When filimg the video Kate had learned that Donald Sutherland was in London filming and decided that he would be ideal for the role of Wilhelm Reich. So she discovered where he was staying and knocked on his door. Donald Sutherland said that he opened the door and thought no one was there because Kate was so short. They spoke about the video and he was very intrigued about it and agreed to film it. However due to the short notice they could not get a work permit so he agreed to do it for free!
Kate and the video director could not agree on the final cut so they got friend and film director Terry Gilliam to edit the final version.
The hair is a wig because Kate is playing the part of a small boy. The story of the video is based on the Book Of Dreams by Peter Reich, which reflects on the relationship he had with his psychoanalyst inventor father, Wilhelm Reich, who among other things invented Cloudbusting machines that were supposed to draw energy from clouds. Wilhelm was arrested by the authorities and died in prison. Kate is playing the part of a very young Peter. The Canadian actor Donald Sutherland is playing the part of Wilhelm.
Ive read somewhere that Reichs Cloudbusters really worked, I dont know if thats true at all...but its a cool thought

Little tip for you Baz. With Kate, you maybe need to research the song before you watch the video. Go to Song Facts or whatever . It will make watching her vid so much more understandable! For gods sake don’t watch Delius without doing that. It will make no sense at all. 😂
Would really like to see you react to the music video for The Sensual World (released in September 1989). See her as an astonishingly beautiful woman at the age of 31 singing and dancing to one of the most sexually sensual songs ever.
Really enjoying your take on Kate's songs. I think you might well really like 'Rocket's tail' where she has a full 1 1/2 minutes with no instruments at all before the wildness starts (to glorious effect). You will certainly like 'Delius' just for the sheer joy of her singing on it, and I think you will really like 'Heads we're dancing' where she writes about dancing with Hitler, oh and 'James and the Cold Gun', and 'Pi' and 'Moments of Pleasure' and her version of 'Rocket Man' and her hauntingly beautiful version of 'My Lagan Love,' and 'Hounds of love' (the track) as well as 'The Ninth Wave' and 'Blow Away (for Bill), and 'All we Ever Look For,' and 'Big Stripey Lie' and.......
Steampunk is the perfect word for the cloudbusting machine. It's not my favourite of Kate's songs, (it was the follow-up single to Running Up That Hill, you're correct) but it has grown on me over the past 37 years. I don't think you recognised Donald Sutherland, you may know him better as Kiefer Sutherland's dad.
The string/synth sounds are from a Fairlight CMI, an early digital instrument that was ridiculously expensive back then. Peter Gabriel had one as well.
Kate was the first artist to use the Fairlight to produce an entire album.
Keep listening to Cloudbusting, it's a real slow burner that gets you in the end.

When she wrote this, she was at her grand piano in her home. The lyrics were originally going to be "I just know that something bad is going to happen" when a huge wasp flew in her window and was flying around her. After a few minutes the wasp flew back out the window. and she changed the lyrics to say "I just know that something good is going to happen."
The synth-like and strings are from the Fairlight CMI that was extensively used by Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel around this time. On a lot of this album, Hounds of Love, she did not use her normal song composition approach, and basically crafted the songs in the studio by experimentally adding layers to a base.
You got it right, she's the rainmaker's son. The son's coming out--to finish her father's work. This is based on Peter Reich's "Book of Dreams" that Kate was captivated by, and the train sounds at the end proved your musical theory correct. So good job.
The son is "coming out" in different manners, Peter was known for his affinity.

@@jons.105 She was - look at the lyrics. The whole video is based on Peter's own autobiography "A Book Of Dreams", which is also seen in this video (in Donald's pocket).

The nineth wave in its entirety would be cool. One reason just for your enjoyment and secondly, just to see how you react to something totally exciting and experimental
On the same album as "Running Up That Hill". Kate is playing the part of Peter Reich whose father, psychoanalyst Wilhelm, was arrested in the 1950s for ideas considered threatening by the government . He died a year later in prison. This song is about young Peter's relationship with his father and was inspired by his "Book Of Dreams" Kate was fascinated by the title and borrowed or purchased it (I can't remember) many years earlier. Not my favourite either. Side one was mostly the singles. Side Two is the 7 song, prog concept piece titled "The Ninth Wave". I tend to listen to side two more nowadays. It contains "Hello Earth" which I consider to be the best song on the album. Absolutely regal.
Her Celtic roots often come thru her compositions as does her esoteric mysticism. The jig of life..She speaks of Egypt, of Australia, of ghosts and Houdini, war and birds, she speaks language of underground of punk of femininity and woman. Listen to alot of her work..its worth it..as a lifelong fan, I love everything she does, I do prefer some more than others, each is perfect.
"The Dreaming" by kate opens up realms most are not equipped for going in and come thru it with a myriad of experience.
It was the same album ("Hounds Of Love" 1985), RUTH was the first and "Cloudbusting" was the second single (followed by "Hounds Of Love" and "The Big Sky").

Love this video but still have trouble processing Kate Bush as a 12 year old boy. Doesn't really work for me.
