When I was working for the Civil Service, we used that Wavetek signal generator and I can assure you that it was very short lived because it was a piece of junk.

Eek! I have the same animal. Five PLL goodness. The schematics in the manual are just suggestions. Mine melted it's power transformer once, so I have another hanging off the back, after a failed attempt to convert it to switchers. DON'T! - noise! noise! noise! The bottom plate once shorted with the can pins - bad. The pins come out of the teflon shoulders, too. I can go on, but I still love it. I used one as my LO on an experimental GPS receiver in the early 80's. It's sentimental, yep. 73's W3IHM PS - lemme know If I can help.

I have 3 Wavetek 3001 signal generators. All of them have a problem. One unit has unlocked PLLs, Another unit has a bad power supply and unlocked PLLs. The last unit the PLL will get around to locking, but the output frequency is all over the place and not putting out the selected frequency. I was told they are great when the work, and a bear to service when they don't work. The can with the red button is the RF protection box.

Fun to work on? Fkn nightmare more like. Where do you even start? Make sure you take multiple photos of those coax cables before you remove them. You'll never get them back in the correct place otherwise.

I like old Wavetek gear. Built like a brick shithouse. Just give 'em an oil change every 5,000 miles and they'll run forever. That protoboard has to be added by the owner. Wavetek would have laid out a bd for any mod.

  • @iowahank1

I hope the seller was honest in his listing and you knew what you were getting.

  • @CrazyLabs

Bad news: the instrument doesn't work.... Good news: we'll have a great repair sequence video. 😂

  • @jimomertz

Cool. Non of that synthesized generator rubbish. 😄

A common fault with sig gens is a burnt out output attenuator. People testing transceivers and transmitting!

Yesterday my Wavetek model 3002 came in. You have the wavetek-style knobs (yellow gripsblack middle), mine has silver +black knobs. No problems sofar but it needs calibration.

  • @PapasDino

I have the 3001 (my 3rd backup signal generator!), inherited from one of my Elmers along with the manual thank goodness! They did change over to a IEC AC connector, guess they learned their lesson. Love this old bird! Should be a run repair...73 - Dino KLØS

Have fun finding all the shorted tantalum capacitors! I lost count fixing mine!

  • @davebleamwa2bxy799

I used a lot of wavetek stuff 3 jobs ago. I saw how the 3000's drove the PMEL guys nuts, but I love my 182.

  • @KeritechElectronics

A thing of beauty, a joy for ever! Makes me wish I had one.

  • @reedreamer9518

I would love to have an instrument with that functionality, but that baby is HUGE!

  • @magtazeum4071

I love that you are still creating

  • @robinbrowne5419

    That's old school wizardry 🧙‍♂️

  • @marcseclecticstuff9497

Major pet peeve when jerks use sharp tools to remove cal stickers and damage the front panel. POS wouldn't do that if it was their own car, but if it's somebody else's, who cares, scratch away!

  • @rbrazil1000

I have a non functioning one of these. Future project.

  • @bob_mosavo

    Thanks 👍
