Superb demo! This was exactly what I needed to see for my project. Thanks very much for taking the time to create this tutorial!

Thanks for the video. Is it possible to mirror an object based on that objects pivot point? I tried all the mirror options (world, object and bounding box) but all of them move my pivot point to a different location on my object. I am coming from 3ds Max where the mirror automatically works based on the object designated pivot point. Any ideas?

Are you specifically asking about the Mesh > Mirror command? This is a different tool than what was shown in the video. However, the Mirror command in Maya is not like the mirror tool in 3ds Max. While the Mirror command in Maya will mirror the selected geometry, it is based on the location of the object across an axis of the mirrored geometry. The locator that is displayed when using this command is the "Plane" that represents the middle of the two mirrored pieces (or objects). This locator will move the duplicated geometry and it can also rotate the duplicated geometry to a new position. Choosing "World" in the Mirror Axis Position option places the locator based on world space coordinates, so it will duplicate across the grid axes. Choosing "Object" on the Mirror Axis Position options uses the object's pivot point set before the Mirror command is run. The mirror command also merges the vertices automatically (if it can). So it sounds like you are wanting to have some geometry mirrored based on the object's pivot point. So if you want to use this command (instead of the method in the video) you can set the pivot point before running the Mirror command to line it up on the axis of your object to mirror and choose Object in Mirror Axis Position options. Or move your object across an axis (and choose World in Mirror Axis Position options), then choose that axis in the PolyMirror options, then when mirrored it will be on the other side of that axis. I hope this helps.

this helped a lot.. but still., when i modelled a ball and while extruding the centre of the ball (open side of the half sphere) in symmetry to the inside there is portion left between the two half spheres..

I'm glad it helped. I'd like to help, but based on the description alone there could be a lot that could be happening. This is not something I can fully diagnose since I cannot see what you're doing, but there are a few things you can check just to make sure it's setup properly. First, make sure that the ball is center of the grid before extruding. Snap it to the center if you can, and not rotated at all. You could be having some difficulties if the vertices of the ball are not at the same distance from the center. Also, you can increase the tolerance of the symmetry settings (in the tool settings) so it will select vertices that are not exactly mirrored.
