Something about Metallica...their songs are super layered, like how an orchestra is. Rhythm guitar isn't just one play through. They play it, then play it again with the recording, and sometimes even again, just so it has that "full" sound. Seen them three times since 1989. Fsking awesome

The song was inspired by the writing of Ernest Hemingway about war... the expression 'For whom the bell tolls...' was by 16th century English poet John Donne: "For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee" 🎸🔔
The opening riff was actually played by (late) bassist Cliff Burton - he used a distortion pedal to make the bass sound like a lead guitar... it was what made him a phenomenal bassist and musician (He was only 24 when he passed away in 1986 in a tour bus accident)... Metallica would feature him on a bass solo in their concerts, where he would RIP 🔥on stage (His bass solo was filmed a few times... featured as the track 'Pulling teeth' on the first album "Kill 'em all")

My personal opinion is if you are enjoying Metallica and want to check out something that you wouldn't think would work in a million years then seek out any video from their original "S&M" concert. Metallica + San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. I first watched it with mouth wide open (I enjoy metal and am a classically trained brass musician). Michael Kamen did an excellent job of creating orchestral arrangements that stood up against the 4 guys from Metallica killing it at the front of the stage and the orchestra were working just as hard.
For years Metallica have come on stage to Ennio Morricone's "Ecstacy of Gold" and to have a live orchestra doing the same was a nice touch. Then straight into the near-10 minute instrumental "Call of Ktulu" followed by "Master of Puppets" without a single break. Epic. They did this track, "Enter Sandman", "One" (which I thought was born to be orchestrated after hearing this version), "Wherever I May Roam", "Nothing Else Matters", the list goes on... There was a point at the turn of the 2000s where I had the 2 audio CDs on constant repeat in my car.

well when you really look at and think about it "For Whom The Bell Tolls" and "One" go hand in hand with each other and are the two sides of a Coin.

Most of us who study music or play an instruments are always astounded by the things Metallica does. There's a little bit of dissonance thrown into the song during the instrumental break they play after the first chorus. They do this twice when they play a chord that's not part of they key that they are playing in. Please do a reaction video for "Master of Puppets" if you haven't done one yet. Keep on rockin' in the free world, my friends.

Another great video. Another great song. If you want to really experience Metallica, I recommend the S&M album.

acdc does use this as an intro to hells bells....its a massive bell that is suspended over the crowd. Obviously, it doesn't ring but is triggered by the soundman on tape

For whom the bell towels came about during the black plauge. So many were dying that they were buried alive. A string was placed inside the coffin to say I'm not dead yet.

Just found your channel today and gave an instant sub! Great reaction to a great song. Metallica has been number 1 for me for almost 30 years. If you're looking to stick with this album, Fade to Black is an absolute must. The song Battery from the puppets album is a personal fav of mine too. Now to go binge watch some of your videos haha 🤘

Weird how this song has no solo. The song actually peaks during the intro. Maybe the best intro to any metal song.

It looks like the only member of "the big 4" you haven't listened to yet is Anthrax. Most of their music would be classified as speed metal. It has a little bit of a punk feel to it. I think the song "Be All, End All" would be a good first listen for you two. Love the reactions!
