    What an incredible episode. You four continually amaze me. You represent everything I love about Dungeons & Dragons. In fact, you're the reason I fell so deeply back in love with it after 25 years. Keep up the great work. Dungeon Dudes and your Drakkenheim campaign is exceptional. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: this is the best D&D channel on TH-cam.

    Out of all, I think that Pluto Jackson has one of the most subtle but deep character arcs - starting as a quite simple minded monster hunter out for glory to a more wiser soldier tiered of war - trying to find inner peace by pursuing peace around him.
    Here is what I wish for this arc:
    - Pluto starts to crumble due to his inner conflicts
    - His realises that the kings mute is not his own goal but the one of his father
    - In order to find inner peace he pursues peace around him
    - His new goal becomes the edicts of lumen, prevention of war between the divine and the arcane, by balancing the three pillars of power (magic, divince, noble)
    - He becomes a champion of the light (either associated with the falling fire or the sacred flame); Ingame he takes of multiclassing into cleric (peace domain)
    - He forms a westamar paladin order that act as divine protectors of the edicts of lumen
    I am super excited to see how everything is turning out 🙂
    On a side note, I would have loved to see Pluto backfire at Uriel by showing up the parallels between Saint Tarna and him and how this is why the sword and shield belong to him.
    Apart from that what a great episode great acting from all of you.
    May the flame be with you ;-)

    It's interesting to see how the choice of characters for each trio party ended up creating a clear grouping in each - today's episode features "the nobles", and the Sebastian party is all composed of "mageborn". Gave me a wild thought of the parties each pursuing a separate mutually exclusive alliance and ending up fighting each other - that'd be insane, but wild.
    It's also interesting to look at the whole situation Monty is building from my perspective of actually studying and practicing in fields of diplomacy and international relations. What the paladins delivered to the party was definitely a sort of "terms of colonization" ultimatum. Their gifts are readily apparent as being double-edged, indebting Westemar and garrisoning it with forces loyal to them while depriving it of any alternatives and any say of its own. If Wilhelm agrees, Westemar will become the Order's first "colony" of sorts, outside of their co-opted "host" state. If Wilhelm does not agree, they'll have to defeat the paladins. No "good" way out.
    You've definitely made a better situation than many might. It's not just a good king/evil king or good republic/evil empire here (sure, that's fine and dandy for some stories, but it's still dead easy). None of the parties at play are "good" or "bad" in blanket terms, though everyone is sus and has both good and bad aspects, some more than others. The paladin crusaders and the mages are both past the tipping point and both consider the existing order unsuited for their interests, but neither side's total victory is a "golden ending" - the paladins have gone full on Pope and are clearly at the beginnings of a theocratic empire expansion subsuming secular power and going Dragon Age Templars on all magic but their own divine stuff. The mages are callous "dragons" considering most of the population (even many other mages!) expendable and ready to sacrifice the very planet if it means boosting their powers, though they are also probably not lying about the possibility of simply moving to other worlds. The Falling Fire are seeking to full-on martyr the planet itself and everyone on it. There's basically no "good guy", and everyone has geared up to violently reshape the world order to their own liking that would destroy the other factions. Perhaps a "no gods, no masters" sort of "screw you all" ending is the best in here, and perhaps it's the Queen of Thieves that may be gearing up for that - though her own agenda is unknown and she's clearly not a person anyone should trust to have the good of all in mind. Still, perhaps she could at least offer a way forward, and the party could fight it out with her after all is said and done.

    You guys being such good spirits and creativity to the game, and it's a treat getting to watch. I'm excited to see where this episode goes. Have fun at GenCon!
    EDIT: Just finished the episode and my word! The RP from everyone is fantastic. Good on Jill pointing out the "you're pulling out forces, just to plant new forces?" Clause of their offer. And that "Songs of the future" speech from Kelly was fantastic. And the sheer SHADE of Joe's "It was a duel, he lost. It's like playing cards."

    I was so happy when Veo picked up on the threat of the Illyrian offer. To be a nation, dependant on their wealth, stationed with their soldiers, and infiltrated by their clerics who would no doubt act as rabble rousers and spies. It would leave Westemar as little more than a client kingdom to the matriarch. Much as Illyria itself seems to be.

    @Alister222222 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    OK this was amazing. I love the fact that there were basically no persuasion rolls, and it was up to the players to think of what would persuade the other side. I love the fact Monty has been utterly devious; I am not sure if the players recognized that Illyria was sneakily framing their 'demands' as 'offers', while throwing down some dummy 'demands' so the players could feel like they were winning the negotiation. Even if they get talked out of all their demands, their offers are clearly pretty much all poisoned pills. Illyria would like nothing more than to have a puppet king of a deeply indebted Westemar in their pocket, who had been crowned with their authority, with their own advisor at his side, their own clergy in all of Westemar's cities, and a religious knightly order who would probably obey the church when called on. It is almost pure genius, as this way they win the country without having to invade it. It's such a dirty game, I can't see how Wilhelm could ever accept any of it in good faith. Monty did such an amazing job of making it seem like a magnanimous offer!

    Thankfully Veo was getting around to it finally, but I never understood why they never attempted to explain to the Silver Order the facts about the duel with Theodore Marshall.
    1.) Marshall initiated the duel and stipulated it was to the death.
    2.) Marshall basically forced Pluto to follow through with killing him when he lost where as Pluto was leaning towards showing mercy.
    3.) In spite of Marshall's orders, the Silver Order squadron attacked Drakkenforce and would not be reasoned with. Drakkenforce had every right to defend themselves.
    All of the fault for that situation lies at the feet of the Silver Order. Drakkenforce did nothing wrong and has nothing to apologize or atone for in regards to that situation. The Silver Order should in fact issue a formally apology for causing that situation and another for slandering Drakkenforce in the fallout from it. The Silver Order needs to be held to account and atone for it. Period.

      This has single-handedly bothered me more than anything else. I can’t figure out why none of the players have outright said that mater of factly. It’s the truth. Turn the truth sayer sword on and state that then say we’ll be waiting for your apology.

      Monty does a good job playing them as the zealots they are. Religious people are all the same, they all think they're right and can't ever be wrong about anything. All the facts, reason and logic will never work on the, they all always manage to find a way to blame someone else for their mistakes.
      Just like they keep accusing the Academy of messing with things they don't understand. Nevermind that all they did was decide delirium was evil and as far they they're concerned that is understanding it. I keep wishing someone would make the point that by trying to destroy it, all they might do is unleash massive amounts of magic that could wreck untold devastation, or create a cloud of haze that causes delerium to start growing everywhere it blows.

    • @mkzim91
      @mkzim91 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They're really not wrong though, as far as the delerium. Just when it comes to that specific incident with Drakkenforce. If they had any integrity, the Silver Order would admit that was a massive mistake, atone, and move on. But that wouldn't make for as good TV I suppose.

    • @RyanAcidhedzMurphy
      @RyanAcidhedzMurphy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mkzim91 They are wrong because they base their view on pure bias and bigotry. They don't know anything about it, they just think it's evil because it's arcane in nature. They also, very clearly, don't have any idea how dangerous it really is, they just don't want The Academy to be able to use it. Their agenda is to oppress arcane spellcasters, and always has been. The fact that they don't differentiate between raw and focused delerium is an example. They don't care about what is dangerous vs what is safe, they only care about The Academy having access to something that is powerful.
      Religious people are hypocrites, you can be certain that if delerium was divine in nature they'd not want to destroy it. They'd declare it sacred, like the fallen fire, and nothing would dissuade them.
      The Academy, as evidenced with River and Eldric, that like any scientist, when new evidence is presented their views change.
      It was through the Academies actions that the two teams learned everything they did about delerium in the first place. Investigation because they want to understand it. The order just decided it was evil and don't care about evidence.

    "If their bodies are weapons..." Just bring on the monks!
    I'd put a prepared dimensional door or two in the hall for out troops to march in and another/teleport in the back if a retreat is needed. Make guests go through field of antimagic before they enter. And remember to note that precaution just before they enters the field. This will also state that you are the one that is leading the negotiation, a statement of power.
    First question in the negotiations should be if the negotiations will be friendly and no harming of anyone is meant in this negotiation. Also run it through with all the staff too. Ignatius should take care of lying...
    Second round of questions should be if they are meaning to harm any negotiators or someone close to them (remember what Queen of thieves did). Specially point on well being of Wilhelm and Pluto.
    After those the base is set and mood can be lighter (depending on how they replied to those questions...). Bring on food, wine, beer and some dinner show... After that start the real negotiations.

    I love the drama and complexity of the faction intrigue in this campaign, but tbh I've started to get a bit frustrated at how manufactured the conflict with the Silver Order feels. They are constantly complaining about Pluto having killed Theodore Marshal (even though Marshal challenged him to a duel, and Pluto gave him many chances to yield) and complaining about Sebastian having killed more Silver Order warriors (even though, if I recall correctly, he did it in self-defense after they attacked Drakkenforce following that same duel). And it's frustrating that the characters never bring this up. (Monty lampshaded a few episodes ago that Elyrian duels never solve anything, but that's it.) Every time this topic comes up again I end up screaming at my screen.
    It's particularly frustrating because the SO and [some of] the party already have some legitimate disagreements over what the fate of Drakkenheim should be, and the "Pluto did a bad thing" drama distracts from it. It would be one thing if the party called this out and used it against the SO to show their hypocrisy, but they never do; they seem to buy into that story just as much as the SO do.
    I understand that one of the design principles of the campaign is to make no faction look too appealing, so as the party started to get more on board with needing to get rid of delerium then Monty needed to make the SO look more bad so they couldn't just be the obvious "right" choice. I just wish it had been done in some other way rather than having them constantly rehash this sore-loser-about-Pluto's-duel drama.
    All that being said, I love this campaign and I learn so much from it about both playing and DMing; and the fact that I have so many feels about it is testament to what a great story the whole team here has put together. This is just one small aspect of it that bugs me.
