 1971 24" Varsity Sport in Orange. The bike is all original except the rear tire. The paint is at the point to either keep it as is and touch up bare metal spots (I assume "Orange" is somewhat rare as it was only offered in 1971) or do a re-paint. My question is would I do more harm than good (value-wise) if I re-paint the bike a totally different color. If I re-paint it I will definitely go with Sierra Brown. Do you have any thoughts on this? Also today I picked up a Mizutani Super Seraph 10 speed from probably the mid to late 70's. This bike is a Japanese brand and the bike is already in really good condition. Along with the 1980 Raleigh Super Record I am currently riding now gives my collection a bike from America, England and Japan all in the 70's-ish.

      Any local bike shop should be able to service the bike, I would imagine all bearings may need to be overhauled as seen on this video. You can easily wipe the bike down, polish the chrome and make her look as good as new. I took my first Varsity to a local bike shop after I shinned it up, the shop guys and customers got a kick out of seeing the vintage Campus Green beauty roll in, they loved it and did a great job servicing the bike, I think they felt like they were contributing to the preservation of an iconic vintage Schwinn road bike 😏🚲👨‍👨‍👧 Thanks for watching and good luck with your project👍🔧

    Another great video and story.. "Where were you in 71?" I was 14 and a recently diagnosed type one diabetic. Had I known then how well bicycling helps to maintain my glucose control I may have used that bargaining power to persuade my parents to buy me a new Schwinn when I got home from the hospital. LOL... BTW, I just ordered a Park Tool #PCS-4-2 repair stand. I notice you have a bar between the legs on the floor. Is that to keep it from collapsing?

      They came in 3 colors, Opaque Green, Opaque Blue and Kool Lemon, the green being the rarest. They used that color sparingly, I have a 1972 Super Sport in that color.

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the Continental handle bars have more contoured curvatures and can be tricky to slide in or out. You can pry the stem slightly with a flat screw driver to open the fitting and allow better slide through. You can also use a little grease on the curves. Make sure you don't scratch the chrome that will not be covered by the tape. Good luck with your project and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for watching 👍🚲🔧

Last time I looked you could get them on Amazon. They don't look as vintage as gumwall but I was going for performance more than looks, and I've been very happy with them.
