Guess I'm a little late to the game - I'm only just now discovering this channel! But I agree, the Super 8 looks amazing. It reminds me of home videos from the 70's, and it somehow gives a different feel to the same scenes I just watched in you other longer Yellowstone video.

Just bought the camera myself very much. Looking forward to playing with it. Love old 8 mm cameras so much better than digital. It reminds me of shooting on 35.
You can adapt a Double Super 8 camera to use the full width of the film. Not anamorphic, but a lovely wide aspect ratio. There have been anamorphic lenses/adapters made in the past, I believe, but they are not cheap these days. I’ve seen some anamorphic Super 8 tests on TH-cam - have a search, it can be quite impressive. Great footage, by the way - thank you for sharing these beautiful images with us.
@@BrianCWeed You can just do it in post processing. Unless you have a Super 8 camera that takes C mount lenses such as a Beaulieu. It's not worth adding more glass in front of the lens. Although you could with this Elmo, it would be far better on the camera to mark up some frame lines for 16:9 and crop it in post than do it with an anamorphic lens. Beside the point, the Schneider lenses most people use for anamorphic stuff on super 8 have cheap plastic lenses. You would lose less sharpness that way as opposed to adding more glass in front of your lens and cropping in post is non-linear which means that if you don't like it, you can restore the 4:3 aspect ratio of super 8. Double 8 cameras are OK, but there is a severe lack of film available in double 8 and many of the cameras are far older and don't have the quality of lenses. I looked at a double 8 camera before I bought my Elmo, and I realised that there hasn't been readily available double 8 film of any quality since around 2008. Meanwhile Kodak has released all of its current vision stocks, plus Ektachrome, and Tri-X on Super 8. Unfortunately while double 8 may be a superior format, there just isn't the range of film available. The only place that really stocks double 8 is The Film Photography Project and the equivalent 50D over there is completely out of stock. Anyway, the Elmo in this video has a 7.5mm rectilinear lens on the wide end which is quite enough by super 8 standards. Not to mention it has an aperture of F/1.2.
The lens on the Elmo is amazing. I could only suggest a tiny bit of post processing sharpening to make up for the sotness of the the film and maybe next time try recording at 24fps instead of 18fps as the footage is a bit jerky.
It is jerky at 18fps for sure - but I kind of like that classic vintage vacation film look! And 24fps eats through the film so much faster, but does look great
@@BrianCWeed so that doesn't depend on the film? Some other super 8 videos show a slanted exposure area. That is the area narrows into the sprocket hole.
Thank you for including where you got your developing and scans done!
This is beautiful. I shot my first roll of Super 8 last month and I'm in love with the results.
It’s such a unique look! I really enjoy the dream-like quality of it
I have super 8 envy!
Loved this!
It's so great! Really wonderful format

Elmo made some great Super-8 cameras. This camera and 50D make a great combo.
So beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Super 8 is wonderful. Can't wait to shoot on it someday.
It’s so fun to shoot, and I love the quality of the footage. Wish the process was less expensive, but sometimes it’s worth it
Did you have to use the filter key on the front? I have 50d and I don't know if I need to have it engaged
So happy I found this channel, keep it up!
That lens really does render beautifully. How bright would you say the viewfinder is? Are you able to manually focus in a dimly lit indoor space?
Great shots of Yellowstone. Would be fantastic with an anamorphic lens.
Yeah it would! I wonder if there’s ever been a way to do anamorphic super 8

@@cranp4764 Great idea! Thanks for the tip, I'll have to try that

The trick is to shoot at 18fps and get it scanned at 24, That slightly faster motion just works so well for me
How do you get that curve below the sprocket hole?
That is part of the natural frame of the Elmo Super8 camera I was using

This is just a normal overscan for an Elmo 1012S it's the shape of the film plate.
