Part of the comments were really directed towards a more cross country focused budget hardtail, would be worth trying an aggressive hardtail with a comparable spec to your full suspension bike and a dropper to see how that feels. Recently went from a full suspension Cannondale to an OnOne Scandal and loving it.

So i’ve had a ragley hardtail with 29” wheels and a 150mm fox 36 for the last couple of years and its been an ace all rounder, my plans are to keep the ragley for longer pedally days and get a long travel 27.5 full sus for bike parks, push up spots and just as an all round rowdier bike, the hardtail is a great place to start and theres very few things im afraid to ride on it, been innerleithen/golfie, bike park wales, wharnecliffe & windhill bike park to name a few and it has came and conquered at all of these spots of course on rough sections you get pinged around but I’m grateful that i’ve taken the time to learn and perfect skills on the hardtail.

Always rode with a backpack, bought a hip pack after recovering from a broken collarbone and wow! I did it because the strap on the backpack was very uncomfortable, and now I know, even though some packs claim good air flow, it's nowhere close to no pack. Plus putting any extra weight on your hips rather than your shoulders is 2 fold, 1, it lowers your center of gravity, might not be much, but I can feel the difference, and 2, you have larger muscle groups carrying this. And they don't really feel the difference. switching from a backpack to a hip pack feels like taking your backpack off, tossing it trail-side and riding on.

Last year I got my first hardtail in about 7 years. My last hardtail had 26" wheels and 100mm fork. Thankfully it did have disc brakes. Then I bought a 130mm front and rear full suspension bike with 27.5" wheels. I did upgrade it. Dropper post, better 4 pot brakes, 180mm rotors, rear shock, wheels and tyres set up tubeless. I did change the front rotor to a 203mm rotor. Last year I got a Oebea Laufey. The 140mm fork and 2.6" tyres did help. As it is my first 29er. I was a little surprised how well it carries speed. As the original brake were less powerful than I'm used to I changed the brakes to the same Shimano SLX M7120 brakes on my full sus. On the Orbea I still use 180mm rotors. I use the RT99 IceTech rotors. I have also change the bars to the OneUp carbon bar. As I wanted the OneUp bar to be the same width as the original 780mm bar. I needed to cut it down. I actually found cutting down carbon bars for the first time quite scary. Even with the correct saw guide and carbon blade. I would like to get a 29er full sus.

I sometime can't decide which bike to ride, so I bring both my hardtail and my FS bikes to the trailhead, and decide when I get there - or I do a lap with each. I do go much faster on the hardtail on most trails. However, my hardtail build is not a low-end, budget bike anymore. I paid $650 for my first hardtail in 1999. I build my new hardtail myself for $4350. The same build is $7000 in my local bike shop.

It was the only one they had and picked it up on sale for €650 so I figured I’d try it. I was worried about it being too big, but it seems to fit me comfortably though! Maybe my arms are a little more stretched than ideal when riding flat, but that’s kind of normal with this kind of bike?

Awesome vid! Here's a dilemma: Assuming my budget is max the price of the cube analog, do I 1)Buy the cube cause its a good ht and it has reliable shimano brakes and sram gears or 2) Do I buy a cheaper (-80€) bike (a gt avalanche) which has slightly more aggresive geometry (67.5° instead of 68.5 of the analog) and wider handlebars, but the brakes and derailleur are a bit worse (it has tektro and mikroshift bits which I am unfamiliar with)? I intend to upgrade some bits in the future anyway, and I would like to have a more aggresive bike for the descents!
So basically frame vs components is my point.
Also, is it possible to fit like a 120mm fork on the cube?
Sry for the long comment, keep up the good work!!!!

    • @antitainer3761
      @antitainer3761 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You can change components, you can't change the frame. Ideally you get a frame with the parts you want, because a big company can get them cheaper than you upgrading afterwards.
But if you have to compromise, don't compromise on the frame (and fork). Derailleurs, shifters and the brakes usually get overcredited.
Riding skills, Frame/Fork and Wheels are at least 95% of the equation in my book.
In your special case I would argue that 1 degree difference is not much and neither is a very aggressive geometry.
Everything below 66 degree is where progressive geometries start.
Regarding the 120mm: Can't say for sure, but usually this screws up the geometry and usually this makes things worse and not better.
      Just my 2 cents

Took me quite a while to get it just right as the frame was size 17 and I'm 19 (1.83m, 6'00 I think?) and I didn't really know what I liked to ride/felt comfortable
But once I got it, I honestly think I reached my limits on what upgrading a bike will do. It looks kinda stupid, REALLY HIGH, but damn I love passing guys who spent 4x more than me and then see me, with curved bars, 26" wheels, all around goofy mfer just passing through.

    Hi Matt,
I'm considering getting this CUBE Analog but I'm not sure about the size.
I'm 6.2 feet height and I prefer the geometry from L (large size) instead of XL.
Do you think L size will affect that much and the bike will feel small?
What is your height? Cause you used the XL version.
Your response on this is much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Hey Denis - I’m 6ft 5. I think you’ll be fine if you want to go with the large, especially given your height. Let me know how you get on 👍🏻 Matt

I think it is a completely stupid review, when comparing it with a full suspension bike. Later in the video even mentioning a E-MTB, I mean dude. I don't want to sound rude, but it's totally dumb. This Cube is the exact model I have and it isn't made for the tracks you ride. It is made for gravel and cross country, mixed with road, and with here and there a challenge. It definitely doesn't need a dropper post, you should get it a suspension post. Wider bar is a good step forward for control indeed. And I noticed the build up on this bike is totally wrong it has the low level SRAM buildup, it should have the Deore or XT buildup with 2 rings up front and 11 or 10 in the back.
And it has a lockout, I mean why add a lockout on a track bike? I mean you get a lockout on it to use it on hard roads and long distance variating rides. I also took different handles, Lizardskin. And well I made it into a cross country, long distance MTB, for traveling, so a bike packing bike, and for that purpose it is absolutely great. And sure I have a double suspension as well using it on tracks like you ride here, but everything else I take these Cubes. The Cube Aim Ex I have, and the Cube Acid. The Acid version I have the same buildup as this bike you have, but I use that in the city and gravel stuff is all, for shorter distances. So I guess you seriously need to reconsider doing a better review on this Aim Ex one. Last not least, maybe get a bike fit session for it.
