Aphyosemion / Chromaphyosemion (bivittatum group)
Chromaphyosemion are small fish from West Africa that feature two longitudinal bands which are invisible or recognizable depending on the fish`s mood.
--Chromaphyosemion sind kleine Fische aus Westafrika. Sie haben zwei längsgestreifte Bänder, die je nach Stimmung der Tiere sichtbar werden. (Stimmungsbänder)

bitaeniatum bivittatum poliaki riggenbachi loennbergii volcanum splendopleure koungueense omega lugens melinoeides alpha kouamense punctulatum melanogaster malumbresi ecucuense erythron
In 1895 Lönnberg called the attention to this characteristic by denominating the then first described species of these longitudinally striped fish " bivittatus "
In the past these longitudinally striped fish were composed in the bivittatum-group.
In 1971 Dr Alfred Radda separated the bivittatum-group from the subgenus Fundulopanchax ( MYERS 1924 ) and attached it to the newly created subgenus Chromaphyosemion within the genus Aphyosemion
Due to studies conducted by Rainer Sonnenberg in 2000, the subgenus Chromaphyosemion was elevated to full genus rank
and acknowledged as such by the DKG.
Internationally, the genus Chromaphyosemion has not been recognized, but is still considered as being a subgenus of Aphyosemion. Chromaphyosemion can clearly be distinguished from other Aphyosemion species by their mood - depending longitudinal bands.Nevertheless, DNA analyses have proven
that they are all rooted with one another. Hence, a segregation can only be based on the results of a new revision of all Aphyosemion species.
Chromaphyosemion are little marvels of colour. According to the fish`s mood, their longitudinal bands disappear. Their body colour changes, the coloration in the fins intensifies, accentuating hitherto only slightly perceptible dots.
In females, too, the longitudinal bands may melt away
and the fish sport their colours. Corresponding to their respective mood, barely perceivable markings in their finnage appear
more pronounced or may fade.
Chromaphyosemion splendopleure - group
In the past, all sediment soil-dwelling Chromaphyosemion, inhabiting the coastal area of West Cameroon south of the distribution area of bivittatum (below the town of Funge) up to northern Gabon, were referred to as Chromaphyosemion splendopleure.
This species varies considerably in colour morphs (coloration pattern, appearance). Therefore some authors split it up into phenotypes and " species ", some of which have been described as distinct species.
After the latest DNA-analyses, conveyed by Agnèse, the splendopleure-group has been redefined.
An essentiel role is, once again, attributed to volcanum.
The bulk of the former splendopleure species, the phenotypes
Tiko and Meme, has been assigned to the species volcanum.
The phenotypes Bimbia, Bioko and a number of populations
between Kribi and Campo are said to belong to splendopleure Tiko.
