  • I picked up one of these developing reels recently, as I've always wanted to try and develop sheet film in my Paterson tank. The FPP reel is 3D printed, and not too expensive... but is it any good? I process 6 sheets of film to find out...

It's always interesting to see a new way of developing 4x5. So far I'm very happy with the Jobo 2509N 🙂

I use the Mod 54 reels in a Paterson tank. No need for O-rings, since the spindle fits the reel firmly with the same "grip" as the Patterson 35-120 reels. It takes a bit to learn the loading--you need to "feel" the sheets into the six notches, and since there are three sheets to a side, each "inside" the next,, it would be tough-to-imposible to vary development sheet by sheet unless you were careful to load the minus sheets in the outside slots. Even then, you would have to be in the dark to sneak one out, which sort of defeats the purpose of a daylight tank. These systems are great for those of us who load in the dark and prefer to develop in daylight. I get consistent development with no scratches, but, of course, the sheets all receive the same development.

I'll most likely lose the O-rings at some point 😄

I have both this one and the MOD45 , personally I prefer MOD45 to this one by far... this scratches the back of your film or if you load it (by mistake) emulsion out, it gives you a big undeveloped bar in the middle of your sheet, it is very fragile and flimsy as well, i managed to break one of the wings out of 6 ... the MOD45 was a much better experience , very sturdy and more reliable...

Another vote for Mod 54. And I don't have much luck with the B's on the 5x7...

I'm hearing a lot of good things about the Mod 54. I'll order one after my return from Japan. Thanks!

Yeah, that was always my concern with those reels. I think I will stick with my Stearman Press 4x5. I'm sure you will get it worked out. Thanks for the video

I have to admit, I was pretty disappointed. I'll try and sort it out, then test it with cut up xray film. If it persists, to the scrap heap it will go!

I'm surprised you could develop all six negatives fully with 1:100 dilution. How much Pyro HD is required for one 4x5 film?

I used 1+1+50 dilution. 20ml of both part A and part B in 1000ml water.
