Okay but that album got remastered to sound better and adding layers definitely helped. It’s a rare case where part of the albums sound is its rawness.
Tame Impala recorded Interspeaker on Boss BR 800 and BR 1600 consoles. I have a Boss BR 600, the baby sibling to the BR 800. It can run on AA batteries. Hardly high end gear but they made a great album with it.
I remember when distortion and over-drive was a good thing. Now it control everything, times change. Next video show the songs & artist that made their carrier on abused/overdriven/hacked equipment. Or just fun sound hacks, like putting a mic in a bucket. Thanks.
Several bands recorded in churches with like one microphone. I think Kuranghbin did that as well. Checkbout the microphone brand ear trumpet labs, they have several examples with bands recording with one of their microphones
Contacts in the industry are more important, ohh and a bit of talent. You can spend tens of thousands on gear have no contacts, no ones going to hear you.... You can record a album on a 8 track as long as you know people who can push it and you have talent, you're almost made.
I think the whole point is when music is raw and just about the feel you can use anything and it will sound because it came from the heart
What about Bon Iver. He recorded his first album in a cabin with a 57 and a pirated version of pro tools.
I always forget to include him.

Woah! Wasn't expecting the video to immediately kick off with Ween! My absolute favorite band that deserve all the attention :)

Love being able to sit with this stuff in an industry that is becoming more and more corporate every day

"The Trinity Session" by Cowboy Junkies is a good example of such a recording. I always enjoyed that sound.
Mile Oldfield used a toothbrush on Amarok and it wasn’t an expensive one 😉
